  Guide Review - Weber Genesis E-320 - Discontinued

  For 2011 Weber has redesigned their popular line of Genesis grills. The burners, which used to run parallel to the front of the grill, with controls on the right side table, are now run perpendicular to the front of the grill with the controls in the front. Now, after 25 years, the Weber Genesis grill is much more like all the other grills on the market, at least as far as the burner design goes.

  Being Weber, this wasn't a rash decision and after three years of development, the new Genesis grill is a more efficient grill. I won't go into all the details here, but what I can say is that this grill really hasn't changed the way the grill cooks.

  Of course, if you are reading this you are not interested in what the Genesis used to be, but what it is now. Put simply this grill is one of the most efficient standard gas grills on the market as well as one of the best built. For the price there really isn't a better grill on the market, and while this is a basic, no frills gas grill it does what you want, it grills hot and fast, while giving you the ability to do low, indirect grilling.

  To really understand the Genesis grill you need to look inside the firebox. The three burners put out only 38,000 BTUs under 507 square inches of cooking space or about 75 BTUs per square inch. While this is low when compared to other gas grills, the efficient design holds in heat. The problem is, while this grill can hold in heat, without the extra power it takes lover to heat up. So, you will be able to do some serious grilling it will take you longer to get there. Plan on some extra preheat times.

  What really makes the Weber Genesis E-320 stand out is its quality. The attention to detail that takes 3 years to change the burner design can be seen in every part of this grill. This means that everything on this grill works (they actually fire up every grill before it is packaged), and since there is a 10 year warranty on virtually everything in this grill you can rely on it to last for at least a decade and I would believe longer.

  This model includes a 12,000 BTU side burner under a flush mounted cover on the right side table.

  Guide Review - Weber Genesis E-320 Gas Grill

  Weber builds grills that are among the most recommended in the world.

  Their wide availability makes them very popular as does their consistently high quality of manufacturing. This Weber grill is an attractive unit of stainless steel and painted black (or green or blue or copper). The lid is a single layer heavy enameled steel piece, the body is black, dark blue, or green steel with a cast aluminum firebox.

  The frame is welded steel. Welded steel is much better than the riveted or bolt frames on many lower quality grills.

  Apart from the looks, the Weber burner system provides good heat distribution that eliminates hot and cold spots. The three burner configuration gives you the ability to grill indirectly or to have a hot sear zone while having a cooler grilling area. Control on this grill is very good because of its highly adjustable valves.

  The Genesis E-320 offers 42,000 BTUs from its three burners under a primary cooking area of 507 square inches. While this is a little low for a grill of this size the efficient design generates more heat with less fuel than many other grills. This unit should reach maximum temperature in less than 10 minutes and can easily sear. This unit also comes with a 12,000 BTU side burner.

  Weber-Stephen is one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of BBQ equipment and related accessories in the world. Weber grills and smokers cook beautifully and have great features that are clever, effective and easy to use. As popularity and demand for BBQ gear grows worldwide, Weber continues to earn their long standing reputation for quality, durability and outstanding customer service and support, (7 days a week from 7am to 9pm CST), in an increasingly competitive environment. Even in this crowded marketplace, many consumers are still willing to pay more for the Weber name and they are rarely disappointed. They make a variety of cookers and smokers. Their iconic black charcoal kettles are known throughout the world. Indeed Weber is expanding globally.

  Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit]* are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

  Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.

  The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.

  Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.

  *At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.

  Weber Gas Grills

  Weber gas grills are simply the gold standard. Designed intelligently with attention to details and built to last, they look good, work beautifully, and almost never break down. If they do, Weber is known for great customer service and for carrying an inventory of parts on models from years gone by. Meathead owned a Genesis for 15-years and can testify from experience.

  All their burners are quality stainless steel, have a long life expectancy, and they come with electronic ignitions. The body is heavy. The casters are sturdy and lock solid. Nothing wobbles on Webers. The grease drip pans are easy to access from the front, not the back as with many other grills. Except for the portable/compact Q line, all models hold the propane tank inside the enclosed cart, and can be adapted for natural gas. They have smaller vents in the hood than most gassers which means they retain more heat than grills with more BTUs.

  All have inverted V shaped "flavorizer" bars that cover and protect the burners while vaporizing drips and turning them into flavor that gets back up onto the meat. Except for the Q line, all either come with a rotisserie or you can order one as a factory accessory.

  Weber gas grills come in four basic flavors, Q, Spirit, Genesis II, and Summit, each with several configurations. Models starting with an "E" are built with Weber's sturdy porcelainized enamel coated steel, and those starting with an "S" are mostly stainless steel.

  

  Addressing an increased interest in outdoor kitchens, in 2011 Weber introduced add on "Island Cabinetry" and "Social Centers", pictured above, to integrate with the Summit lines. These range from matching side tables with enclosed storage to cart mounted side burners, enclosed trash cans and large "Social Areas" that serve as a bar with double door storage underneath. There is also a faux stone island with matching countertops.

  Much has been made of 430 and 304 stainless steel: the two most popular grades used by grill manufacturers. Many other inexpensive brands use very thin, low cost 430 stainless to get that shiny showroom floor look. Premium grill makers tout their use of higher quality, higher priced 304 stainless. At some point, Weber decided to switch from 304 to 430. Although 304 is superior, 430 can work just fine if it is a thick gauge like Weber uses, but it is not as durable and one has to expect the life of the grill will be shortened. Will this decision could come back to haunt the castle in Palatine? Only time will tell. Alas, it does not appear Weber's prices were reduced to reflect the cost savings realized with this change.

  Weber Spirit Gas Grills

  Spirit is Weber's entry level and their least expensive line of gas grills. Made in China, they are the subject of criticism from Weber devotees who have always prized their high quality and American made status. In 2012, however, Weber settled a class action lawsuit that objected to Weber's use of the Made in America label on any of their grills. With the exception of Spirit, Weber maintains that all their products are assembled in America and most components are made in America with some being outsourced globally. As part of the settlement, Weber no longer uses the term "Made in America" for their products.

  Regardless, their long standing reputation for quality and customer care remains intact and many people are still willing to pay more for the Weber name. Spirit was completely redesigned in 2013 to bring it closer in in appearance and performance to Weber's mid-line Genesis series.

  Spirit comes in three basic flavors: E, S and SP. E series has black porcelain enameled housing, cast iron grates, flavorizer bars and a 430 grade stainless steel work surface. Single door painted metal carts with casters. S includes all E features except the hood and door are stainless steel. SP is the same as S but upgrades the grates to 7 mm stainless rods and adds a side-mounted condiment rack. All models have battery powered ignition.

  Weber's entry level Spirit line was completely redesigned for 2013. Spirit E-320 has three stainless steel burners and a 12,000 BTU side burner. It is the largest Spirit model with 424 square inches primary cooking surface and a 105 square inch warming rack.

  A big change for Spirit in 2013 was reconfiguration of the burner layout. Burners used to connect from left to right with control knobs on the right side shelf. The new Spirit burners connect from front to back with control knobs on the front panel. This not only frees up work space on the side shelf, but provides better performance when cooking indirect or 2-zone. Indeed Weber Genesis, Summit and most other manufacturer's gas grills follow this burner design. Also included is Weber's in cart LP tank fuel gauge that gives an approximate indication of fuel level by weight.

  The E-320 has black porcelain enameled grates, flavorizer bars, housing and single door enclosed carts with a stainless steel work surface. The lightish hood is made of porcelain-enameled steel. The stainless work surface has cast aluminum end capes with built-in tool hooks. It rests on four casters (two locking) and has battery powered ignition.

  Spirit was always a very basic, well made, serviceable grill line. The 2013 redesign offers significant upgrades and considerable value. Owners of previous Spirit grills may rub their eyes in disbelief as they behold these new cookers that barely resemble past models. Although Spirit is Weber's entry level price point, it is still more expensive than many other popular grill brands. However, most Spirit owners feel the quality, durability and performance are worth the price.

  Some people who are aware of the Weber Genesis series of grills may wonder what the main difference is between the GENESIS E 310 and the GENESIS E 320 might be. The difference is that the Genesis E 320 has the side burner, while the Genesis E 310 does not.

  The “pros” of the Weber Genesis E320 have been detailed, so perhaps we should list the “cons”. Actually, there are very few. And those are purely a matter of opinion.

  “CONS” OF THE WEBER GENESIS E320

  • Indeed there are less costly grills on the market, so price could be considered an issue. BUT, FOR THE COST, YOU WONT FIND A BETTER GRILL ON THE MARKET TODAY. So, consider your priorities and you will probably find that cost is not a “con” at all.
  • Somewhat limited cooking space. There are grills with more space, but they do not have the other positive features of this unit. Again, consider your priorities overall and cooking space may not be an issue either.
  • Size and weight make it not as portable as other grills, but it is movable.
  • Not much side room for plates. That is easily taken care of by placing a table nearby.

  You can also add to the stylish appearance and convenient use of this grill by taking advantage of the accessories available for the unit.

  • A cover made especially for this grill. This is really nice.
  • A special rotisserie. Imagining the aroma of the meat cooking makes my mouth water right now.
  • Cast iron griddle. Very handy, indeed.
  • Vegetable basket. Great addition for perfectly cooked veggies!

  The Weber Spirit E320 is the successor to the extremely popular Weber Spirit E310. The only major difference between the two is the addition of a 12,000 BTU side burner to the E320.

  Let’s take a closer look at this gas grill to see how it performs, and whether it should feature high on your gas grill shopping list.

  Weber Spirit E320 Features

  Before we look at performance, here is a quick summary of the features:

  Who Is It For?

  If the Spirit E210/220 is too small for you, or the Weber Genesis range is out of your budget, then the Spirit E320 is the perfect middle ground. You get Weber quality in the $500 range, with 3 burners and enough cooking space to comfortably accommodate a large family.

  The assembly instructions use clear pictures to show you how everything fits together. It is not a difficult or complicated assembly, but will take a while because of the number of parts that need fitting. Two people is recommended, although you should be able to get it done solo as well. Expect to spend anything from 90 minutes to 2 hours on the assembly.

  Construction Quality

  Some people who are used to cheaper brands of grills have described the Spirit as a “tank” when they first saw the parts and the fully assembled product.

  While not quite as impressive in quality as the more expensive Genesis, the Weber Spirit E320 is a heavy and very solidly built grill, with plenty of stainless steel and nice, heavy porcelain-enamel coated cast iron grates that you can’t wait to throw some meat on.

  Heating Up

  It is easy to get the Spirit 320 fired up with the electronic igniter. The grill heats up quickly and you can expect it to reach 500+ degrees in around 10 minutes.

  One reviewer we came across mentioned he got the grill to maintain 325 degrees with just one of the three burners at full blast. That’s impressive, and it speaks volumes for Weber’s design and materials. There are no holes or gaps where heat can escape, and the solid metal no doubt helps to retain more heat.

  

  Lots of heat is great, but you want it spread evenly around so you can cook on the whole grill if needs be. You can certainly do that with the E320.

  You can fit roughly 21 hamburger patties on the E320’s cooking area, to give you a real world idea if square inches mean little to you. At two each that’s hamburgers for 10 people in one go, plus you can fry some onions on the side burner while you’re at it. The even heat distribution means you can really load the grates and get all food pieces done about evenly with hardly any moving around.

  The flavorizer bars do a great job of generating some flavorful smoke to add more taste to the food.

  It’s hard to fault this grill. It is a little on the expensive side. Also, hooking up your LP gas tank inside the compartment can be tricky as the space is limited. The assembly also takes some time, even though it’s not difficult. Overall, no deal breakers.

  The Weber Spirit E320 is a very good piece of equipment. Even though it does not feature the same quality stainless steel throughout that you’ll find on the Genesis range, this grill will still last considerably longer than cheaper brands. Cooking on both high and low heat is impressive and heat distribution is excellent.

  If a Genesis grill is just beyond your budget, the Spirit E320 is a very worthy option that won’t disappoint. It is also lighter and takes up less space than the Genesis.

  Weber Genesis EP-330 Gas Grill

  Weber-Stephen is one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of BBQ equipment and related accessories in the world. Weber grills and smokers cook beautifully and have great features that are clever, effective and easy to use. As popularity and demand for BBQ gear grows worldwide, Weber continues to earn their long standing reputation for quality, durability and outstanding customer service and support, (7 days a week from 7am to 9pm CST), in an increasingly competitive environment. Even in this crowded marketplace, many consumers are still willing to pay more for the Weber name and they are rarely disappointed. They make a variety of cookers and smokers. Their iconic black charcoal kettles are known throughout the world. Indeed Weber is expanding globally.

  Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit]* are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

  Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.

  The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.

  Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.

  *At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.

  Weber Gas Grills

  Weber gas grills are simply the gold standard. Designed intelligently with attention to details and built to last, they look good, work beautifully, and almost never break down. If they do, Weber is known for great customer service and for carrying an inventory of parts on models from years gone by. Meathead owned a Genesis for 15-years and can testify from experience.

  All their burners are quality stainless steel, have a long life expectancy, and they come with electronic ignitions. The body is heavy. The casters are sturdy and lock solid. Nothing wobbles on Webers. The grease drip pans are easy to access from the front, not the back as with many other grills. Except for the portable/compact Q line, all models hold the propane tank inside the enclosed cart, and can be adapted for natural gas. They have smaller vents in the hood than most gassers which means they retain more heat than grills with more BTUs.

  All have inverted V shaped "flavorizer" bars that cover and protect the burners while vaporizing drips and turning them into flavor that gets back up onto the meat. Except for the Q line, all either come with a rotisserie or you can order one as a factory accessory.

  Weber gas grills come in four basic flavors, Q, Spirit, Genesis II, and Summit, each with several configurations. Models starting with an "E" are built with Weber's sturdy porcelainized enamel coated steel, and those starting with an "S" are mostly stainless steel.

  

  Addressing an increased interest in outdoor kitchens, in 2011 Weber introduced add on "Island Cabinetry" and "Social Centers", pictured above, to integrate with the Summit lines. These range from matching side tables with enclosed storage to cart mounted side burners, enclosed trash cans and large "Social Areas" that serve as a bar with double door storage underneath. There is also a faux stone island with matching countertops.

  Weber Genesis Gas Grills

  Weber's mid line Genesis series is one of the most popular gas grills in the USA. Everybody and their brother seems to own one. The line was totally redesigned as Genesis II with a soft launch at the end of 2016 and a full blown blitzkrieg for Spring 2017.   Many expressed concern that Genesis production has moved from the USA to China. The warranty has changed, but it's a mixed bag. Housings dropped from 25 years to 10 years, however the grates and flavorizer bars went up from 5 years for stainless steel to 10 years, and 3/2 years for porcelain coated enameled grates and bars respectively to 5 years for both. The new Infinity Ignition "Ensured to ignite every time with improved durability and enhanced 10 year warranty", is up from 2 years. Electronic components have been a major source of pain for grill manufacturers and consumers alike. High priced luxury producers have been able to use state of the art durable parts, while mass market brands had to use lower quality, less reliable parts to keep prices in line for shoppers in big box stores. That seems to be changing with component pricing going down and performance heading north, 2017 could be a pivotal year for technology in the outdoor cooking arena.

  Instead of only 3-burners, Genesis II is offered in 2, 3, 4 and 6 burner configurations. There are two distinct lines: Genesis II and Genesis II LX. As the name indicates, LX offers significant upgrades at an additional cost.

  This model was discontinued in 2016 and replaced by the Genesis II and II LX lines.

  Genesis is one of the most popular grills in the USA, appearing in backyards coast to coast. Like all Genesis models, the EP-330 has three stainless steel burners that line up from left to right with control knobs on the front panel. This burner configuration is relatively new. Prior to 2011 Genesis burners lined up from front to back with control knobs on the right side shelf. The current design is better for 2-zone indirect cooking and frees up the side shelf for workspace. The EP-330 also includes a 10,000 BTU sear burner located between the left and middle main burners. Use of the sear burner with all three main burners boosts the EP-330 Heat Flux number (BTU/Primary Cooking Surface) from 74.95 to 94.67. A 12,000 BTU side burner is added to the right side shelf as well.

  Offered in LP and NG models, the EP-330 is very similar to the slightly less expensive E-330. It has a double wall porcelain enameled hood and double cart doors in your choice of black, copper or green, just like the E models, but also offers the additional color choices of Crimson and Smoke. These colors are available for LP grills. Natural gas grills are black only. Additionally, E models come with porcelain coated cast iron grates and porcelain coated flavorizer bars, whereas EP models feature 7mm stainless steel rod grates and stainless flavor bars. Carts are painted metal with a stainless steel control panel and side shelves and four casters. The hood and shelves have cast aluminum end caps with tool hooks on the shelves and battery powered ignition.

  LP models come with a "Precision Fuel Gauge" located inside the cart next to the LP tank. Hang the tank on the fuel gauge scale, it measures the weight in 20% increments and shows your approximate fuel level. An EP-310 model is offered that is the same as the EP-330, but without a sear burner and side-burner.

  It is readily available online, but not at big box stores. Here's why: Weber used to give exclusivity on certain high end grills to independent dealers with the idea that consumers wanting entry level cookers could pick them up at Lowe's and Home Depot, while those looking for premium grills would be better served by independents who also carried luxury brands. Small, independent hearth and patio store owners liked this arrangement because it gave them a competitive advantage over the big guys. But Weber relaxed this policy, much to the chagrin of the indies, and now all Weber grills are available at the big chains EXCEPT for Genesis EP-310 and EP-330: a remnant of days when independent Weber dealers could easily differentiate themselves from huge national retailers.

  Black and stainless steel add-on cabinets that nestle under the side tables are optional and stainless work surface extensions are also available. The add-on cabinets have adjustable height wire shelves.
