Guide Review - Weber Genesis E-330 Gas Grill

For 2011, Weber has redesigned their popular line of Genesis grills.

The burners, which used to run parallel to the front of the grill, with controls on the right side table, are now run perpendicular to the front of the grill with the controls in the front. Now, after 25 years, the Weber Genesis grill is much more like all the other grills on the market, at least as far as the burner design goes.

Being Weber, this wasn't a rash decision and after three years of development, the new Genesis grill is a more efficient grill. I won't go into all the details here, but what I can say is that this grill really hasn't changed the way the grill cooks.

Of course, if you are reading this you are not interested in what the Genesis used to be, but what it is now. Put simply, this grill is one of the most efficient standard gas grills on the market as well as one of the best built. For the price, there really isn't a better grill on the market, and while this is a basic, no-frills gas grill, it does what you want, it grills hot and fast while giving you the ability to do low, indirect grilling.

To really understand the Genesis grill, you need to look inside the firebox. The three burners put out only 38,000 BTUs under 507 square inches of cooking space or about 75 BTUs per square inch. While this is low when compared to other gas grills, the Weber Genesis is more efficient than most grills. This efficient? Not really. The reduction of BTUs with the new design means that this grill will not heat up as quickly as older models. However, the addition of the sear burner in the E-330 gives it higher cooking grate temperatures than any previous Genesis Grill.

What really makes the Weber Genesis E-330 stand out is its quality. The attention to detail that takes 3 years to change the burner design can be seen in every part of this grill. This means that everything on this grill works (they actually fire up every grill before it is packaged), and since there is a 10-year warranty on virtually everything in this grill you can rely on it to last for at least a decade and I would believe longer.

This model includes a 12,000 BTU side burner under a flush mounted cover on the right side table and a 10,000 BTU sear burner. This sear burner is simply an additional, standard burner built inside the firebox between the center and left burners. This boosts the heat output on this side of the grill giving you an intense heat for searing.

      Weber-Stephen

Weber-Stephen is one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of BBQ equipment and related accessories in the world. Weber grills and smokers cook beautifully and have great features that are clever, effective and easy to use. As popularity and demand for BBQ gear grows worldwide, Weber continues to earn their long standing reputation for quality, durability and outstanding customer service and support, (7 days a week from 7am to 9pm CST), in an increasingly competitive environment. Even in this crowded marketplace, many consumers are still willing to pay more for the Weber name and they are rarely disappointed. They make a variety of cookers and smokers. Their iconic black charcoal kettles are known throughout the world. Indeed Weber is expanding globally.

Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit]* are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.

The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.

Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.

*At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.

      Weber Gas Grills

Weber gas grills are simply the gold standard. Designed intelligently with attention to details and built to last, they look good, work beautifully, and almost never break down. If they do, Weber is known for great customer service and for carrying an inventory of parts on models from years gone by. Meathead owned a Genesis for 15-years and can testify from experience.

All their burners are quality stainless steel, have a long life expectancy, and they come with electronic ignitions. The body is heavy. The casters are sturdy and lock solid. Nothing wobbles on Webers. The grease drip pans are easy to access from the front, not the back as with many other grills. Except for the portable/compact Q line, all models hold the propane tank inside the enclosed cart, and can be adapted for natural gas. They have smaller vents in the hood than most gassers which means they retain more heat than grills with more BTUs.

All have inverted V shaped "flavorizer" bars that cover and protect the burners while vaporizing drips and turning them into flavor that gets back up onto the meat. Except for the Q line, all either come with a rotisserie or you can order one as a factory accessory.

Weber gas grills come in four basic flavors, Q, Spirit, Genesis II, and Summit, each with several configurations. Models starting with an "E" are built with Weber's sturdy porcelainized enamel coated steel, and those starting with an "S" are mostly stainless steel.

Addressing an increased interest in outdoor kitchens, in 2011 Weber introduced add on "Island Cabinetry" and "Social Centers", pictured above, to integrate with the Summit lines. These range from matching side tables with enclosed storage to cart mounted side burners, enclosed trash cans and large "Social Areas" that serve as a bar with double door storage underneath. There is also a faux stone island with matching countertops.

Much has been made of 430 and 304 stainless steel: the two most popular grades used by grill manufacturers. Many other inexpensive brands use very thin, low cost 430 stainless to get that shiny showroom floor look. Premium grill makers tout their use of higher quality, higher priced 304 stainless. At some point, Weber decided to switch from 304 to 430. Although 304 is superior, 430 can work just fine if it is a thick gauge like Weber uses, but it is not as durable and one has to expect the life of the grill will be shortened. Will this decision could come back to haunt the castle in Palatine? Only time will tell. Alas, it does not appear Weber's prices were reduced to reflect the cost savings realized with this change.

      Weber Genesis Gas Grills

Weber's mid line Genesis series is one of the most popular gas grills in the USA. Everybody and their brother seems to own one. The line was totally redesigned as Genesis II with a soft launch at the end of 2016 and a full blown blitzkrieg for Spring 2017. Check out the Weber video below that describes their new GS4 Grilling System.

Many expressed concern that Genesis production has moved from the USA to China. The warranty has changed, but it's a mixed bag. Housings dropped from 25 years to 10 years, however the grates and flavorizer bars went up from 5 years for stainless steel to 10 years, and 3/2 years for porcelain coated enameled grates and bars respectively to 5 years for both. The new Infinity Ignition "Ensured to ignite every time with improved durability and enhanced 10 year warranty", is up from 2 years. Electronic components have been a major source of pain for grill manufacturers and consumers alike. High priced luxury producers have been able to use state of the art durable parts, while mass market brands had to use lower quality, less reliable parts to keep prices in line for shoppers in big box stores. That seems to be changing with component pricing going down and performance heading north, 2017 could be a pivotal year for technology in the outdoor cooking arena.

Instead of only 3-burners, Genesis II is offered in 2, 3, 4 and 6 burner configurations. There are two distinct lines: Genesis II and Genesis II LX. As the name indicates, LX offers significant upgrades at an additional cost.

      Gold Medal

This model was discontinued in 2016 and replaced by the Genesis II and II LX lines.

Genesis is one of the most popular grills in the USA, appearing in backyards coast to coast. Like all Genesis models, the EP-330 has three stainless steel burners that line up from left to right with control knobs on the front panel. This burner configuration is relatively new. Prior to 2011 Genesis burners lined up from front to back with control knobs on the right side shelf. The current design is better for 2-zone indirect cooking and frees up the side shelf for workspace. The EP-330 also includes a 10,000 BTU sear burner located between the left and middle main burners. Use of the sear burner with all three main burners boosts the EP-330 Heat Flux number (BTU/Primary Cooking Surface) from 74.95 to 94.67. A 12,000 BTU side burner is added to the right side shelf as well.

Offered in LP and NG models, the EP-330 is very similar to the slightly less expensive E-330. It has a double wall porcelain enameled hood and double cart doors in your choice of black, copper or green, just like the E models, but also offers the additional color choices of Crimson and Smoke. These colors are available for LP grills. Natural gas grills are black only. Additionally, E models come with porcelain coated cast iron grates and porcelain coated flavorizer bars, whereas EP models feature 7mm stainless steel rod grates and stainless flavor bars. Carts are painted metal with a stainless steel control panel and side shelves and four casters. The hood and shelves have cast aluminum end caps with tool hooks on the shelves and battery powered ignition.

LP models come with a "Precision Fuel Gauge" located inside the cart next to the LP tank. Hang the tank on the fuel gauge scale, it measures the weight in 20% increments and shows your approximate fuel level. An EP-310 model is offered that is the same as the EP-330, but without a sear burner and side-burner.

It is readily available online, but not at big box stores. Here's why: Weber used to give exclusivity on certain high end grills to independent dealers with the idea that consumers wanting entry level cookers could pick them up at Lowe's and Home Depot, while those looking for premium grills would be better served by independents who also carried luxury brands. Small, independent hearth and patio store owners liked this arrangement because it gave them a competitive advantage over the big guys. But Weber relaxed this policy, much to the chagrin of the indies, and now all Weber grills are available at the big chains EXCEPT for Genesis EP-310 and EP-330: a remnant of days when independent Weber dealers could easily differentiate themselves from huge national retailers.

Black and stainless steel add-on cabinets that nestle under the side tables are optional and stainless work surface extensions are also available. The add-on cabinets have adjustable height wire shelves.

Weber Spirit vs Genesis: The Ultimate Comparison

So, you’re looking for a top quality gas grill and have a hard time deciding between the Weber Spirit and the Weber Genesis ranges. It’s not an easy choice, but by isolating a few key requirements you can make the correct decision.

In this article you will find brief highlights of both ranges, key differences and a comparison table to help you find the right model for you.

      Weber Spirit versus Genesis: Quality

Both these ranges offer outstanding build quality. However, the Spirit features a lower grade of stainless steel than the Genesis. They’re still high quality, well-constructed grills, but rest assured that the extra money you pay on the Genesis grills are not just for more space and heat. They’re a few steps up from the Spirit in construction quality.

Apart from the Genesis S-models (more info below) all these products feature stainless steel burners, porcelain-enamel cast iron grates and enclosed gas storage with gas gauges and thermometers.

      The Genesis and Spirit Models

We have a handy comparison table a little lower down that will help you compare exact features at a glance. For now, just a quick overview of the different models on offer.

      Genesis: E-310 (full review), E-330, S-310, S-330

Both ranges offer basic models and more featured models.

In the Spirit range, the basic model is the E-210 (2 burners, 450 sq. inch), which offers the bare essentials you need to get grilling, including a handy extra in the LP fuel gauge. The E-220 model adds a 12,000 BTU side burner to the E-210 setup.

Next, you step up to the Spirit E-310. This is a 3-burner 529 sq. inch model that offers slightly more cooking space than the E-210. Apart from that and the extra burner, they’re virtually identical. The E-320 upgrades the E-310 with a 12,000 BTU side burner.

The Genesis range starts with the E-310, a 637 square inch cooking surface powered by 3 burners and all the essential features you need, without added extras. For extras, you can upgrade to the Genesis E-330 (reviewed here), which adds both a side burner and a sear station to the E-310.

      The S-Models

Available in both the Spirit and Genesis ranges are the S-models: the Spirit S-210 and the Genesis S-310 and S-330. They are exactly the same as their E-model counterparts, apart from the following:

      – stainless steel cooking grates and flavorizer bars instead of porcelain-enamel coated cast iron (Genesis only)

      – stainless steel shroud instead of porcelain enamel shroud (Genesis and Spirit)

      So, Weber Spirit or Genesis?

Ok, we’ve looked at the basic differences between the models. We’ve established that the Genesis range offers better quality stainless steel construction, but you pay considerably extra for that.

So, with the Spirit still being a well-constructed unit, it comes down to your requirements in the end. How much cooking space you need, what extras you need and what your budget can handle.

Personally we feel a Genesis is worth it from a long term investment perspective. These grills are built to last, and a model like the Genesis E-330 will give you everything you’ll ever need from a gas grill in this price range. Spending a bit more from the start has its advantages in the long term.

However, the choice is yours. The one thing we can recommend is that you get a model with a side burner. You don’t want to save fifty bucks now by skipping it, only to realize a few months down the road that it would have been nice to have. Buy once and buy right.

To help you compare features, you’ll find a comparison table below.

      Comparison Table

To simplify things we left out the 210 and 310 Spirit models, for two reasons:

1 – the only difference is the side burner that you get with the 220/320 models

2 – the price differences are so small that you may as well get the 220/320 and be done with it

This table highlights and compares all the major features of the most popular models in the Weber Spirit vs Genesis range.

      Flavorizer Bars

These angled bars direct juices away from the burners to prevent flare-ups that could burn your meal.

Individually controlled burners run from front to back to allow more space for indirect cooking. You can see the sear station controls here.

The Weber Genesis S-330 Flavorizer bars cover the burners so that drippings to not flare up and impact food taste, and avoids clogs.

Similar to other grills in the Genesis family, the Weber Genesis S-330 includes a front mounted control panel and individual electronic ignition system for each of the three stainless steel burners. In comparison, the S-330 and the S-310 have many features in common. Both models offer the following similarities:

      • 7mm diameter stainless steel rod cooking grates
      • 38,000 BTU-per-hour input.
      • Primary cooking area of 507 square inches
      • Warming rack area of 130 square inches
      • 637 square inches of total cooking area

The cooking area on the stainless steel S-330 and the S-310 models are large enough to entertain the family or friends with your finest grilling creations. The wide and deep drip trays are accessible from the front of the grill for easy clean up.

There are only a few differences in these two grill models. The S-330 adds the following features:

      • 12,000 BTU side burner
      • 10,000 BTU sear station
      • Six tool hooks
      • Owner’s manual and recipes
      • Limited warranty

      The Sear Station

The searing station is an essential additional feature for cooking excellent steaks. It helps to heat the grill faster (500o in five minutes). Also, great for cooking bacon, or other accompaniments to your meal. The two stainless steel work stations give a lot of area for food preparation, and the warming rack is a nice size to be sure that all of your meal is hot and ready at the same time.

The high-powered 10,000 BTU sear station is designed to give on-demand high heat for searing

The Weber Genesis S-330 grill is available for use with liquid propane or natural gas for a few dollars more. Propane tank is not included, however, the grill comes with a 10-foot flexible hose for natural gas. The largest in the Genesis family of grills, the S-330 is engineered with the latest technology and design features in the grilling market. Weber makes a Genesis island that is compatible for cabinet space that is sold separately. Weber grills are built to last a long time, so the company also recommends a grill cover to keep yours looking new for many years.

      • Frames are checked for extra strength and stability
      • Grills are engineered to assemble in under an hour
      • Grills are engineered to be fuel-efficient

The Flavorizer bars are angled to direct juices down and away from the burners. This gives you flavor without flare-ups. The taste is like nothing you’ve had before from a backyard grill.

Genesis grills come in five outstanding choices for your outdoor grilling pleasure. Known for spacious cooking areas and first-class engineering, the Genesis series offers many similarities between these grills, but each has something different to offer for an excellent outdoor barbeque. Compare the E-310 to S-310

These two grills are almost identical with three stainless steel burners, 38,000 BTU-per-hour input,

and individual electronic ignition for each of the burners. They both have a total cooking area of 637 square inches, making it easy to cook a variety of items at the same time. Both the E-31 and the S-310 are constructed with a front mount control system, porcelain-enameled heat deflectors and two stainless steel work surfaces. The 310 versions are the perfect size for most families and comes in both propane and natural gas varieties.

Liquid Propane (LP) models the grills have an enclosed tank storage area and precision fuel gauge. Propane tank is not included in LP models and the natural gas (NG) grill includes a 10 foot flexible hose. The differences can be seen in the lists below:

      • Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates
      • Porcelain-enameled Flavorizer® bars
      • Porcelain-enameled shroud with a center-mounted thermometer
      • Available color for Natural Gas (NG) grills: black
      • Available color for LP grill: black, copper, green

      • 7mm diameter stainless steel rod cooking grates
      • Stainless steel Flavorizer® bars
      • Stainless steel shroud with a center-mounted thermometer
      • Entire grill is stainless steel

      Compare E-330 to S-330

Another pair of similar gas grills in the Genesis family are the top-of-the-line E-330 and the S-330 models. Either of these grills will cook up anything you like, with Weber‘s quality and reputation standing behind them. The individual electronic ignition makes grilling on the three stainless steel burners enjoyable and entertaining. The flush-mounted side burner and 10,000 BTU-per-hour Sear Station is Weber’s way to give you steakhouse-quality in your own back yard. Differences in the two versions are noted below:

      Weber Genesis E-330 differences

      • Porcelain enameled cast-iron cooking grates
      • Porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars
      • Porcelain enameled shroud with center mounted thermometer

      Weber Genesis S-330 differences

      • 7mm diameter stainless steel rod cooking grates
      • Stainless steel Flavorizer bars
      • Stainless steel enameled shroud with center mounted thermometer

The largest in the Genesis family of grills are engineered with the individual electronic ignition, 38,000 BTUs in the main burner; 12,000 BTUs in the side burner; and a 10,000 BTU sear station. These options along with the total cooking area of 637 square inches presents numerous grilling possibilities.

Both the Genesis E-330 and the S-330 come with two stainless steel work stations that provide plenty of space for food preparation. The front-mounted control panel, painted steel frame, and porcelain-enameled heat deflectors set these models in a class by themselves. For convenience The E-330 and S-330 provide six tool hooks, owner’s guide with recipes, and limited warranties.

E-320 compared to the E-310 and the E-330

For the sake of comparison, the E-320 is a bit different representing a cross between the E-310 and the E-330. As it compares to the E-310, both have three stainless steel burners, and run with 38,000 BTU input. Both also have the trademark individual electronic ignition and porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars. Even the porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates are similar, and the cooking area is 637 square inches on both Genesis grill models.

The Weber Genesis E-320 also offers a 10-foot flexible hose for natural gas grills and are available in the same colors as the E-330: Black for natural gas grills, and a choice of black, copper or green for the liquid propane versions. The only difference between the E-320 and the E-310 is that the 320 model has an added feature – a 12,000 BTU-per-hour input flush-mounted side burner, similar to the E-330.

The Genesis family of grills offers both stainless steel and porcelain-enamel products to give you, the grill master, a choice. Both materials are used for outdoor grills because they are rust-resistant, hold up well in harsh weather, are durable and have heat-conducting properties. Do you like the look of shiny silver, or stylish black porcelain enamel? Or maybe you prefer a porcelain painted color, such as copper or green. The advantage to a stainless steel grill, it will last a very long time if cared for properly. The porcelain-enamel has a tendency to chip over time. If properly maintained, there is not much difference between stainless and porcelain-enamel. It’s a personal choice.

Weber Genesis S-330 is backed by a rock-solid warranty. You KNOW your Weber Genesis S-330 is going to be around for the long haul.

      Weber Genesis E-330 Review

The Weber Genesis E-330 is one of the best selling gas grills on the market right now. Given that it costs around $800 (on discount at a major retailer like Amazon) this achievement has to tell you that Weber is doing something right with this grill.

In this review we’ll dissect this beautifully made gas grill and see why it is so popular.

      Weber Genesis E-330 Features

Before we get started, just a quick rundown of the features you get with the Genesis E-330:

      – 3 Stainless steel burners, 38,000 BTU

      – 12,000 BTU side burner

      – 637 inches total cooking area (507 primary, 130 warming rack)

      – porcelain-enameled cast iron cooking grates

      – porcelain-enameled flavorizer bars

Made from solid grades of stainless steel, the Genesis arrives in a heavy box. Once unpacked, the assembly will take you around 2 hours. It is not that difficult, but there is a lot to do.

Do yourself a favor and use a socket wrench instead of the tool provided.

Once assembled you can move the grill to where it should be on some very effective heavy duty casters. Despite its weight, the grill is really easy to move around on these. They can lock, and that’s certainly recommended once you have parked it where you want it.

      Heating up

Getting flames is easy once you have connected the gas. One click of the electronic igniter and you’re on your way. How fast the grill will gain heat with all three burners going will depend a little bit on the environment. On a normal, pleasant day with average temperatures you can expect to get to 500 degrees in about 10 – 12 minutes.

This just goes to show that, despite many people always carrying on about Weber’s low BTU ratings, the actual design of the product is more important. We’ve seen Char-Broil and other cheaper brands that don’t cook as well or evenly as Webers despite putting out hundreds of extra BTU.

Steak junkies, rejoice. The sear burner on the Genesis E-330 will soon become one of your favorite features. It makes for some sizzling steak grilling, and the grate leaves nice, thick sear marks.

In our Genesis E-310 review we noted how evenly heat is distributed throughout the grill, and that’s true of the E-330 as well. There are simply no cold spots and even food stuck in the corners of the grill cook surprisingly evenly.

The side burner is a useful addition. Use it to heat food up, fry some onions, whatever you need an extra little burner for.

      Minor problem

One thing we have to point out is that there is very little resistance/feedback on the knobs. Some people have mentioned that they accidentally turned the gas on by simply pulling a cover over the grill. This is something to watch out for as it is very easy to accidentally turn the gas knobs. Of course, for safety sake, you should turn the gas off at the tank once you’re done cooking.

      Weber Genesis E-330 User Experiences

To give you a better idea of what you can expect from this grill, here are some actual results from verified purchasers of the Weber Genesis E-330:

“Once all that was taken care of, I fired it up full blast and it got up to 500 degrees in less than 10 minutes. I cooked my first steak on this grill tonight and the outcome was perfect.” Jeff True (Amazon.com Verified Purchase)

“I have never grilled on something this good. This really has no “hot spots” as I have become accustomed to. There are three burners that work great and ignite right away. There is also a sear burner that really works. In less then ten minutes I can throw any kind of meat on there and have a perfect sear in minutes, then move to a lower burner setting and actually cook the meat. The sear is unbelievable.” Patrick K. Miller (Amazon.com Verified Purchase)

“I was torn between getting this grill with the sear burner or the other one for $100 less. Trust me, the sear burner is absolutely 100% worth it! I can brown my meat to keep the good stuff in a few minutes. The flavorizer bars are an awesome idea, and add lots of flavor to my food. While this grill only has 38,000 BTU’s don’t let it fool you. The first time I turned this grill on, it went from 0-400 Degree’s in 4 minutes, Literally.” J. Shays (Amazon.com Verified Purchase)

      Weber Genesis E-330 Review Conclusion

The Genesis series is all about quality. This is a heavy duty gas grill. Quality stainless steel construction. Great heat distribution. The legendary Weber support.

The sear burner is simply a great addition over the E-310, and if you love grilling steaks you should bite the bullet and fork out the extra $100 for the E-330. You won’t regret it.

Great heat distribution, fast cooking, built to last. The Weber Genesis E-330 deserves its stellar reputation.
