    Weber One-Touch Charcoal Kettle Grill

This is an American icon for a reason.

This review was published on April 25, 2013. Since then, this product may have been discontinued or replaced. Pricing and availability may differ from what is stated in the review.

    Introduction

It's difficult to think of an object more distinctively American than a Weber kettle grill. If there's ever a consumer product deemed worthy to appear on the currency that buys it, it's a fair bet that the classic Weber will box out the Fender Stratocaster, Ford Mustang, and Louisville Slugger. With its iconic shape, history, and ubiquity in garages across America—it's priced for the people between $99 and $149—the Weber One-Touch charcoal grills continue to perform just as they did back in the '50s when they were invented. Because they got it right the first time.

    Design, Features, & Usability

    You know the grill.

You're probably already familiar with the Weber kettle grill's classic design and features—or lack thereof. The simplicity of the grill might be elegant to some, but the lack of storage or hooks can be annoying—hanging the grill tools on the handle does not work that well. The classic One-Touch Silver design does have a few usability issues, which are either "quirks" or "difficulties" depending on your mood. While eponymous "One Touch" system—a handle controls three arms that sweep ash out holes in the bottom—does make it easy to get the coals into the ash pan, it's almost impossible empty the shallow pan without spilling or having a Big Lebowski funeral situation. Maneuvering the grill on its ludicrous wheels and one proper handle is the other little quirk—though rolling it while holding the lid handle helps a bit.

The One-Touch Gold—a step up from the silver—addresses its shortcomings by adding a few things that might make it worth the extra $50. Instead of catching ashes in an open shallow plate, the Gold uses a closed cylinder that's a bit more user friendly. Unlike the Silver, the Gold has two handles, which allow users to actually get a good grip on the hot grill if it needs to be moved—and the second handle comes with tool hooks. The Gold's improvements extend past fixing the Silver's quirks—the Gold adds a thermometer to metal lid.

In its simplicity, the One-Touch only has one explicit means of control—a four-holed vent on the lid to keep things smokey. But as every charcoal griller knows, the maestro exercises control by shuffling the coals around and knowing when—and how much—to cover with the lid. More advanced users can play around with indirect heat (barbecuing) by corralling the coals opposite the food, or place a pan of water on top of the coals to keep things moist.

    Performance

The One-Touch isn't ubiquitous by accident.

It's no accident that this grill has stayed as popular as Elvis, since Elvis. Obviously, there isn't much to a Weber kettle—it's little more than a small fire pit—so the user is ultimately responsible for performance. But since it's the simplest and most ancient way to cook, it's not exactly difficult. The charcoal factor proves to be both the advantage and disadvantage. Clearly charcoal preheat times aren't good compared to many gas grills, but the lack of burners makes it possible to arrange the coals however you want, either providing uniform temperatures across the grilling surface, or a hot spot on one side.

    Conclusion

If it was good enough for your grandfather.

Weber got it right back in the '50s with this affordable, simple, and versatile grill, making it a great choice for anyone who wants that charcoal taste (accept no substitutions, some maintain). Though the One-Touch Silver has a few usability quirks (only one handle, annoying ashtray, no tool hooks), we don't think most people will really mind, though the One-Touch Gold will iron out those wrinkles for $50 more. Either way, the grill and its charcoals yield very uniform heat without hotspots—a benefit of not having burners. When I was a kid, I used to complain about our old charcoal grill's slow heat up and ask my dad why he didn't want to switch to gas so we wouldn't have to wait. "Y'know what," he said as I helped him pour the coals into the chimney starter, "I don't mind waiting."

I would buy this product again and again

I have three sizes of the Weber charcoal grills and have nothing but great tings to say about them. My 22 1/2 in weber is 21 years old and has been outside ever since I bought it and I live in Wisconsin where we get some pretty good winters and it's just like the day I bought it, almost. I also have The Q 120 gas Weber and am going to byt The Genisis 310 soon.

    Great smaller size and price!

We are not expert grillers and wanted a charcoal grill that would be easy to use, easy to move and "no fuss." We bought a gas grill two years ago which we have used twice. In our inexperience it seemed to take too long to check the gas, the gas lines, clean out cobwebs if necessary and so on, plus it was much too large for my husband and me. The 18.5" silver grill is perfect and grills food for more than two people, for sure, and would not consider this a "two-person grill" at all. We much prefer using charcoal for a real outdoor flavor. Don't let the size and light weight deter you. It's just what we were looking for. After reading the reviews on Weber products my mission was to find that product at Ace--great people and great service. Ace is the place!

    Outstanding Product

Outstanding product. I have owned Webers for years, this particular model for 3 years now. I grill several times a week, and a chimney is a must have for starting. I have found using a wet/dry vac is the easiest and quickest way to clean this grill. I also smoke a lot, using indirect heating techniques. this grill does an outstanding job doing traditional southern BBQ. absolutely no need for more expensive, less effective smokers. I expect many more excellent years of service from this grill. I too keep it outside in the winter, uncovered and have never had a problem.

    A Perfect Grill

I had my Weber grill for more than 35 years. We use to grill out every weekend year round. Living in Wisconsin not even the winter could hurt this little charm. I never covered it. I just let it sit out in the snow until the following time I used it. Recently, I decided to give in an get a new one. I really thought there was nothing wrong with the old. just that the kids thought I needed a new one. I didn't think so!What do they know?

I have used this grill for 32 years and it has always been outdoors on a covered porch. I have had to replace nothing. The ember grill below has to be turned over about every 5 years. I have never cleaned anything except the outside and, of course, dumping the ash. I scrape the grill and give the coals a good time heating up the grill and then wipe with paper towels.

Weber One-Touch SIlver 22.5" Charcoal Grill

    Weber-Stephen

Weber-Stephen is one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of BBQ equipment and related accessories in the world. Weber grills and smokers cook beautifully and have great features that are clever, effective and easy to use. As popularity and demand for BBQ gear grows worldwide, Weber continues to earn their long standing reputation for quality, durability and outstanding customer service and support, (7 days a week from 7am to 9pm CST), in an increasingly competitive environment. Even in this crowded marketplace, many consumers are still willing to pay more for the Weber name and they are rarely disappointed. They make a variety of cookers and smokers. Their iconic black charcoal kettles are known throughout the world. Indeed Weber is expanding globally.

Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit]* are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.

The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.

Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.

*At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.

    Weber Charcoal Grills

In 2015 Weber changed the names of several popular charcoal grills and added a few new features. Don't worry though, they are still the iconic kettles you grew up with. These classic grills have played a big part in BBQ history and helped spread the joy of outdoor cooking across America and beyond. The 22.5" kettle is by far the most popular backyard grill in the world for under a hundred dollars. The body and lid are pressed from solid sheets of steel so there are no welds to rust, and coated with a durable powder coated baked on porcelain enamel that lasts for decades. The lower intake vents double as an ash collection system and the three legs with two wheels make rolling it around a snap. It is lightweight, there are few parts, and simplicity reigns. The lids fit tightly so oxygen control, and therefore heat control, is very good. And, with the exception of the Ranch Kettle, they are inexpensive.

AmazingRibs.com science advisor, Dr. Greg Blonder, observes, "Most people believe the Weber is a parabolic reflector, focusing heat emitted by the coals directly on the grill. A parabolic reflector is only effective when the heat source is tiny, intense and located at the focal point. This is not true in the case of the Weber, where the heat source is a sheet of coals spread over a large area. On the other hand, the Weber gets many things right. While the parabola won't create a beam of infra-red energy, the high almost vertical side walls reflect the infra-red image of the coals from side to side- like images of your head pinging back and forth between two mirrors at the barbershop. So this 'reflection gallery effect' does increase the heat intensity a bit compared to cooking over an open pit, where heat emitted to the sides is lost. The system is efficient, burning a minimum number of briquets during cooking." Probably no other single invention has influenced the American diet more since the invention of the electric refrigerator.

Weber Charcoal Grills are offered in four basic configurations: the small, portable Smokey Joe Series, the larger One-Touch kettles on three legs, the Performer Series mounted on carts and the oversize Ranch Kettle. They also offer three models of the popular Weber Smokey Mountain smokers. In 2016 they introduced Weber Summit Charcoal Grills, multifunction cookers that are effective smokers and grills under one hood.

    Weber Charcoal Series

When George Stephen introduced his simple and elegant Charcoal Kettle Grill design, mankind took a step up in the evolutionary process. Meathead wrote an article for The Huffington Post commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Weber Kettle. He observed, "the innovation that made grilling and cooking outdoors the great American pastime came in 1951 when George Stephen, Sr., frustrated by his inability to control the heat in his backyard grill, had the welders at the Weber Brothers Metal Works, where he worked, cut up a buoy that was to be used for Lake Michigan boating. The Weber Kettle was born and introduced in 1952. Among its innovations was a tight-fitting lid and adjustable air vents that allowed the cook to control temperature. Today's design is not far from the original kettle pictured below, and it is by far the most popular backyard grill in the world".

    Gold Medal

The Weber One-Touch Silver 22.5" Charcoal Grill has 363 square inches of cooking surface and sells for around $100. It is the basic unadorned low price Kettle, and a perfectly fine cooking tool just the same. Ash is swept through the vent holes in the bottom under the grill by a lever beneath the bowl and it drops into an aluminum pan. This grill is excellent for all types of cooking from searing steaks to smoking ribs.

Weber Kettles enjoy evergreen popularity from one generation to the next because they are durable and you can cook just about anything you want on them. Pile up coal on one side to sear steaks or set up 2-zone roasting, Build a nice even bed of coal for general cooking. Add a smokenator and make great smoked ribs and brisket. Another useful accessory is the Smoke EZ Grill Conversion Kit, which not only turns your kettle into a smoker, but increases capacity as well. The tight seal between the lid and body makes the dampers very effective and provides excellent heat control.

Let's debunk a myth: The parabolic shape of the Weber Kettle is not a more efficient heat reflector than other shapes. By far the vast majority of the heat is radiated directly from the surface of the glowing coals with some more reflected from the sides. Very little heat is being reflected off the curved bottom of the bowl. There is a solid barrier in the way: The bed of coals. Any heat that hits the bottom of the kettle just bounces back into the coal pile. So the parabolic shape of the kettle is no more efficient than a square box.

    45 Day No Hassle Returns

We want you to love what you buy! But if you don’t, we offer a simple “No Hassle Returns” policy. We allow you to return all new, unused, unassembled, and resalable items in their original packaging within 45 days of delivery for a refund (minus the original and return shipping costs incurred by BBQGuys.com). Naturally, if your return is because of our error, you are not responsible for any shipping costs.

    • If your return request is due to product defect or damage, we will first work with you to get the product repaired. If repair is not possible, then we’ll work with you to get it replaced.
    • If your return will be coming back via freight truck, we will require you to provide us a photo before your return will be authorized. This can be as simple as a cell phone pic! We just need a “before” picture in case there is any damage to the item on its way back to us.
    • To expedite the returns process, before shipping the item(s) back, make sure they are clean, the packaging is sufficient to prevent damage, and (if necessary) you note all defects along with the photos taken.

    Important information about refund eligibility:

To be eligible for a “No Hassle Return,” items must be returned within 45 days of delivery in “Like New” condition. “Like New” condition is when a returned item is unused, unassembled, and has been returned in the original packaging.

    • Full refunds do not apply to certain items, including clearance items, gift cards, gift certificates, items that have been personalized, and items clearly marked as “non-returnable,” such as products sold as “Warehouse Deals.”
    • The costs of return shipping are deducted from your refund or merchandise credit.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item has been inspected by us in our warehouse.
    • Refunds must be applied to the same credit card, debit card, or other form of payment used in the original transaction.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item is inspected upon return delivery.
    • BBQGuys.com reserves the right to refuse a refund on a returned item if:
      • The item that has been returned does not match the original item shipped to the customer.
      • The returned item is missing parts or the original product’s packaging.
      • The item was damaged during the return shipment due to improper or insufficient packaging.
      • The item being returned has been obviously heavily used (such as significant charcoal buildup inside a grill).
      • The item has been assembled in a way that would impede proper packaging for return shipping.

In exchange situations, there are TWO options:

    1. If you need the product right away, you can purchase a replacement on a new order to get it shipped out as soon as possible. Then return the original item and we’ll refund you for the original once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition.
    2. If you can wait a little longer, return the original item and once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition, we’ll refund you for that purchase, then have you purchase the replacement on a new order and we’ll ship the replacement as soon as possible.

I have been ordering from BBQ Guys around 5 years - they have consistently provided wonderful service and the people on the phones have always been warm, friendly and patient - I mostly order online but every now and then you need a live person and these folks are the best - totally 5 STARS!

We have been working with BBQ Guys to finish our new outdoor kitchen. Seda did great work explaining everything to us and helping us select just the right equipment at just the right price. He is a real credit to your business.

I ordered an outdoor refrigerator and a Primo XL cooker from the BBQGuys online store. The prices were very competitive. I was pleased with the communications and prompt processing of the order. Both arrived via freight carrier. The firebox on the Primo cooker was broken. The customer service was great and the firebox was replaced quickly. I highly recommend BBQGuys. I will be shopping with them again.

Completely happy with the products I have purchased through BBQGuys. While one of the appliances I ordered did stop working within a years time Kimberly in customer care took control of my issue in a prompt, friendly and professional manner replacing the appliance without any frustration or hardship on my part. Easy and actually painless as my expectation was, when I started the process, that I was going to be in for a long drawn out ordeal. With the quality of products they sell and the customer care they offer I will always make BBQGuys my number one choice of outdoor kitchen appliances.

I would highly recommend using BBGuys.com to purchase a bbq. Dominic was very helpful in finding the right size grill to fit my needs. He was great in keeping in touch with me through the process. I would recommend calling if you have any questions as Dominic assisted me through the entire process.

Weber 761001 22.5" One Touch Kettle Grill Parts

Enter your engine's type number in this search field to show the parts that match your engine.

Your engine's type number is the second part of the model number stamped on your Briggs & Stratton engine (see picture).

Having trouble getting your grill to light up? A common cause of this issue is a defective ignition switch. We'll show you how easy it is to replace the ignitor switch on your Char-Broil infrared g.

Learn to replace the burners on your Char-Broil grill in a matter of minutes.

Have a rusty, old, or damaged handle on your gas grill that needs replacing? Follow the steps outlined below to replace the handle on your grill in just minutes.

Properly Assemble a Weber Charcoal Grill (That Won't Collapse)

The Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5-Inch Charcoal Grill is our favorite kettle grill, but it has a flaw.

If you don’t install the three-leg assembly supporting the kettle correctly the first time, there’s no going back. Removing and reassembling certain parts will cause them to loosen, and sooner or later when you try to move the grill around your backyard, it will start to fall apart or even collapse. With its illustration-only manual, Weber doesn’t make this critical assembly easy—nor does it warn you of the consequences if you don’t get it right the first time. Here are some tips to help properly assemble the grill.

    1. ATTACH 2 LEGS TO TRIANGLE: Following manual, slide 2 legs that get wheels onto long rod of triangle "shelf."

    2. PUT HUBCAPS ON STRAIGHT: Slide wheels onto rod next to legs, then gently tap hubcaps on with hammer, taking special care to put on straight. If hubcaps go on at angle, DO NOT REMOVE. Their interior is made of soft aluminum that will mold itself around rod. Removing and reattaching will loosen fit, making hubcaps—and wheels—more prone to falling off.

    3. IDENTIFY WHERE WHEELED LEGS GO: Turn kettle upside down and identify 2 short tubes directly opposite 1 handle. This is where you will insert legs with wheels. If you insert wheeled legs in wrong tubes, rolling grill will stress contact points, loosening legs and causing grill to become unstable.

    4. INSERT WHEELED LEGS; DON'T TWIST! Insert legs straight into tubes without twisting or rocking. DO NOT REMOVE. Small buttons inside tubes create indentations in soft aluminum of legs as you insert them, ensuring tight fit. Twisting, rocking, or removing and reinserting can lead to too-wide grooves and loose legs.

    5. ATTACH TRIANGLE TO THIRD LEG: Insert hooked point of triangle into third leg, making sure it goes into hole pointing UP, so it will point DOWN when kettle is turned upright, helping to hold legs together.

    6. INSERT THIRD LEG INTO KETTLE: Insert third leg into remaining short tube without twisting or rocking.
