Weber Q 100 Portable Gas Grill Review - Discontinued

This model has been discontinued. it is replaced by the Weber Q-1000.

This portable grill is a master of design. It packs up small with the side tables folding into the grill body yet is large enough to cook up several steaks at once. It uses standard 14 ounce propane tanks (not included) and has a 189 square-inch porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate that makes it a big, little grill.

At around $160 this grill has Weber's durability and a unique design that has won several awards. Not only a great grill to cook on, it is cool looking too.

    • Durable construction
    • Strong grilling abilities for a portable

    • Push button piezoelectric ignition
    • Wide temperature control valve
    • Porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate

Guide Review - Weber Q 100 Portable Gas Grill Review

Originally labeled the "Baby-Q" this small member of the Q family is a excellently constructed little gas grill that gives you plenty of space and power for the size.

What makes the Q grill work is the construction. With a cast aluminum body that holds in heat and a heavy porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate to transfer heat to the food this grill cooks like a full sized unit in a portable size. The 189 square inches of cooking space is large enough to grill several steaks at once so you won't have to grill in shifts.

Great attention to detail has been paid on this grill. In fact Weber spent 5 years developing this line of portable grills. All in all if you are willing to pay the nearly $160 price tag for this portable you're going to get a really good grill and at the rate they are selling, I think this is going to be a product that will be around for a while.

Because of the construction this is a heavy little grill. While not suited for being carried long distances this is a perfect grill for trips to the beach or park. It is also a great grill for apartment dwellers that want a real gas grill but just don't have the space for one.

The only difference between the Q 100 and the Q 120 are the foldout side tables. Since you are probably putting this on a table to begin with, the side tables are really not of value. I recommend saving yourself $30USD and buying this model instead.

    Review: Weber Q 100 (Discontinued)

This extraordinary little grill defies what we as consumers expect out of a portable grill. It’s small, yet it will grill just about anything you can think of.

And it is built to last. High quality materials are used throughout to make sure that it will last for years.

But what about its size? Is it too small?

It has been replaced by a new model. Check back soon for a new review, or click here to see it at Amazon!

    About the Weber Q 100

This is a very high-quality grill for a very reasonable price. Made with solid materials meant to handle both heat and the elements, the Q 100 is known for its durability and longevity.

It features an aluminum cast lid and body, which makes it ideal for convection-style BBQ cooking.

A large, circular burner made from stainless steel won’t rust and provides 8500 BTU’s.

The porcelain coated cast iron grate has a cooking surface area of 189 square inches, providing enough room to cook everything from hot dogs and hamburgers to steaks and chicken.

The frame is reinforced with nylon. Combine that with the aluminum materials of the grill’s body, and you have a portable gas grill that’s rust proof and weather resistant.

    Other Noteworthy Features

    • Easy to clean with removable, disposable drip pan
    • Easy to carry around with sturdy side handles, weighs 29 lbs
    • Sensitive temperature controls make finding the right grilling temperature easy

    What’s Included?

The Q 100 comes in a few pieces, but expect it to arrive mostly assembled. In the box you will find the assembled body, the lid, cooking grate, control knob, handle, and hardware to fully assemble the unit.

Also included are the removable drip catch pan, and one disposable liner. The manual which guides you through assembly and a recipe book with a few great grilling ideas are also included.

Otherwise, no extra accessories are included.

    Initial Assembly

Very little assembly is needed, and fortunately what is needed is very easy. The only tool you will need is a Phillips screw driver. Total assembly time should only take about 20 minutes.

Assembling the unit requires attaching the lid to the body and front lid handle to the lid. The control knob also needs to be attached, but that doesn’t require any tools. Once that is completed, simply place the cooking grate inside, slide the catch pan lined with the disposable liner into place underneath, and you’re ready to go!

For more details, click here to see the manual.

    Dimensions and Weight

    • Height: 23.5 inches with lid open, 14 inches high with lid closed
    • Width: 27 inches from side to side
    • Depth: 20.5 inches from front to back

    Fuel Sources

The Q 100 uses disposable propane cylinders with a capacity of 14.1 oz or 16.4 oz which attaches to right side of the unit underneath the carry handle.

The 16 oz cylinder, if used as a grill and not a convection oven, should last for at least 5 meals.

Using the larger and more economical refillable propane tanks is possible with the addition of an adapter hose, sold separately.

The Weber Q 100 gas grill is covered by a fairly extensive warranty.

All cast aluminum parts (body, lid) have a 5-year warranty, excluding paint which has a 2 year warranty that excludes fading or discoloration. The thermoplastic/thermoset parts, which I can only imagine includes parts that are expected to get hot, are also covered for 5 years, excluding fading. All other parts are covered for two years.

Make sure to keep your receipt or proof of purchase to ensure that any replacements are made hassle-free.

If you have any problems at all with the Q 100, I highly recommend talking with Weber’s customer service. They are friendly and are very quick to resolve problems and send out replacement parts.

    Available Accessories

There are several accessories available for this grill, including rolling and stationary carts, a griddle that fits perfectly on top of the grill, covers, and much more. What I like about Weber’s accessories for their Q line is that none of them are outrageously priced.

    Specifications Overview

    In-Depth Review:

    How Portable Is It?

While the Weber Q 100 is quite small and reasonably light, this grill does have a bit of extra heft to it because of the cast iron grill grate. Still, at 29 lbs, it doesn’t weigh that much.

The rest of the design makes it look quite nice, and it does have two durable heat-resistant handles for carrying on either side of the grill. With that said, it might be a bit awkward to carry it around for any serious distances.

Its shape is also a concern. Because it has a very round top, it might be difficult to pack around if you have limited trunk space in your car.

Otherwise, its small size is convenient for those of us who are confined to small balconies and patios, and works well for those who need a small grill to take on their RV trips. As for tailgate parties, this grill will cook up a bunch of burgers and hot dogs quickly, but grilling large numbers of steaks may take some time as you will run out of room quickly.

    Cooking Capabilities

Due to its small size, I recommend this grill for cooking for two people.

It might not be very well suited for a family of four unless you only plan on using it to cook meats and not veggies at the same time.

It’s also perfect if all you plan on using it for is cooking hotdogs and preformed hamburgers, as the grilling surface will easily handle a dozen jumbo dogs or half a dozen burgers at once.

It heats up fairly quickly. Even with only 8500 BTU’s, it can easily reach temperatures of 500° – 550° F on the highest setting. This is because the aluminum body is very good at retaining heat.

It also disburses heat very evenly across the entire cooking surface. I noticed no cold or hot spots when grilling up six 1 strip steaks.

The cast iron grill great itself is designed to cover the areas right above the burner, so I also noticed very few flareups and no smoking.

For searing in those beautiful grill marks into your steak and chicken, you will need to preheat the grill with the lid down for about 10 minutes beforehand, as the grate will need some time to heat up – but make no mistake – it will!

I really like how easy it is to clean this grill. It rarely needs a thorough cleaning, but even when it does, the Weber Q 100 is very simple to clean up properly.

While the grill is still warm but safe to touch, use a wire brush to remove food debris. You can also wash the grate in your sink with warm, soapy water.

The burner rarely needs attention because the grill grate is designed to block drips from falling on it, but if you notice that holes in the burner tube are blocked, lightly brush it with a wire brush.

As for the rest of the grill, because it’s designed to drain grease out of the bottom, a simple wipe with a soft cloth and warm soapy water is really all it needs. The best time to do this is before the Weber has completely cooled down.

Then, simply empty out the catch pan that has collected grease and food debris drained from the unit.

Disposable drip pan liners are sold in sets of 10 for around $6-$8. They are sturdy enough that they can last quite a few meals with proper care and cleaning, but for those that want to avoid the extra cost, lining the catch pan with aluminum foil will work.

I cannot emphasize enough how solid the Q 100 is. This is a grill that was designed to last for years, which really should be no surprise if you have seen any of Weber’s products.

The base and lid of the firebox are made of cast aluminum. The frame is made of a really tough fiberglass that will resist heat. The burner is made of stainless steel, and the cast iron grill grate has a porcelain coating.

What does all of that mean?

It means that no part of it will rust out. It’s not some cheap metal that will dent. I don’t think you can damage this thing short of beating it with a hammer, but even that would take a little work.

While I didn’t have one single issue, I have read few complaints regarding regulator failure. In a few cases, this might be an actual problem which Weber’s customer service will be more than happy to send you out a new one.

More often than not, what happens is the safety valve in the regulator is tripped. It is very sensitive to pressure changes, especially when connected to large tanks.

Fortunately, the safety valve in the regulator will reset if the gas is turned off or removed for a few minutes. Check out the Q 100’s manual for detailed instructions on how to work with the regulator.

    Pros & Cons

    • Small and compact makes it perfect for small spaces
    • Very easy to clean and maintain
    • Light weight yet solidly built
    • Designed to cook as well as a full size grill
    • Perfect for RV campers and apartment balconies

    • Does not have its own stand, but a stand is available separately.
    • It’s shape doesn’t lend to packing very easily in small trunks
    • Shape also doesn’t allow for long, tall roasts, as sides curve down
    • Disposable drip tray liners are an extra expense, but can be replaced by aluminum foil

    Ratings and Recommendations

    Consumer Ratings

Most customers are extremely satisfied with their Q 100 purchase.

A whopping 95% rated it 4 stars or better!

Even many of those who have minor complaints about the grill often also state that they are being overly picky.

Negative complaints I saw were mostly from people who received bum regulators, or who hadn’t read the owners’ manual. One reviewer gave it one star because he/she couldn’t find a place that sold the propane, though I’m sure they couldn’t have looked very hard.

    Our Recommendation

I really like all of the Weber Q grills, and the Weber Q 100 is certainly not a bad choice. The entire line has received more positive reviews compared to negative than any other line of grills, which tells you just how happy the majority of owners are.

If you are looking for something small that will easily feed a couple of people meat and veggies, or if you want something to handle just meat for a small family, this is an ideal grill.

I recommend this grill for those looking for a small tabletop grill for balconies and for RVers. Campers with extra storage space will also be delighted by it.

    Our Rating

I docked one star from the Q 100’s portability because of its odd shape which made it difficult to pack around in a vehicle.

Everything else about my experience with the Weber Q 100 was a total treat.

    Weber Q 300

This model has been discontinued. It is replaced by the Weber Q-3200.

Shortly after introducing the first Q Portable Grill, Weber noticed that people were not taking them on the road, but were using them as a primary grill. Seeing an opportunity, Weber introduced this monster sized "portable" gas grill. The Q 300 is a 2-burner grill that comes on a fold down cart and is really designed for the person who wants a real grill but needs something smaller than the standard freestanding unit.

Because of the burner design this grill gives you both direct and indirect grilling capabilities can connect to a 20-pound propane tank, if you really wanted to lug around an 83 pound portable, you can take it on the road.

    • A good grill for apartment dwellers
    • Full open gas grilling gets you as closes as possible to real grilling
    • Good design lets you grill directly and indirectly

    • Portable design in an unportable size and weight
    • At well over $300 this is a basic grill with limited feature and function

    • 393 square inch porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate.
    • 21,700 BTUs from two tubular stainless steel burners
    • Push Button piezoelectric ignition
    • Large hood promises to make room for a whole chicken or large roasts
    • Cast Aluminum lid and body
    • Two side work tables
    • Full sized stand included
    • Weighs in at 83 pounds. This includes the grill, stand, hose, and regulator
    • Includes hose and regulator for 20-pound propane tank

    • Made in the USA by the Weber-Stephen Products Company

    Guide Review - Weber Q 300

When Weber introduced the Q portable gas grill they found a lot of people not taking it to the beach but keeping it on their patio. It was a perfect grill for urban dwellers who didn't have a backyard, but still wanted to grill.

In 2006 Weber introduced the Q 300. A larger, two-burner gas grill that comes standard with the previously optional stand. This unit also comes standard with the hose and regulator to hook it to a 20-pound. After all, at 21,700 BTUs it would go through disposable, 1-pound bottles very fast.

While not strictly a portable, this grill is a great compromise between a large full feature grill and a traditional portable, making it perfect for apartment dwellers. The two-burner design gives you indirect cooking abilities. One burner runs around the edges of the grilling area while the other cuts through the middle. This gives the grill the power it needs to heat 393 square inches of cooking area hot enough to grill steaks while giving you a lot more versatility in your grilling.

For the price the construction of this Weber is good. The straightforward design is a model of simplicity and the grill doesn't rely on lots of extras. This is a basic unit grill, perfect for someone who wants to grill small items in a small place.

The Weber Q 300 has a suggested retail price of $449USD but can be typically found for about $100USD less.

prior to Grill Grates I was having a problem with decent searing and sticking. No more. Meat is now nicely searing and with no sticking. An excellent product.

    Disappointed

I made the mistake of not reading all of the specs on this product. i thought I was ordering replacement grill grates. I have grates that I ordered to fit on my Weber 1000 already. The problem with them is it requires you to clean both the cast iron grate that comes with the Weber and the grill grates.

The Weber Q 100 Gas Grill Review Video.

The Weber Q 100 Gas Grill is a compact performer.

The Weber Q 100 gas grill is a popular model within Weber’s “Q” range of grills. Other models, such as the Weber Q120 , Q140 (electric grill) , Weber Q200 , Weber Q220 , Weber Q300 , Weber Q320 grills have more features or are larger than the Weber Q100 Grill, but that does not mean Q100 Weber grill lacks what you need. Indeed, customers all over the world keep buying the Weber Q 100 gas grill because it’s been a great consistent performer. Also, Weber has ensured their reputation for high quality durable components and useful grilling features is maintained and included in the Weber Q100 grill.

The Weber Q100 gas grill is a portable grill, and is capable of cooking delicious food for 1 to 4 people. The cooking area is 189 square inches. The Weber Q100 grill has its own lid, which reflects the high quality finish and heavy duty aluminum components that are present throughout the grill. The Weber Q100 grill weighs approximately 29 lbs, and has overall dimensions of 27 inches wide, by 23.5 high (lid open), by 15.9 inches deep, which means it will comfortably fit in the trunk of your car, is a good size to fit in your compartment in your trailer, or even on the back seat!

The compact and handy Weber Q100 gas grill does not have any side preparation tables. If you are looking for a model which does have this feature, then you may want to take a look at the Weber Q120 gas grill (i.e. the next model up).

Most customers who have purchased the Weber Q 100 gas grill have either had mobility or a smaller living space in mind when they chose this grill. The Weber Q100 grill is great for RV’s, camping, tailgating, and for those with smaller apartment balconies or yards because of its size, compactness and mobility options. This grill can be accompanied by the purchase of the Weber 6507 Rolling Cart – which significantly facilitates moving the grill from place to place, and provides a great stand at a comfortable cooking height so you can avoid having to place the grill on the ground and cook hunched over it! The Weber Rolling cart continues with the compact size features offered by the Weber Q 100 grill, since when it is not in use the cart folds down flat. The Weber rolling cart is lightweight but sturdy, with its wings folding in during storage. It’s worth noting that the stand does not require assembly when it first comes out of the packing box (i.e. no manual for construction needed!). Overall the stand’s portability makes it perfect for tailgating.

You may have come across photos of a more permanent looking grill cart for the Q Weber grills. This is the Weber “stationary” cart , but although it’s not clear on the descriptions you find on Weber’s site, or Amazon, this permanent looking cart is not suitable for the Weber Q models in the 100’s range, i.e. Q100, Q120, Q140, due to the grills’ smaller size (compared to the larger Q200 series of grills for which this cart is intended).

Let’s get ready to grill on the Weber Q 100 gas grill – and fast!

So, you’ve completed your journey to where you want to grill, and you’re ready to start. It’s a good job you have a Weber Q 100 portable gas grill, as you can be ready to grill quickly. The Weber Q100 grill ignites its lp liquid propane gas fuel through the push of a single ignition button that is located on the front of the glass reinforced black grill frame. It’s ok to forget your matches or lighter, as the grill has its own ignition system! Customers report it’s ready for cooking in 10 minutes or under.

The Weber Q100 gas grill is served its liquid propane gas via gas cylinders or tanks. There are 3 size options for you, a 14.1 ounce or 16.1 ounce cylinder, or you can go up to a 20lb tank. If you wish to use a 20lb tank, you will require purchasing the optional extra Weber 6501 Adapter hose . Whichever fuel source you decide that works for you, do note that the gas fuel is not included with your initial purchase of the grill. In addition, if you have selected the Weber Rolling cart stand for your grill and you choose to use a larger 20lb fuel gas tank, the 20 lb cylinder will need to sit on the ground next to the stand (and not on the bottom rack of the cart itself) or else the cylinders weight will damage the cart’s lightweight construction. Customers report that a one pound container of propane gives about 6 or 7 cookouts, although of course this depends on what you are grilling and for how long!

Grill plenty of food on the Go with the Weber Q 100 gas grill…

So now you have your Weber Q100 gas grill all fired up, it’s time to get grilling on the 189 square inches of cooking grate! This porcelain enameled cast iron grate (which helps spreads heat more evenly across it) is enough for 6 to 8 burgers/pieces of chicken, or 1 to 4 guests. The durable material used to construct the grate means that those lovely sear marks on your grilled food come relatively easily. With the cast aluminum lid down, you can obtain a more consistent cooking temperature, and keep those smoky flavors locked inside the grill. This model does not include a temperature thermometer though. If you are looking for a model which does, you may want to consider the Weber Q120 gas grill. Similarly, if you love to grill whole larger pieces of meat, such as a whole chicken, again you may want to consider the same Weber Q120 gas grill, as this model has the highest/deepest lid out of all the current Weber Q grills.

Take control of your grilling with the Weber Baby Q grill.

In terms of the heat generated by the grill, the Weber Q100 has a rating of 8,500 BTU per hour. If you are wondering what a BTU is, you can read more about a BTU here, but essentially 1 BTU is equivalent to one wooden match lit/burning. If you are looking for a higher rated BTU, you may want to consider the 12,000 BTU pr hr of the Weber Q200 gas grill. The heat from the wrap-around Stainless Steel burner is finely controlled by the “infinite control” knob on the side of the grill, which has a smooth feel to it as you turn the dial to increase or decrease the heat. Customers like the wrap around feature of the burner because it provides a more even heat source across the cooking grate.

Grill or Griddle? How about both.

If you like grilling your breakfast, then you should consider the Weber Q 6504 griddle . This is a porcelain enameled cast iron griddle plate that fits on the Weber Baby q, Weber Q 100 and Weber Q120 grills only. The size of the griddle allows you to keep part (about one third) of the grill exposed for normal grilling in parallel to griddling (the griddle sits on top of the grill grates). The griddle corners even have a pouring lip, which allows you to tip away excess cooking juices without losing your food. The Weber Q 6504 griddle is sturdy, and weighs approximately 9 lbs.

    Easy Come, Easy Go

One of the many reasons why the Weber Q100 gas grills are so popular is that the Weber engineers have worked hard to design features that make your grilling experience easier. The Weber Q100 gas portable grill is not short of these conveniences, and beneath the grilling plates you will find a removable catch pan which makes your clean up easy. Customers report that these Weber drip pans do the job well, and also comment that it’s often easier (and usually cheaper) to order extra pans online compared to buying them in store. The drip pans for the Q100 are the Weber 6415 Aluminum Drip Pans and so if you are considering ordering the Q100 grill online, it is recommended you purchase some extra Weber 6415 Aluminum Drip Pans with your Q100 gas grill order. Also the cast aluminum grill body has drip ducts too. To finish off the cleaning process, we would recommend a Weber Grill Brush and Scraper. This tool upholds the Weber reputation of being the right tool for the job. There are 2 options, a 12″ Weber Grill Brush and Scraper , where the overall brush length is 6” smaller than its Weber 18” Grill Brush and Scraper sister. The 12” smaller brush means it does the job while taking up less space in the trunk. Customers report that the brush has lasted them well through the summer of grilling 2 to 3 times a week, with bristles being a suitable length to get in between the grill slats to remove the burnt on food. Some customers have expressed a preference for the extra 6” of the 18” brush scraper, since the extra length means that if you are using the brush while cooking, your hand is not so close to the heat.

    Those useful side tables…..

If you prefer, instead of considering the Weber Q120 (which has fold-out side plastic tables already fitted), you can purchase add on side tables for your Weber Q100, using the Weber 6502 table kit . This kit contains 2 tables which connect to either side of the grill using supplied screws (it takes about 2 mins to connect them) and they fold into the grill for storage purposes (ensure your grill is cool first though!). The tables don’t add significantly to the overall weight of your grill, have hooks for the handy storage of your grilling tools, and each can hold a plate, your bbq sauce, or even your salt and pepper shakers!

Keep your Weber Q 100 grill looking great, and ready to go in an instant.

So now we have eaten our desert, the grill has cooled down and been cleaned, its storage time for your grill. We would recommend considering a tailored Weber 6550 Vinyl grill cover which has been designed specifically to fit the Weber Q100 nice and snug. A cover is very worthwhile investment as it keeps the grill looking great, and means it’s ready to grill at a moment’s notice and will protect your grill from dust.

What’s the difference between the Weber Q100 gas grill and the Weber Q120 gas grill?

The main difference Weber Q100 grill and the Weber Q120 gas grill is the Q120 includes the 2 side fold out tables and has an electronic ignition, and has a taller lid space than then Q100. The Q100 does not include a lid thermometer, but the Q120 gas grill does. Both models have the same 8,500 BTU. The Q120 costs an additional approx $40 compared to the Q100.

What’s the difference between the Weber Q100 gas grill and the Weber Q140 grill?

The Weber Q 100 grill is gas fueled, the Weber Q140 is electric powered (hence the Q140 does not have an ignition button). The Q140 electric grill has stainless steel grates (the Q100 has cast iron). They both have 189 sq inches of cooking space. Neither have a lid thermometer. They both are the same width and height, but the Q140 is just under 5 inches deeper than the Q100 gas grill. The electric Q140 is approx $90 to $100 more expensive than the Q100.

What’s the difference between the Weber Q100 gas grill and the Weber Q200 gas grill?

The Weber Q200 gas grill is bigger than the Weber Q100 grill, both in terms of cooking heat and size. The Weber Q 100 portable grill has a BTU pr hour of 8,500, the Weber Q200 grill has 12,000 per hour. The Weber Q200 gas grill is approximately 3 inches longer, deeper and higher (in all directions) than the Weber Q100. Neither model has a thermometer in its lid, but the Weber Q200 gas grill does include the side tables (the Weber Q100 does not). The Q200 gas grill costs approximately $50 more than the Weber Q100 grill.

What’s the difference between the Weber Q100 gas grill and the Weber Genesis gas grills?

The Weber Genesis range of grills, such as the popular Weber Genesis E320 gas grill, are much larger grills. The Genesis series of barbecues are standing grills that are not designed to be mobile, and have 3 main gas burners. These features compare to the mobility features incorporated into the Weber Q100 grill – such as its compact size and single main gas burner.

Summary of Our Review of the Weber Q100

    Portable Gas Grill:

The Weber Q100 gas grill does prove that great things come in small packages. The Q 100 gas grill is highly portable, lights quickly, has a suitable grilling area to cook for approximately 4 people, and incorporates the quality build and features that Weber grills are renowned for. All of this with great accessories at a very reasonable price, it’s very easy to see why the Weber Q100 gas grill is so popular .
