What is the Weber Smokey Joe Premium?

The Weber Smokey Joe Premium is a portable kettle barbecue with a superb design. Its lid clips in place so you can safely carry it, even when it’s loaded with hot coals. And when the lid’s not in use it doubles as a windshield. Cooking is slow and steady, making it a reliable alternative to cheaper portable bucket and kettle barbecues.

Weber Smokey Joe Premium – Design and Features

The design of the Smokey Joe Premium is superb in many ways. First up are its slender metal legs. These are stable and long enough to lift the fire off the ground or other surface. It’s easy to lean down and tend to a low fire on the ground, but the height also works fine on a tabletop.

Next comes the lid and handle combo. When the lid’s on, you can clip the long, thin body handle over the top into the lid’s small, fat carry handle. This holds the lid in place beautifully. And this means you can carry it safely and easily, even when it’s loaded with hot coals.

When you’re cooking on the barbecue, the thin handle is again useful: it props up the lid for use as a windshield. This unusual feature sets the Smokey Joe Premium apart from cheaper portable kettle barbecues like the Bodum Fyrkat.

The cooking area measures 35cm diameter, generous for a portable barbecue. And the design inside is simple, drawn from Weber’s heritage making kettle barbecues. A grill at the bottom to support the charcoal, a grill at the top to support the food, large adjustable air vents at the sides to control heat, and again large vents in the lid that can be adjusted.

It’s available in four colours: slate grey, spring green, smoke and crimson.

When you first unpack the Smokey Joe Premium, some assembly is required to attach the legs and handles. This takes a good ten minutes but doesn’t require any tools and there’s no need for instructions.

Lighting the barbecue is straightforward but it’s slow to get started compared with more hi-tech barbecue designs. It feels very much like a mini version of a traditional kettle barbecue.

Once the coals have turned white and you’re ready to cook, the Weber comes into its own. It’s a serious barbecue that cooks evenly and reliably.

It’s not particularly fast, but it won’t burn your bangers. We cooked marinaded chicken on it to great effect: the slow, steady heat sealed in flavour and moisture.

Should I buy the Weber Smokey Joe Premium?

Yes. It’s basically a proper, grown-up barbecue in miniature. Great design, including the lockable lid and windshield, sets this apart from more basic portable bucket and kettle barbecues. It’s a superb barbecue for camping and beach barbecues and would double as a fire pit to boot.

Perfect for the campsite or beach as well as the garden, superb design sets this portable kettle barbecue apart from basic bucket BBQs.

Weber Smokey Joe Premium 14

Consider this the 14 1/2-inch version of the iconic Weber Kettle charcoal grill. Yes, this is small, lightweight, and around $50USD, but it does things other little portable charcoal grills don't. This portable actually has temperature control and works very much like a full sized Weber. The Smokey Joe is great for the small balcony, the college student, or a trip to the beach or park.

Take good care of it and it will last you for years. What would make this a great portable charcoal grill would be better airflow control.

Guide Review - Weber Smokey Joe Premium 14

The Weber Smokey Joe Premium 14 is built just like Weber's full sized charcoal grills that have been the bar by which all other charcoal grills are measured.

This little, portable grill has a 14 1/2-inch diameter cooking surface that gives it 147 square inches of grilling space. The body is porcelain coated steel and temperature is regulated by top and side vents. Unlike many other portable charcoal grills, this one offers you temperature control and the ability to snuff out the fire by simply closing the vents.

This portable charcoal grill has been a mainstay for decades and is one of the most popular and widely available little grills on the market. The reason is that this is a very good grill. It does have a few limitations, however. Being small and lightweight it can be knocked over easily so you need to keep it away from foot traffic. Because of the small cooking chamber, the bottom vent can get clogged by ashes and food particles so it does need to be cleaned out well. A bar locks the lid in place so it can be picked up with one hand and so that the lid doesn't come off in the back of your truck or car while driving around.

While I really like the lid locking bar that makes this grill perfectly portable, the intake vents are on the sides of the grill, above the charcoal. This limits airflow and makes it harder for this grill to develop higher temperatures. For this reason, I would recommend saving a couple of bucks and buying the Weber Smokey Joe 14.

How to Grill on a Smokey Joe Premium

For a lot of people, the first Weber grill they own might be one of our Smokey Joe’s. They are a great entry-level grill, they are portable, and their small size makes them perfect for tailgating, camping or for when space is an issue.

Like all Weber charcoal grills, they feature a damper (ventilation) system that helps keep charcoal burning well, and allows the temperature of the grill to be adjusted by changing the damper settings.

Our standard Smokey Joe has dampers on the lid and the bottom of the bowl, which makes it very similar to our full size charcoal models, but the Smokey Joe Premium is a little different. The Smokey Joe Premium features two vents that are on the side of the bowl, rather than on the bottom.

It also does not feature an ash catcher under the grill, which makes the Smokey Joe Premium really well suited for camping, because any ashes or hot cinders are contained inside of the bowl, which means they won’t be blown away if it’s windy. However, because the ashes are kept in the bowl it means that it’s really important to keep up with cleaning them out as needed. This will help maximize airflow inside of the bowl, which in turn will help keep the coals burning well. It also will help keep the bowl in the best shape possible.

If you ever have trouble grilling on a Smokey Joe Premium the best things to do are to make sure that the bowl is clean and free of ashes, and to make sure the side vents and lid damper are fully open. For some other tips on helping a charcoal grill work properly, please check out our blog here.

This Walmart exclusive Weber Charcoal Grill has one big advantage: it's inexpensive. This model is a very simple grill and lacks the bowl depth of the standard Weber Kettle. Of course, at this size (22.5-inch diameter cooking grate for 363 square inches of cooking space) and the low price, this is practically a steal for the person who wants a Weber but doesn't want to spend a lot.

Guide Review - Weber Jumbo Joe Premium 22

For 2014 Weber introduced the Jumbo Joe portable charcoal grill. Built like their popular portable line of charcoal grills, this enlarged version had an 18.5-inch diameter cooking grate. In 2015, an even larger Jumbo became available. This 22.5-inch diameter charcoal grill comes in a full height model with the thinner body, but all the features of their ever popular Original Kettle 22. The important difference is that the bottom half of this grill does not have the depth of their other grills.

This reduces the space between the coals and the cooking grate somewhat limiting the airflow capabilities. While there is no real difference when it comes to direct grilling, indirect grilling and smoke are more limited.

Weber is known for their charcoal grills. The most expensive version of the Weber Kettle has the same cooking space that this one does.

What you get by spending more isn't as much quality as it is more features. The one feature that this lacks is the same level of indirect cooking and smoking performance that the deeper body models have. If that is an important issue then you need to spend the extra money and get a larger grill. If you are only interested in basic grilling, then this model will work fine.
