Weber-Stephen
Weber-Stephen is one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of BBQ equipment and related accessories in the world. Weber grills and smokers cook beautifully and have great features that are clever, effective and easy to use. As popularity and demand for BBQ gear grows worldwide, Weber continues to earn their long standing reputation for quality, durability and outstanding customer service and support, (7 days a week from 7am to 9pm CST), in an increasingly competitive environment. Even in this crowded marketplace, many consumers are still willing to pay more for the Weber name and they are rarely disappointed. They make a variety of cookers and smokers. Their iconic black charcoal kettles are known throughout the world. Indeed Weber is expanding globally.
Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit]* are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.
Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.
The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.
Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.
*At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.
Weber Charcoal Grills
In 2015 Weber changed the names of several popular charcoal grills and added a few new features. Don't worry though, they are still the iconic kettles you grew up with. These classic grills have played a big part in BBQ history and helped spread the joy of outdoor cooking across America and beyond. The 22.5" kettle is by far the most popular backyard grill in the world for under a hundred dollars. The body and lid are pressed from solid sheets of steel so there are no welds to rust, and coated with a durable powder coated baked on porcelain enamel that lasts for decades. The lower intake vents double as an ash collection system and the three legs with two wheels make rolling it around a snap. It is lightweight, there are few parts, and simplicity reigns. The lids fit tightly so oxygen control, and therefore heat control, is very good. And, with the exception of the Ranch Kettle, they are inexpensive.
AmazingRibs.com science advisor, Dr. Greg Blonder, observes, "Most people believe the Weber is a parabolic reflector, focusing heat emitted by the coals directly on the grill. A parabolic reflector is only effective when the heat source is tiny, intense and located at the focal point. This is not true in the case of the Weber, where the heat source is a sheet of coals spread over a large area. On the other hand, the Weber gets many things right. While the parabola won't create a beam of infra-red energy, the high almost vertical side walls reflect the infra-red image of the coals from side to side- like images of your head pinging back and forth between two mirrors at the barbershop. So this 'reflection gallery effect' does increase the heat intensity a bit compared to cooking over an open pit, where heat emitted to the sides is lost. The system is efficient, burning a minimum number of briquets during cooking." Probably no other single invention has influenced the American diet more since the invention of the electric refrigerator.
Weber Charcoal Grills are offered in four basic configurations: the small, portable Smokey Joe Series, the larger One-Touch kettles on three legs, the Performer Series mounted on carts and the oversize Ranch Kettle. They also offer three models of the popular Weber Smokey Mountain smokers. In 2016 they introduced Weber Summit Charcoal Grills, multifunction cookers that are effective smokers and grills under one hood.
Weber Performer Series
When George Stephen introduced his simple and elegant Charcoal Kettle Grill design, mankind took a step up in the evolutionary process. Meathead wrote an excellent article commemorating the Anniversary of the Weber Kettle for the Huffington Post where he observed, "the innovation that made grilling and cooking outdoors the great American pastime came in 1951 when George Stephen, Sr., frustrated by his inability to control the heat in his backyard grill, had the welders at the Weber Brothers Metal Works, where he worked, cut up a buoy that was to be used for Lake Michigan boating. The Weber Kettle was born and introduced in 1952. Among its innovations was a tight-fitting lid and adjustable air vents that allowed the cook to control temperature. Today's design is not far from the original and it is by far the most popular backyard grill in the world".
The Performer Series mounts a classic, 22.5" Weber Kettle on a cart instead of three legs. In 2015 Weber made some changes to their line of classic charcoal kettles. Weber's Gourmet Barbecue System, a hinged grate with removable center that accepts inserts like woks and pizza stones, became standard for all Performers.
Gold Medal
Weber's Performer Deluxe 22" Charcoal Grill is a feature rich version of the basic Original Kettle 22" on a cart. The new 2015 Performers come standard with Weber's Gourmet BBQ Cooking System which had been available only as an option. The system consists of Weber's plated steel 22.5" grate with hinged sides for replenishing coal and a removable round center grate that let's grillers insert optional cook surfaces like a Wok, Griddle or Pizza Stone. A removable curved warming rack is also available.The cart has two large wheels, two locking casters and a large work surface with built-in tool hooks and a removable LCD cook timer. It also has Weber's Touch-N-Go gas ignition that lets you light charcoal with a small burner under the coal grate, fueled from a one pound propane tank. A charcoal storage bin is located under the work surface. The new Performer Deluxe comes with two char-baskets to hold and easily move charcoal under the grate to create hot direct and cooler indirect zones. Another new feature is the redesigned nylon lid handle that adds a protective heat shield between your fingers and the lid. Check out these new features in the video below.
A tuck away lid holder cradles the lid off to the side while you tend the feast. Performers have an enclosed receptacle attached to the bottom to capture and hold ash so it cannot blow around. It comes off quickly for easy disposal of ash. Although the name changed from Performer Platinum 22.5" to Performer Deluxe 22" , Weber specs declare the grate is still 22.5" diameter with the same 363 square inch capacity. The obligatory lid thermometer is thrown in to sweeten the deal, but these antique heat indicators are inaccurate. Do yourself a favor and pick up a digital thermometer. You'll see an immediate improvement in your grilling.
Weber Kettles enjoy evergreen popularity from one generation to the next because they are durable and you can cook just about anything you want on them. Pile up coal on one side to sear steaks or set up 2-zone roasting, Build a nice even bed of coal for general cooking. Add a Slow 'N Sear and make great smoked ribs and brisket. Another useful accessory is the Smoke EZ Grill Conversion Kit, which not only turns your kettle into a smoker, but increases capacity as well. The tight seal between the lid and body makes the dampers very effective and provides excellent heat control.

Let's debunk a myth: The parabolic shape of the Weber Kettle is not a more efficient heat reflector than other shapes. By far the vast majority of the heat is radiated directly from the surface of the glowing coals with some more reflected from the sides. Very little heat is being reflected off the curved bottom of the bowl. There is a solid barrier in the way: The bed of coals. Any heat that hits the bottom of the kettle just bounces back into the coal pile. So the parabolic shape of the kettle is no more efficient than a square box.

45 Day No Hassle Returns
We want you to love what you buy! But if you don’t, we offer a simple “No Hassle Returns” policy. We allow you to return all new, unused, unassembled, and resalable items in their original packaging within 45 days of delivery for a refund (minus the original and return shipping costs incurred by BBQGuys.com). Naturally, if your return is because of our error, you are not responsible for any shipping costs.
- If your return request is due to product defect or damage, we will first work with you to get the product repaired. If repair is not possible, then we’ll work with you to get it replaced.
- If your return will be coming back via freight truck, we will require you to provide us a photo before your return will be authorized. This can be as simple as a cell phone pic! We just need a “before” picture in case there is any damage to the item on its way back to us.
- To expedite the returns process, before shipping the item(s) back, make sure they are clean, the packaging is sufficient to prevent damage, and (if necessary) you note all defects along with the photos taken.
Important information about refund eligibility:
To be eligible for a “No Hassle Return,” items must be returned within 45 days of delivery in “Like New” condition. “Like New” condition is when a returned item is unused, unassembled, and has been returned in the original packaging.
- Full refunds do not apply to certain items, including clearance items, gift cards, gift certificates, items that have been personalized, and items clearly marked as “non-returnable,” such as products sold as “Warehouse Deals.”
- The costs of return shipping are deducted from your refund or merchandise credit.
- In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item has been inspected by us in our warehouse.
- Refunds must be applied to the same credit card, debit card, or other form of payment used in the original transaction.
- In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item is inspected upon return delivery.
- BBQGuys.com reserves the right to refuse a refund on a returned item if:
- The item that has been returned does not match the original item shipped to the customer.
- The returned item is missing parts or the original product’s packaging.
- The item was damaged during the return shipment due to improper or insufficient packaging.
- The item being returned has been obviously heavily used (such as significant charcoal buildup inside a grill).
- The item has been assembled in a way that would impede proper packaging for return shipping.
In exchange situations, there are TWO options:
- If you need the product right away, you can purchase a replacement on a new order to get it shipped out as soon as possible. Then return the original item and we’ll refund you for the original once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition.
- If you can wait a little longer, return the original item and once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition, we’ll refund you for that purchase, then have you purchase the replacement on a new order and we’ll ship the replacement as soon as possible.
Custom made-to-order/special order items are made to your specifications. Due to the custom nature of made-to-order/special order items, all sales are final. Made-to-order/special order items defective due to manufacturing will be repaired/replaced as long as the claim is made within the warranty period offered by the manufacturer. Custom pieces damaged in shipping will still follow all steps for a freight claim as previously listed here. All Custom pieces will be repaired or replaced with an item of the same nature as previously ordered. You will not be allowed to order an item that differs from the damaged or defective item.

Weber Performer History
Early Days 
Red Imperial Sequoia 1
Blue Seville Chariot – Side 3
By 1968, Weber introduced two new models with an integrated table and wheels; the Seville and the Imperial Sequoia. Both models used the popular 22.5 inch kettle integrated into a purpose-built cart. The Seville was made of iron and the Sequoia was built with wood to complement the styles of America’s patio furniture at the time. Both models offered space next to the grill for staging, storage for tools, and wheels to facilitate easy movement of the grills. The seeds of what would become the Performer model were now planted.
Transition Kettle – The earliest Performer-style kettle was not a charcoal kettle at all! In the mid 80’s, Weber produced this kettle which had gas burners, but retained the classic Weber kettle shape. Weber model 61101 featured a kettle that was integrated into a cart. The cart provided workspace on either side of the kettle and the bowl of the kettle is mounted to the frame with two tabs permanently attached to the kettle bowl. This design feature would carry over into subsequent generations of Performers. Not shown in the photo is the 5 gallon propane tank that hung from the right side of the cart. The 1986 issue of Consumer Reports rated the Weber 61101 as “Not Acceptable” due to dangers associated with ignition failure and subsequent propane build up leading to possible “flash of flame” and further warned current owners to remove the ignitor and only light the burner with a long match.
Four Patents, One Kettle – The first model of the Weber Charcoal Performer was introduced in 1990. To fully understand its beginnings, it is necessary to get some background on the company’s patent applications at the time. The Performer is the result of three patent applications filed in August, 1990 which combined, formed the fourth patent which became the essence of the new model. Some Weber patent background:

The Generations of Weber’s Performer

Gen 1 –The first Performer, introduced in 1990, is often referred to as the stainless steel or “SS” Performer. The top surfaces surrounding the kettle and the adjacent “flip up” horizontal surface were made of stainless steel. The early SS models came in two basic variants; a gas-assist version that had the propane tank and burner tube for lighting charcoal, and a non gas-assist model that eliminated these features. Interestingly, the gas-assist version had wheels on the left legs of the cart and castors on the right legs while the non-gas assist model only had wheels on the left legs. Its right legs were longer and did not include the castors. Both versions had a plastic charcoal bin underneath the table for storing fuel and a wire storage area at the bottom of the cart for miscellaneous storage. The SS performers came with 3 metal clips that attached to the top rail for hanging grill brushes, spatulas, and other grilling tools. Like the Master Touch models of the same era, the SS performer had an integrated, removable thermometer located in the lid handle. Colors offered in Gen 1 include Black, Red, Red Mist, Dark Green, Dark Blue, Plum, and Grey.
Gen 2 Performer
Gen 2 – 2005 The first revision of the Weber Performer happened a full 15 years after the SS Performer was introduced. One of the biggest improvements was to raise the height of the grill and the table by a few inches to make it more comfortable to use. While improving functionality, Weber was clearly looking to reduce its costs associated with this model as well. Square steel stock for the frame was replaced by lighter gauge metal tubing, the 5 gallon propane tank was replaced by fittings that allowed for disposable propane canisters, and the stainless steel top was replaced by a fiberglass reinforced plastic table. The new table was bolted to the frame and no longer contained the “flip up” feature of the previous Performer. Consequently, the design for the plastic charcoal bin was changed to a “tip out” design. The grill tool hooks were now integrated into the cart, the ash bucket was now black, and the wheel design was changed. Colors offered in Gen 2 include Black, Dark Green, Grass Green (Crate and Barrel offering), Dark Blue, Sage, and Grey.
Gen 3 performer
Gen 3 – 2010 The third generation of the Performer incorporated minor changes to Gen 2. The thermometer used to measure kettle temperature was removed from the handle and integrated into the lid of the kettle. Other changes were primarily cosmetic; the grill tool hooks were no longer recessed, the wheel style was changed to full “hubcaps” with the Weber logo, the ash bucket and frame tubing were changed back to silver, and the bottom rack was redesigned to include an arch. For 2014, electronic ignition started to appear in the igniter assembly. Colors for Gen 3 include Black, Dark Green, Grass Green (Crate and Barrel offering), Dark Blue, Red Brick, Crimson, and Copper (2014 only).
Gen 4 Performer
Gen 4 – 2015 (Performer deluxe) With the fourth generation of the Performer, it is clear that Weber has been listening to the feedback of its customers and using that input to provide significant improvements in this model’s design. The plastic table of the Gen 2 and Gen 3 Performer was replaced with a hammer tone metal unit, increasing durability and more importantly, providing a much easier surface to keep clean. The lid bale clearance was increased by 2″ to provide much better access to the grill while the lid is stored. In a move that has certainly created controversy across the WKC, Weber replaced the integrated kettle lid handle with a bolt on unit that sits higher and contains a heat shield. The ash bucket is a new design with a tapered bottom and a squeeze handle to facilitate easier removal and replacement while dumping ashes. Behind the grey door in the frame is a removable cook timer and the ignition knob for the gas assist feature. The ignition is now an electronic unit that enables multiple, rapid fire sparks for better ignition. Colors for Gen 4 include Black, Dark Green, Copper, Crimson (Ace Hardware offering), and Dark Blue (Crate and Barrel offering).
The Weber Performer, with its integrated table, gas assist, and charcoal storage, is an excellent example of a design that provides all the capabilities of a Weber charcoal kettle with additional features to make grilling a true pleasure. The Performer has always been priced at the top of Weber’s kettle lineup and is considered a premium model. Though the years, this model has evolved and continues to improve, with the 2015 Gen 4 considered by many to be the best Performer ever.

INSECT ALERT Your Performer Grill, as well as any outdoor gas appliance, is a target for spiders and insects. They can nest in the venturi section (1) of the burner tube causing gas to flow back out of the air shutter. This could result in a fire in and around the burner tube under the bowl panel.
PERIODIC QUICK CLEANING We recommend that you periodically brush the outside of the burner slots with a brass wire brush and clean the burner tube through the combustion air vent with the tool we have provided. This can be done by locating the burner combustion air vent (1) underneath the bowl bracket and inserting the tool through each combustion air vent, rotating the tool.
