The Virtual Weber Gas Grill

Deciphering Serial Numbers On Old Weber Gas Grills

Sometimes one of the challenges to restoring an old Weber gas grill is just being able to identify which model of grill you’ve got.

A couple of months ago, I posted some information on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board about deciphering old Weber gas grill serial numbers. It comes from Dave Weaver, a TVWBB member with inside information on how the older grills were serialized.

Weber Gas Grill Restoration Resources

I’ve featured several examples of vintage Weber gas grill restoration projects in blog posts here, but if you’re looking to do your own restoration project, make sure to check-out the resources available in the Weber Gas Grill forum at TVWBB.com.

Genesis Platinum Series II Restoration by Jeff MA

This 1996 Genesis Platinum Series II restoration by TVWBB member Jeff MA of Fitchburg, MA is one of the finest, most comprehensive restorations you’ll ever see of a Weber gas grill.

It features almost everything you might encounter in a restore project, including frame repair, firebox cleanup, screw hole repair with QuikSteel, a little welding, repainting, polishing, parts replacement, logo emblem refinishing, new propane tank scale and hose connector, plus a brand new side burner for good measure.

Cleaning & Lubricating Weber Gas Grill Valves

Are the gas grill valves in your old Weber Genesis or Summit grill stiff and hard to turn? Do they no longer lock in the Off/High/Medium/Low positions? Do they not pop back up after being pushed down?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you can probably solve the problem by cleaning and lubricating the gas valves.

Genesis Platinum C Cleanup & Repair by Scott P

To the untrained eye, this circa 2005 Weber Genesis Platinum C gas grill looks like a piece of junk, ready for the scrap heap. But Scott P. from Porter, TX knew better. He picked it up on Craigslist for $50, gave it some spit and polish, and it’s ready for many more years of grilling.

Genesis Platinum C as purchased by Scott P. Rusted floor pan in storage enclosure

Scott gave the grill a thorough cleaning inside and out, then removed the storage enclosure and did some repair to the floor pan using a rust converter, bonding primer, and graphite spray paint.

Genesis Platinum C post-rehab

A little more polishing of the stainless steel and gray painted surfaces and this gasser was ready for action!

“The burners all work well. It got up to 500°F in about 6 minutes and 600°F a bit later,” says Scott. “I could have spent more time sanding and grinding to smooth out the rust and old paint, but I was looking to do this quick.”

What Scott calls “quick” I call “looks great”!

You can read more about this Weber Genesis Platinum C clean-up and repair on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board.

Repair Rusted Screw Holes With QuikSteel

It’s not uncommon to encounter a rusted-out screw hole when restoring an old Weber gas grill. How do you repair a rusted-out screw hole? In some cases, it’s easy enough to clean-out whatever remains of the hole and replace the original screw with a bolt and nut. But in some cases, you’ll want (or need) to repair the screw hole so the original screw can be used again.

Genesis 2 Restoration by EdW

Here’s a beautiful restoration of a Weber Genesis 2 by EdW from Silver Spring, MD. He’s documented the process in a series of posts on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board.

Genesis 2 after & before restoration

The restoration included a complete disassembly of the grill, repair of the rusted frame, replacements of many internal parts, repainting of the frame/firebox/lid end caps, and some beautiful new woodwork on the work surfaces.

Area of rust cut-off and rewelded Replacement piece welded into frame Repainting firebox Replacing burner tubes

Genesis Silver B Restoration by THyde

THyde from Bethlehem, PA has documented his impressive restoration of this burgundy Genesis Silver B in a series of posts on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board.

Weber Genesis Silver B before restoration

The cooking grates had been recently replaced by the previous owner and the Flavorizer bars were in pretty good shape, but there were plenty of issues with broken bolts and rust on the frame that needed to be addressed.

Rust on the frame

THyde also replaced the burners, ignition system, and control knobs. And of course, there was lots of cleaning and cosmetic work to be done to make this beauty shine like new again.

Genesis 1100 Redhead Restoration by KellyMc

TVWBB member KellyMc from Austin, Texas picked up this 1998 Weber Genesis 1100 redhead on Craigslist for just $45.

“I spent about $160 on paint, wood and finishes, warming basket and shelf, catch pan and holder, cover and a propane tank,” says Kelly. “I’ve used it half a dozen times already and it works great. I like it so much better than something new that would have cost twice as much or would have been half as well-made.”

Weber Genesis 1100 redhead before restoration Weber Genesis 1100 redhead after restoration

What really stands out about Kelly’s restoration is the woodwork. “I used cedar from Home Depot — 1x2s for the side shelf and just plain fence pickets for the bottom shelf. The handle is the original wood, which seems like very cheap pine, with the gray paint sanded off.

“I sanded everything thoroughly and did 3 or 4 coats of teak oil. Then I sanded again and topped with spray-on spar varnish. I think I did 2 or 3 coats, sanding between each. It looks quite nice and seems plenty water-resistant. I keep it completely covered between uses, so I’m hoping it stays looking great for a long time.”

You can read more about this restoration, with lots of photos, on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board.

Genesis Silver C Restoration by Mary Teal

TVWBB member Mary Teal from Eugene, Oregon rescued this 2001 Weber Genesis Silver C from the back of a trailer headed to the scrap yard. With advice from forum members and a batch of Weber OEM parts, she brought this beauty back to life. She calls it “Ol’ Blue Belle”.

You can read more about this restoration on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board.

Weber Genesis Silver B Gas Grill - Weber Genesis B

2005 Weber Genesis Silver B Gas Grill - Black

I just bought the Weber Genesis B Gas Grill (as shown above) and cannot give it a higher rating! The Weber Genesis B Gas Grill is fantastic - great quality, cooks wonderfully, is easy to assemble and clean, can be put together in less than 10 minutes, and offers 611 square inches of cooking area - all with the Weber brand name and quality.

Weber Genesis B Specs from Weber

• 36,000 BTU-per-hour output

• 611 (sq. in.) Total cooking area

• 3 Stainless Steel Burners

• Dual-purpose thermometer on outside lid

• Porcelain-enamel cooking grates

• Crossover Ignition System

• Enclosed cart w/stainless steel doors and handles

• Thermoset swing-up work surface (great for vegetables)

Weber Q-140 Electric Grill - Discontinued

This model has been discontinued. It has been replaced by the Weber Q 1400.

When exiled to a place where charcoal and gas are forbidden, the griller doesn't have a lot of options other than electricity. The problem is that 120 volts isn't a lot of power to do high-temperature grilling. Well, after some considerable development time Weber has managed to produce an electric version of its popular Q line of grills that runs on electricity.

Capable of temperatures over 600 degrees F thanks to the efficiency of this design this grill can sear a steak, heat up quickly and recover its heat even faster after you lift the lid. While a small grill, if you are limited to electric grills, buy this one.

  • High-temperature output from a 120-volt electric grill
  • Stainless steel cooking grates produce real grill marks
  • Closed and insulated design reduces reheat time after lifting the lid

  • 189 square inch stainless steel cooking grate
  • 1560 watt electric heating element
  • Cast aluminum body and lid
  • Aluminum heat retention liner holds in heat and reduces preheat time
  • Weighs about 30 pounds
  • Removable drip pan

Guide Review - Weber Q-140 Electric Grill

The Weber Q grills have become very popular since they were introduced a few years ago. These portable grills range from the small Q 100 to the nearly full-sized Q 300.

The combination of simply design with efficient heat output makes these grills powerful and small. Now Weber has introduced an electric version of the Q grill for those of you confined to locations where gas or charcoal grills are not allowed. The reason it to so long was solving the problem of low heat output from electric grills because of the limits of 120 volt power.

If typically takes a lot of wattage to get a lot of heat, but Weber has managed to design a grill that can hit temperatures over 600 degrees F.

What makes this grill work is the sealed, aluminum insulated design that holds all the heat in and reflects the heat inside at the food you are cooking. Add the heavy stainless steel cooking grate and you get great contact heat to produce good sear marks on your food.

The two issues that stand out about this grill is the small size and the price. This grill is small because of the heat issue. You can only draw so much wattage so making a larger electric grill is pretty much impossible. This grill is large enough to cook a pair of steaks and maybe four hamburger patties, but that's about it. If you need more food you are going to have to cook in shifts.

With a list price of $279 (but can typically be found for around $230) this isn't a cheap grill (in either sense of the word). Of course if you are limited to electric then this is the best grill out there to choose from.

Weber Genesis Silver B Gas Grill

The Home Depot website has the Weber Genesis Silver B Gas Grill for $349. That is a $100 dollar savings off of their regular price of $449. From what I have read, it seems to be a great grill. Why the discount? Maybe it’s last year’s model. The jpg shown on Home Depot’s website doesn’t have the stainless steel cover on the lower storage area where the Weber website does. Anyway you look at it, it’s a good deal.

You made some good points there. I looked on the internet for the topic and found most individuals will approve with your blog.

The weber genesis grill simply a great grill. I bought it and used it with direct gas from my home, then moved and found it was easily convertible to propane, minor part changes needed. It’s about 10 years old now and going strong!!

Good reviews. I brought Weber e320 for 2months ago.its perfect ! i think it very useful for cooking with my nightbor

i still prefer gas grills over electric grills because the smoke somehow improves the flavor of the meat**.

I love my weber, 10 years old now and just like new.

only thing better is cooking over an open fire

Speaking from experience the weber genesis range is of great quality, you can’t go wrong with it.

Hi, I run a weber gas grills site and stumbled across your blog. I was going to do some research to see why the discount was run, but I realized it was a few year back! Funny thing, the Weber genesis is still one of the most popular Webers next to the kettle grills. Great blog by the way 🙂

I went to Home Depot to buy the Weber Genesis Silver B last night and it was still full price. The salesman said that the $100 discount was only good online.

I’ve found that most retail stores will still honor a lower online price, but the salesman told me that Home Depot regularly has online-only sales.

Lesson: Before buying big ticket items at Home Depot, check the price online. You may find a deal.

In addition to a weather-proof handle with protective heat shield the Weber® Performer® Deluxe lid also contains an integrated thermometer and a rust-proof aluminium vent to control temperature and air flow for perfect barbecuing.

Set deep into the cart, the bowl of the Performer® Deluxe is fitted with a Tuck-Away lid holder which acts as both a convenient rack to retain the lid as you tend to your food and a handy windbreak. At the base of the bowl Weber® include the advanced stainless steel One-Touch® cleaning system and removable ash catcher to make cleaning and maintenance of the kettle even easier and more effective.

Simply by sliding the lever protruding from the One-Touch® cleaning system three angled blades attached internally to the base of the kettle rotate to ‘sweep’ the ash through the drainage holes into the rust-proof removable ash catching bucket saving time and preventing mess.

Internally, the 57cm kettle comes with a genius stainless steel Gourmet BBQ System® grate as standard which has a removable 30cm centrepiece to allow you to attach a number of compatible accessories including a Dutch Oven, wok, pizza stone and griddle (all sold separately) offering you no end of cooking possibilities.

Underneath the work surface is a convenient weatherproof CharBin for quick and hygienic disposal of waste material to prevent litter falling onto the ground or blowing around the garden.

For ease of portability the Performer® Deluxe has two logoed all-weather wheels under the kettle and two locking castors at the opposite end under the CharBin. A full-length stainless steel wire shelf just above the wheels adds extra rigidity to the unit as well as offering good storage space for food, charcoal and accessories.

Fantastic BBQ - easy to assemble, easy to use and food cooked on it tastes great. The table area is a good size and is really useful for keeping food, marinades etc close by when cooking. I also like the bin for easy storage of briquettes/charcoal as it keeps everything you need in one place. The gas lighter is a massive help - it means igniting the coals is incredibly simple and you really can be ready to cook within 20 to 30 minutes. I would defintiely reccommend this to any barbecue - the only downside is once purchased you will no doubt want all the GBS accessories which dont come cheap!!

best bbq in the world ! fast shipping! thanks!

Great BBQ easy to assemble. Going to play with it tonight. The only down side in my opinion is that it didn't come with a gas bottle. As one of the main features I would have expected one with the BBQ hence only four stars. Well its now October and a nice touch was the free cover so blowing a gale and raining the BBQ will be getting a good bit of use before the summer. Remember folks a BBQ is just not for summer its for all the year round. The cast iron grate that is included is a great bit of kit nice and heavy should hold the heat for a long time. To improve on the Performer I would ask Weber to try and get an I Grill or the like to fit in the place of the timer that comes with the grill. I would rather know the temp of the food rather than how long its been in. As I said GREAT bit of kit bit bigger than it looks in the photos, now sitting along side me Traeger. Decisions, decisions.

I had a previous Weber Barbeque and this latest model is a leap forward in not only build quality but the labour saving gas ignition works perfectly. I used a Weber chimney on my older model. I look forward to another 12 years of happy barbequing.

Well worths the money, that's the best comment that I could make.

Having used it now for a couple of weeks I can honestly say this is an amazing barbecue to use, I'm now totally hooked on Weber and will definitely be buying some of the accessories for it.

Very good quality, good for grilling smoking and slow cooking would recommend this product

One of the best purchases iv ever bought, and iv bought a lot of things in my life! Had BBQ's 7 nights in one week as its the most convenient charcoal BBQ around. I dont like gas BBQ's as you dont get the same flavour, Look no further for the easiest charcoal BBQ on the market

One of the best barbecue out there without a doubt

Having tried out this product, I can recommend it. My husband now cooks the food perfectly. It is a bit on the expensive side though.

I did lots of research before buying this BBQ and could find no match for it. Its more than three times than I have paid for a BBQ before so had high expectations. I was attracted by the gas start feature and that built in surface for preparing the meats. It arrived very quickly from Riverside Garden Centre and the accessories I ordered had been put inside the main BBQ box. I decided to buy a Weber propane/butane canister and a BBQ glove, but most importantly I bought the specific cover to protect my purchase from the elements outside. I set aside a couple of hours to assemble the BBQ and it took me around 1hr 40mins to build on my own. You will need some basic tools to put it together, a Philips screwdriver, a hammer, some pipe grips and a block of wood. The assembly is straightforward and the components are made to a high quality which meant no messing around. By the time I had done the main frame, my wife had already commented that it looked to be sturdier than any BBQ I had owned before. Once complete the BBQ really did look the part on my patio, and I was looking forward to getting to use it. I managed to fire her up last night and have to say it is by far the easiest charcoal BBQ I have ever seen and must rival the gas equivalent for time to cook and ease of clean up afterwards. I went from cold to ready to cook in 20 minutes. The kettle design by Weber makes controlling the cook very straightforward the food had all the nice grill marks with no excessive burning whatsoever. All the food was properly cooked yet retained its moisture and tasted great. Once cooking was complete, the vents are closed and due to the lack of oxygen the charcoal soon cools down and it was ready for the cover to go back on around 45 minutes later. The unused charcoal can be lit next time and used as a starter fuel so it doesn't get wasted, and any ash is collected in the built in ash cannister underneath, ready to empty when it gets full. I'm not sure charcoal cooking could get any easier, and the service from Riverside was fast and exact.

    2015 Weber Performer Deluxe Review

Oct 10, 2014 – Weber Kettle Club Co-Founder Brian was able to get his hands on the very first 2015 Weber Performer Deluxe. This new model is not even available yet, and this particular grill is partially a prototype. It has all the new features but it still has the older style wheels. Public information about this grill is very limited – so Brian has written a thorough review to reveal the details of the new features.

The first thing you’ll notice, besides the new copper color, is the dark hammertone side table. It is made of metal instead of glass reinforced nylon. Apparently Weber has been listening and is answering our prayers.

The table is .070″ steel with a lot of shape to it on the edges – making it very sturdy and solid feeling.

The new metal table even has a reinforcement bar on the underside for extra support and stability.

Another exciting new feature is the extended lid bale which allows the lid to open farther back. Again another feature a lot of people have been asking for. The lid bale is twice as far from the kettle as it is used to be. It was two inches, now it’s four. I really like this new feature. I think it gives a little more elbow room. Kudos to Weber for this.

The original lid bale: 2 inches of space

2015 Weber Performer: 4 inches of space

Here is a comparison between the new and old open lid angles, you can clearly see how far the new lid opens up

The old lid bail only opens to 70 degree angle, while the 2015 Performer Deluxe is nearly 90 degrees.

This model has the cook timer, it’s removable so you can go back in the house and see if the Hawks are beating up on the rest of the NHL and you won’t forget to flip the dogs after a few minutes.

Underneath the timer is the gas assist control and igniter. The igniter is different from the older Piezo ones. The older ones push real hard and create a single spark when the button is pushed. CLUNK! The new igniter is the electronic type like a gas grill. It clicks real fast, making a series of rapid-fire sparks. It seems to work very well.

The ash bucket has a new look for 2015. It has a flange that kicks out on the bottom, so it makes it real easy to re-seat the ash bucket after you dump out the ashes. As you can see there is a nice new little logo telling you to dump the ashes in the trash, just in case you didn’t know what to do. The ash can is now removed by squeezing the handle instead of twisting and lowering.

A few other things I noticed about the 2015 Weber Performer Deluxe

It still has the hook on the back for the grill grate to hang on.

The old table and the new table are the same size and bolt pattern. I tested with another Performer I just happened to have nearby.

Overall this is really a stellar grill. I think this is really the best Performer Weber has ever made. I felt the old Performer was a fantastic grill and this new model has greatly improved on that classic.

Oh and in case you needed to know…..my wood handles fit on it just fine….

And in case you want a more classic look you can leave the heat shield off….

The 2015 Weber Performer is available for pre-order right now on Amazon!

    Brian you lucky devil.

FYI, electronic ignition isn’t new for Performers. I can’t however recall if last year was the first or if it appeared prior to 2014.

The “Euro” heat shield for the lid handle is a good idea for the miserable “yet stylish” plastic handles Weber still provides. ProTip: If you lack Brian’s handle, wear an insulated glove.

New lid bale and metal table: good ideas.

New ashcan and ashcan support: better ideas. Seems like there will be less hunting for the slots.

One-Touch sweep: I get why the sweep continues to be redundantly broad (to help sweep ash around …) but for the purposes of air intake control (which I think Weber could do a better job of educating its customers about) the levers handle’s travel is waaaay too long, given how narrow the intake vents are.

Bottom line: I’m gratified Weber continues to make evolutionary, not “revolutionary” changes their products.

Will the new lid bail be available separately? I have a brand new blue 22″ OTG that I would love to mod. Like the Guys in the UK have, a common sense lid holder.

Great review! Also, it’s easy to tell that it’s a fairly recent review because there were no Hawks fans before 2010. 😉

This is a great review – thanks! Love your site!! We just saw Crate & Barrel has this in blue this year. Based on your review (and a few others) we are definitely going to purchase.

I don’t know how they did it but my wife, my son, and my daughter found me a 2015 Weber Deluxe in BLUE! In November my wife and I bought our NAVY son a Crimson Deluxe and that was a nightmare trying to find one, getting the order canceled three times, etc. I started out looking for a 2014 Performer Platinum in blue as I had seen them online – but no go. No one had one. The blue was discontinued in 2012 someone told me. But somehow, in Feb on my birthday, I got a 2015 Blue Deluxe!

Awesome review. Great pics and I love how you compared and contrasted this model to last year’s model. Very informative. One question…..what size propane canister does this grill use?

Hi Dino, the modern performers use the widely available 16.4 oz disposable propane bottles that are typically used for camp stoves and lanterns. You can also use propane torch bottles. The old performers (pre 2004) used a refillable 5lb tank.

I forgot to ask…..how long do those 16.4 ounce propane tanks last and what is the approximate cost per tank? Is there any way to hook up an adapter to be able to use a 5lb. tank?

Thanks for all the great information!

Has anyone modified the lid bail on the Preformer Platinum to allow the lid to rest straight up?

This is a question. I’m a gas guy, but im thinking of making the swith to charcoal. other than the obvious amenities (lid bail, electric starter, etc.) what makes this grill worth the extra money over a traditional weber charcoal grill?

Do you know if you can purchase a 2015 lid bail anywhere to install on a 2014 performer? I e mailed weber, and they said it voids the warranty (which I don’t understand why), i’m guessing someone will create one?

    INOX-Grillsystem

Friedrich Schmerold aus Neukirchen a. d.
