Weber Rolls Out New Genesis II Gas Grills

Consumer Reports has tested the eight grills in the new line

Weber revamped its iconic Genesis grill line this year, rolling out eight new grills that step up in size, features, and price, from two-burner to six-burner. They range in price from $500 to $2,000. To see whether the upgrades are indeed improvements, Consumer Reports bought all of these grills for testing.

    • The first thing you’ll notice is that the Weber Genesis II grills aren’t as blocky as their predecessors: They have rounder hoods and a more streamlined appearance.

    • The propane tank has been relocated to the right side of the grill, making it easier to change, and two of the four casters have been replaced by wheels.

    • Under the hood and beneath the grates, the burners ports are bigger and rounder, replacing the old slits, and the burners are tapered. Weber says the tapered shape ensures that the heat is evenly distributed across the cooking surface. Our tests found that it is. (Note that the first number in each model name below indicates the number of burners that grill has.)

Priced between Weber’s lower-priced Spirit line and its high-end Summit grills, Genesis II comes in two series: the E line and the spiffed-up LX. We were disappointed to see that the back panels on the higher-end Genesis II LX cabinets are attached with plastic fasteners instead of metal bolts—a corner-cutting measure at these prices. Some of the fasteners on the grills we bought broke during shipping or came out in our grilling lab.

Nuts and bolts aside, how do the new grills grill? All eight scored a very good overall in our tests, and one scored high enough to make our recommended list. We can't speak to the reliability of the Genesis II grills just yet, because they're new to the market. But Weber has been a solid brand, according to our reader survey of nearly 16,000 grill owners.

(Some of these grills are available in liquid-propane and natural-gas versions; some also come in stainless steel or a porcelain-enamel finish.)

All of the grills in the Genesis II E series have an open cart, a porcelain-enameled lid, and porcelain-coated cast-iron grates. Each has an electronic igniter, a fuel guage, a side table, and a 10-year burner warranty.

For $200 more, you get a third burner and a larger cooking area, bumping the Weber Genesis II E-310, $700, into our midsized category. Grills in this group can fit 18 to 28 burgers. Performance was similar to the E-210, and indirect cooking was even better.

Stepping up to the Weber Genesis II E-410, $900, grill gives you four burners and a choice of four colors—crimson (shown), copper, black, or smoke. The cooking surface can fit 28 burgers or more, putting it into our large grill group. Of all the E-series models we tested, the E-410 delivered the best heating evenness, which means no matter where you place the food, the cooking temperature is the same. That's important if you want to grill a batch of burgers and serve them all at once.

At $1,300, the six-burner Weber Genesis II E-610 grill has the largest cooking surface of the E-series grills, with room for 28 burgers or more. This is the most expensive in this series, and yet the others in this group performed slightly better overall. So if you aren't cooking for a baseball team, you might want to consider a smaller model.

All of the grills in the higher-priced Genesis II LX series have stainless lids and stainless grates, which aren't as prone to scratching and chipping as porcelain-coated grates. In addition to a side burner, the LX grills have a cabinet where you can stash your grilling accessories and an LED light that shines down from the lid when you open it. The grills in this series also come with electronic igniters, a fuel gauge, and a 10-year burner warranty.

For $200 more, you get an extra burner and enhanced performance. In fact, the midsized Weber Genesis II LX S-340 grill is the best of the Weber Genesis II grills we tested, scoring high enough to make our list of top picks. Heating evenness was excellent, and preheating and indirect cooking were just a notch below that.

Indirect cooking wasn't quite as good on the larger, four-burner Weber Genesis II LX S-440, $1,600, but preheating, evenness, and cooking at very low and very high temperatures were impressive. This large grill can accommodate 28 burgers or more.

This brings us to the LX grill with the largest cooking surface, the six-burner Weber Genesis II LX S-640. It costs $2,000 and scores almost as well as the four-burner model above, although its temperature range wasn't as wide. At 6 feet long, it takes up about as much space as a couch.

For years I've covered the increasing water and energy efficiency of washers and what it means to consumers, along with innovations in a variety of products, and whether manufacturers deliver on their promises. What I'm really trying to do is to help consumers, and consumers help me by posting comments and posing questions. So thanks!

    The Virtual Weber Gas Grill

Today I had a chance to get up close and personal with some of the new 2017 Weber Genesis II gas grills at a local Ace Hardware store in San Jose, CA. All were base models, not the high-end LX model. One was a 2-burner model, two were 3-burner, and one was 4-burner.

Genesis II SE-410 4-burner in Crimson

    Overall Impressions of Genesis II

To my eye, the lids appear just a short and squat in-person as they do in photos. A member of The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board reports that the grate to lid height is 1″ shorter than 2016 models. Perhaps it’s a optical illusion, but it sure seems shorter than that.

Although I didn’t get to fire-up any of these grills, the design of the new GS4 High Performance Grilling System looks promising. The GS4 system consists of four components:

    • The E2i Electronic Ignition System that ignites each burner independently.
    • The new tapered burners that provide consistent gas flow from front to back for even heat distribution.
    • The good old Flavorizer bars plus new heat deflectors that help distribute heat evenly throughout the cookbox.
    • The Grease Management System consisting of a large center-mounted catch pan with disposable drip tray.

One of the first impressions you get from a Weber gas grill is when you lift the lid and feel its substantial weight. That does not change with these grills. The lids feel heavy and sturdy, the handles strong and secure.

However, when you start looking more closely at other components, they don’t seem as substantial. The work surfaces, the control panel, some of the smaller pieces on the back side of the grill, and especially the cover that visually screens the propane tank seem quite flimsy.

The Tuck-Away warming rack and the folding left-side work surface (on 2- and 3-burner models) seemed fussy. Folding these up and down was not smooth and easy.

    Genesis II Assembly

Long gone are the days of “StopWatch Engineering” from the early 2000s when Weber claimed that two people could assemble a Genesis gas grill in 10 minutes with 8 fasteners and a single tool–and they even threw in the tool!

A review of the Genesis II assembly guide indicates that assembly is a two-person task featuring 37 assembly steps and up to 161 parts, depending on the model. Required tools are a Phillips head screwdriver and an included wrench.

Assembly steps are illustrated in picture format with small amounts of text for the most crucial steps. Some steps require 2-3 actions per step, and there are many smiley and frowny face icons indicating the right and wrong way to perform each step.

You start by building-up the frame and then dropping the firebox into the frame, taking care to properly route the electrical wiring and gas line around the grill frame. There are lots of little screws and washers and clips and do-dads…you’ll want to take your time and exercise patience when assembling one of these grills.

If you’re an app person, you might want to avail yourself of a downloadable app called Bilt that offers 3-D step-by-step assembly instructions. It’s available for both iOS and Android smartphones.

    Made in China

Sad, but true, 2016 is the last model year in which all Weber Genesis grills can say, “Made in the United States of America with globally sourced parts and components”. The 2017 model year marks the beginning of Genesis II gas grills being made in China, just like Spirit gas grills have been over the past few years. This applies to all of the basic Genesis II models.

It’s my understanding that the Genesis II LX gas grills are being assembled in the United States…for now.

Here are the MSRP prices for the basic Genesis II grill line-up:

    Photos of Genesis II

Here are some photos I took of these grills and comments on each.

There’s been a lot of commentary about how the new lids look shorter than the 2016 models. They do look squat in person…a member of TVWBB says the grate to lid height is 1″ shorter than 2016 models. On 2- and 3-burner models, the work surface on the left side folds down… …and folds up. The up/down motion was not smooth or precise. It felt a bit cheesy to me. Tool hooks are hidden on the end of the left work surface. Not as convenient as front-mounted hooks. iGrill thermometer holder and Genesis II logo are on the front of the right work surface. The drip pan has a plastic latch that holds it in place. Pull the latch back to release the drip pan, push the latch forward to secure the drip pan. This seemed to work well, hope the plastic holds up over time. The storage shelf slats under the grill are powder-coated metal. When I opened the lid, the first thing I noticed was the Tuck-Away warming rack… …which folds up and is held in place by two brackets. It took two hands to get both ends of the rack aligned with the brackets in order to lock in place. It seemed a bit fussy to me. Here are the stainless steel grates I found inside the SE-410 4-burner model, a special model available only at certain dealers like Ace Hardware. I will have to compare these to a 2016 model to see if they are the same as current S/S grates. I’ve removed the right cooking grate to reveal the stainless steel Flavorizer bars. The S/S Flavorizer bars seem thinner than ones I’ve handled in the past, but again I will have to check a 2016 model to confirm any difference. There’s a semi-circular notch cut into the end of each Flavorizer bar that lets you to light the burner manually with a long match, if necessary. And each Flavorizer bar is stamped “SS” to indicate stainless steel, I assume. Removing the Flavorizer bars reveals the stainless steel burners and a series of heat deflectors that promote even heat distribution throughout the firebox. The burners are rectangular boxes whose height tapers slightly from front to back to provide an even flame across the entire length of the burner. The front end of each burner has its own integrated igniter with protective cover. The back end of each burner snaps into a bracket. Here’s a close-up of the burner holes. They appear to be punched from the inside surface of the burner, resulting in little raised nozzles. Here’s the cast iron cooking grates in one of the 3-burners grills. They seem to be the same as 2016 grates. Removing the cooking grate reveals the porcelain enameled Flavorizer bars. They seem less substantial than past enameled bars. Perhaps the saddest feature of the new Genesis II gas grill…it’s now Made in China, just like the Spirit gas grill.

Guide Review - Weber Genesis II LX S-340 Gas Grill

In the past, if you wanted a Weber Genesis Gas Grill, your choices included colors, whether or not to have a side burner, and a few minor cosmetic elements, like stainless steel hood and doors. Now, this ever popular grill can be had in a number of sizes, ranging from a small two-burner unit to the monster six-burner.

The LX series of Genesis grills takes the line to a new high-end position. Where the standard Genesis II is made in China, the LX series is made in the United States in the same factor that once made all of the Genesis and Summit series gas grills.

But it isn't just the variety in the number of burners (there are also two, four and six burner versions of this model). The entire cooking system has been redesigned, most notably, the burners with what they call the GS4 cooking system. In the past, the burners on a Weber gas grill were the typical stainless steel tubular burners. The new burners are rectangular, top ported and tapered. What this means is that the fire shots directly up into the "flavorizer" bars and are tapered to provide an even heat front to back. Simply put, the pressure inside the burner is the same all they way through, so the flames have the exact same pressure through every port. This gives the Genesis, one of the most even heats of any gas grill on the market.

The other innovation with the model is the new ignition system. Turn the control knobs and the igniters continuously keep the burners lit. These igniters sit under a protective cuff that Weber is confident will allow them to last for ten years.

They even warranty the ignition system for that long, giving this grill the longest and most complete warranty in the industry. Weber's legendary support remains unchanged and with this warranty, the rest of the business is going to have to catch up on reliability.

The Genesis II LX S-340 is a full feature grill. It has three main burners, a good quality side burner and a long list of bells and whistles. These include a tank scale, illuminated control panel and complete compatibility with Weber's iGrill 3 technology. With this added feature, you can monitor the grills cooking temperature as well as multiple food items. It will also monitor fuel levels and remotely control the lights in the control panel. For a list price of $1,499USD (typically selling for $1,299USD) this is a large, but simple gas grill.

The price of this grill is relatively high, but the construction quality is excellent and it more than delivers on all of its promises.

The one odd, even humorous feature of this gas grill is that the burners have a "High Plus" setting, meaning that you can literally turn the heat to 11. "Spinal Tap" fans will get the argument that maybe high should have just been hotter and that there isn't a point in a "High Plus" setting.

New 2017 Weber Genesis Gas Grill Photos

Genesis II With Open & Closed Cabinets Featured at Ace Hardware Convention in Chicago

Photos of new 2017 Weber Genesis gas grills started showing up online in the past few weeks. One of my sources saw these grills today at the Ace Hardware convention in Chicago and says they are real beauties!

Weber Genesis II LX stainless steel 6-burner with storage cabinet, side burner, handle lights and integrated tool hooks

Weber is reviving the Genesis II nameplate from the late-1980s for these new grills in 2017. Back in those early years, the Genesis line consisted of 2- and 3-burner grills. Around 1998, Weber introduced the premium Summit line that offered 4- and 6-burner models. In 2007, Weber dropped the Genesis Silver A 2-burner grill from the lineup in favor of the less expensive Spirit E-210 2-burner grill, leaving Genesis as a line of 3-burner grills only.

For 2017, Weber greatly expands the Genesis lineup. The Genesis II features a series of 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-burner grills in propane and LP that come in a variety of colors, including stainless steel, and in basic and upgraded LX versions.

Weber Genesis II black 6-burner with open cabinet

Weber brings back an open cabinet design on basic models–a design they discontinued in 2003/2004 in favor of enclosed storage cabinets with doors–with the usual porcelain coated cooking grates and Flavorizer bars. All grills appear to have an “iGrill Ready” work surface for use with the recently acquired iGrill remote thermometer.

An upgraded LX option is available that provides the enclosed cabinet along with other features including side burner, stainless steel rod cooking grates, stainless steel Flavorizer bars, electronic LP tank meter, handle lights and front-mounted tool hooks.

Weber Genesis II crimson 4-burner with open cabinet

Lids appear shorter in these photos than on current grills. Not sure if that’s real or just something having to do with the photography. It will be interesting to measure the dimensions to see how much headroom, if any, has been lost inside the grill.

Weber Genesis II LX stainless steel 2-burner with storage cabinet, side burner, handle light and integrated tool hooks

2017 marks the return of a 2-burner grill to the Genesis lineup. The last 2-burner Genesis was the Genesis Silver A in 2006 which gave way to the Spirit E-210 in 2007. It will be interesting to see how this new grill is received by consumers vs. the Spirit 2-burner.

    New Trademarked Logo

All these grills feature the “Weber GS4 High Performance” logo located on the upper left corner of the front control panel. Weber GS4 High Performance is a new trademark registered in March 2016 that apparently refers to newly designed high performance burners.

MSRP for basic grills are said to be:

Top of the line 6-burner grill in LX configuration is said to have an MSRP of $1,999.

    More Choice or More Confusion?

The unanswered question in all this is whether these new grills will compliment the existing Spirit and Summit lines or whether they will create confusion. With the 2-burner grill overlapping with the Spirit line and the 4- and 6-burner grills overlapping with the Summit line, it will be incumbent on Weber to clearly explain the value proposition of these new grills and to delineate the feature differences between the Spirit/Genesis/Summit lines, beyond just the obvious difference in MSRP.

It’s not easy for manufacturers to communicate these differences…I remember from my days working at HP how difficult it was for the company to clearly and concisely to explain the difference in features between so many brands and models of laptop computer or inkjet printer. What’s the difference between Photosmart and OfficeJet? Between Pavilion and Elitebook and Probook?

Also, there is such a thing as too many choices. Too many choices can paralyze consumers. Currently there are 4 models in the Genesis line, and the only overlap is with Spirit 3-burner grills. If you want a 2-, 4- or 6-burner grill, you’ve got to look outside the Genesis line.

Now, If I understand correctly, there will be 8 models in the Genesis line, and all of them will overlap with grills in the Spirit and Summit lines. I predict confusion for consumers…unless Weber discontinues Spirit and/or Summit, but the likelihood of that seems to be about zero.

I hope Weber isn’t making a mistake here. Only time will tell.

Weber Genesis II Gas Grill Expert Review

Iconic brand; good value; available in black, smoke, crimson, and copper; outstanding service & warranty.

Weber Genesis gas grills are among the most popular grills in the world. The Genesis II series offers well-built gas grills at an affordable price point. I love that these grills are available in several colors to fit anyone's taste, and are available in 2,3,4, or 6 burners models. The grill features an open cart design with bottom shelf that makes access to storage easy. The Genesis II also saves you valuable storage space with its propane tank storage area, located under the right side shelf, which allows you to connect and mount your propane tank underneath the side shelf. The tank mount features a handy gauge which allows you to monitor your fuel level.

The tried and true Weber Cooking System is great at providing even heat distribution and minimizing flare ups. The Genesis II features porcelain-enameled cast iron cooking grids that have notches cut out towards the front, allowing you to easily see whether each burner is lit. The grill also has a tuck-away warming rack, providing you with an additional 198-inches of cooking space when you need it. Under the grids lies the triangular-shaped Flavorizer Bars that sit directly above the burners. These shield the burners by catching drippings and turning them into smoke, adding flavor back into your food. Weber pioneered the Flavorizer Bar in 1984, and since then they've proven to do their job extremely well, which is why they're still preventing flare-ups on all Weber gas grills today!

The Genesis II is powered by stainless steel burners that get narrower towards the back of the grill. Since most grills get hotter towards the back side of the grill, this reduces that heat, producing a more consistent heat across the cooking surface. The burners are lit by a reliable push button electronic ignition and produce around 12,000 BTUs per burner.

With over 50 years in business, Weber customer service is as good as it gets. They have a 10 year warranty on the grill body and on the burners. They have reputable service and quickly handle any service or replacement part situations.

The Weber Genesis II does not score well for high heat due to a low maximum BTU output, when compared to other grills in the same class. Not all items qualify for our Simple Shipping program.

    * This flat rate or free shipping policy applies to products shipped via standard shipping to locations in the contiguous 48 states. BBQGuys.com reserves the right to choose delivery type (parcel or freight), carrier, and service level of each shipment shipped via standard shipping. In the event of freight shipments, standard shipping includes curb-side delivery and lift gate service. If special considerations are required for curb-side delivery (ex: hard to reach areas such as Martha’s Vineyard or a rooftop condo, etc), these special considerations will be an additional fee and are not included in standard shipping. Our Simple Shipping Policy does not apply to items that require you to call for pricing, as these sometimes require special delivery considerations.

    45 Day No Hassle Returns

We want you to love what you buy! But if you don’t, we offer a simple “No Hassle Returns” policy. We allow you to return all new, unused, unassembled, and resalable items in their original packaging within 45 days of delivery for a refund (minus the original and return shipping costs incurred by BBQGuys.com). Naturally, if your return is because of our error, you are not responsible for any shipping costs.

    • If your return request is due to product defect or damage, we will first work with you to get the product repaired. If repair is not possible, then we’ll work with you to get it replaced.
    • If your return will be coming back via freight truck, we will require you to provide us a photo before your return will be authorized. This can be as simple as a cell phone pic! We just need a “before” picture in case there is any damage to the item on its way back to us.
    • To expedite the returns process, before shipping the item(s) back, make sure they are clean, the packaging is sufficient to prevent damage, and (if necessary) you note all defects along with the photos taken.

    Important information about refund eligibility:

To be eligible for a “No Hassle Return,” items must be returned within 45 days of delivery in “Like New” condition. “Like New” condition is when a returned item is unused, unassembled, and has been returned in the original packaging.

    • Full refunds do not apply to certain items, including clearance items, gift cards, gift certificates, items that have been personalized, and items clearly marked as “non-returnable,” such as products sold as “Warehouse Deals.”
    • The costs of return shipping are deducted from your refund or merchandise credit.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item has been inspected by us in our warehouse.
    • Refunds must be applied to the same credit card, debit card, or other form of payment used in the original transaction.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item is inspected upon return delivery.
    • BBQGuys.com reserves the right to refuse a refund on a returned item if:
      • The item that has been returned does not match the original item shipped to the customer.
      • The returned item is missing parts or the original product’s packaging.
      • The item was damaged during the return shipment due to improper or insufficient packaging.
      • The item being returned has been obviously heavily used (such as significant charcoal buildup inside a grill).
      • The item has been assembled in a way that would impede proper packaging for return shipping.

In exchange situations, there are TWO options:

    1. If you need the product right away, you can purchase a replacement on a new order to get it shipped out as soon as possible. Then return the original item and we’ll refund you for the original once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition.
    2. If you can wait a little longer, return the original item and once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition, we’ll refund you for that purchase, then have you purchase the replacement on a new order and we’ll ship the replacement as soon as possible.

Custom made-to-order/special order items are made to your specifications. Due to the custom nature of made-to-order/special order items, all sales are final. Made-to-order/special order items defective due to manufacturing will be repaired/replaced as long as the claim is made within the warranty period offered by the manufacturer. Custom pieces damaged in shipping will still follow all steps for a freight claim as previously listed here. All Custom pieces will be repaired or replaced with an item of the same nature as previously ordered. You will not be allowed to order an item that differs from the damaged or defective item.

Feel free to use our simple online form to obtain a Returns Authorization Number (also known as an RMA number) and let us walk you through our 45 Day No Hassle Returns process.

I have been ordering from BBQ Guys around 5 years - they have consistently provided wonderful service and the people on the phones have always been warm, friendly and patient - I mostly order online but every now and then you need a live person and these folks are the best - totally 5 STARS!

We have been working with BBQ Guys to finish our new outdoor kitchen. Seda did great work explaining everything to us and helping us select just the right equipment at just the right price. He is a real credit to your business.

I ordered an outdoor refrigerator and a Primo XL cooker from the BBQGuys online store. The prices were very competitive. I was pleased with the communications and prompt processing of the order. Both arrived via freight carrier. The firebox on the Primo cooker was broken. The customer service was great and the firebox was replaced quickly. I highly recommend BBQGuys. I will be shopping with them again.

Completely happy with the products I have purchased through BBQGuys. While one of the appliances I ordered did stop working within a years time Kimberly in customer care took control of my issue in a prompt, friendly and professional manner replacing the appliance without any frustration or hardship on my part. Easy and actually painless as my expectation was, when I started the process, that I was going to be in for a long drawn out ordeal. With the quality of products they sell and the customer care they offer I will always make BBQGuys my number one choice of outdoor kitchen appliances.

    Weber Genesis II E-310

The smarts on this powerful Weber grill are worth it

The Good The Weber Genesis II is built to last, easy to clean and packs powerful burners. Its smart capabilities and app provide useful grilling help.

The Bad It takes practice to use this grill to its best. It's expensive and its connected features cost extra.

The Bottom Line Seasoned BBQ pros will like the Weber Genesis II’s sturdy construction and thoughtful design, but casual cooks should buy a basic grill instead.

    Full Review

Weber's reputation for building durable, practical outdoor grills goes back decades. Now the company wants you to think smart, too, when you think Weber. To that end, the $850 Weber Genesis II E-310 has lots of what you expect from a Weber BBQ, plus a side of app connectivity.

To enable the smarts on this already expensive propane cooker you'll need to shell out an extra $100 for Weber's iGrill 3 accessory. It's actually a fairly useful add-on, but it's not included in the core product. Due to three powerful burners and sensitive heat controls, mastering your grilling technique on this hot-rod cooker also takes practice.

All this makes the Genesis II suited to more experienced grill enthusiasts with the patience to master this high-end unit. If smarts in a more forgiving high-end grill is what you want, the $800 Char-Broil SmartChef Tru-Infrared is slightly cheaper and easier to use.

Great so far!

Ive owned this grill for 4 months and happy with it. It heats evenly, easy to clean, seems to be built durably. Time will tell if it is good as my old grill (17yr old american made grill). I would recommend using the weber stainless steel smoke box for an additional grilling experience.
