Weber Summit Charcoal Grill: It Grills, It Smokes, And It's Expensive.

Is It Really The #GrillofaLifetime?

Something Is Coming

On March 2, 2016, a Weber dealer in Wichita, Kansas was the first to let the world know about a new Weber product with this single sentence:

Something is coming.

Two days later, on March 4, Weber-Stephen Products LLC made their first official announcement on Facebook and Twitter:

Coming April 6! #GrillofaLifetime

Weber's Teaser Campaign Freaks-Out The Rabid, Obsessed Fan Boys

Over the course of the next month, Weber teased us with a series of videos and images on Facebook and Twitter. The freelance Creative Director and writer behind the videos, John Angelopulos, posted on his blog:

"Weber was about to launch it's biggest grill innovation in over 20 years. To match the loyalty of Weber's hardcore fan base, we teased up the reveal with a social campaign that tapped into their freakish obsession with grilling."

The Associate Creative Director/Art Director for the videos, Matthew Sharpe, blogged the following:

"Weber has a lot of loyal customers. It's actually fair to call them rabid and obsessed. They are in love with how well these grills can grill. So what happens when they decide to launch a new grill that will change the game all together? We'll see April 6, but first we had to tease and watch the fan boys freak out."

Do some of us have a rabid, freakish obsession with Weber grills? Yes, we do. Do we love Weber grills? Absolutely. So if you were following the campaign online and felt your loyalty to Weber was being played. well, yes, that's exactly what was happening.

Looking High & Low For Details

I looked high and low for leaked photos, specs, schematics, and owners manuals. but I didn't find any. I've got to give credit to Weber, they did a good job of keeping the product details under wraps until the very end. There wasn't the epic fail for this product that occurred in Fall 2013 when a European Weber dealer published a photo of the yet-to-be-announced 14.5" Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. followed by Weber accidentally posting the cooker's parts schematic on their support website!

Still, there were tantalizing clues swirling around the conversation on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board prior to the April 6 announcement:

  • P eople who initially signed up for Weber's product announcement e-mail list received a confirmation from the "Weber Summit Charcoal mailing list".
  • A few dealers announced they would be revealing "the new Weber Summit Charcoal Grill" at their stores on April 6.
  • People spoke with individuals having knowledge of the product who said it would be a two-layer, air-insulated metal grill with gas assist lighting, a hinged heat deflector for indirect cooking, and a top vent daisy wheel that pops up for increased airflow for high-temp grilling.
  • We heard there would be a $1,500 base model and a $2,000 Performer-like table-mounted version.

As with any new Weber model, availability of the Summit Charcoal Grill will be limited for some period of time as inventory builds in the retail pipeline. At the time of writing, Weber is making the grill available at a select number of retail outlets; check the Weber Dealer Locator for a dealer near you (select "Summit Charcoal Grill" or "Summit Charcoal Grilling Center" from the dropdown selector).

Why Did Weber Make This Grill? What's The Big Deal?

T his is the big question. why did Weber come out with the Summit Charcoal Grill, and what does it offer that you can't find in existing Weber grills or in competitive offerings?

The "why" is that Weber wants to compete in the profitable, high-end charcoal grill market that is currently owned by the Big Green Eggs and Kamados of the world, in the same way they already compete in the high-end gas grill market.

The "what" lies in the ability of this grill to be equally proficient in both grilling and smoking. The classic Weber kettle is a great "hot & fast" grill, but not a great smoker. Yes, you can use it for smoking, but with some effort. The WSM is a great "low & slow" smoker, but not a great grill. So the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill attempts to do both things very well, to offer the best of both worlds in a single unit, and thus take on the likes of Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe head-on.

Leveraging their history of metal work, Weber is relying on double-walled, air-insulated, porcelain-enameled steel to create efficiencies and performance similar to ceramic cookers, but in a lighter weight package and with the supposed ability to recover more quickly when overheated than ceramics. The design allows higher temps for grilling and more efficient charcoal use for smoking, allowing 10-12 hour cook times with less charcoal than we're used to using in the WSM. The adjustable height charcoal grate moves the coals up closer to the meat for grilling and down lower for barbecuing. An air-insulated diffuser plate can be inserted for indirect cooking or removed for direct grilling. The Rapidfire lid damper offers traditional Weber daisy wheel control, but can pop open during fire-up so the grill reaches 550°F in 20 minutes for grilling. There's ease of charcoal lighting with a gas assist propane lighter. The whole thing rolls around on wheels, there's accessories storage, and on the Grilling Center version, onboard charcoal storage. All this in a package that will not crack, that weighs less and is easier to move and transport than ceramic cookers, and at a comparable price to ceramics.

Add the One-Touch system for easy ash removal and the Weber Gourmet BBQ System for wok cooking, cast iron cooking, Korean barbecue, pizza stone and more, and you begin to understand the value proposition offered by the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill.

Is It Worth The Money?

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Weber fans have never seen a Weber charcoal grill in the $1,500-$2,000 price range before, and to be honest, it freaks out some people. It's hard to know how much of the price is for product and how much is for prestige. But we are used to Big Green Eggs costing $1,100 before all the necessary add-ons, and we are familiar with the Weber Summit gas grill starting at $1,500 while the proficient Weber Genesis gas grill starts for less than half that amount. So I think we're in an "adjustment period" where people are getting to know this new grill and its capabilities and deciding whether or not they will become comfortable with the pricing. Only time will tell if enough people find value at these prices to make the Summit Charcoal Grill a success.

Having said that, the price of this grill is clearly not for everyone, and I don't expect to see lots of people putting their grill and smoker collection up for sale in order to buy a Summit Charcoal Grill. If you're new to the hobby and looking to save money, for $800 you can buy both the top of the line Weber Performer Deluxe and the excellent 22.5" WSM, assuming you have room for both, and still have $700 leftover to purchase your charcoal stockpile.

Does The Summit Charcoal Grill Replace The WSM?

No, it does not. Weber does not intend for the Summit Charcoal Grill to replace the WSM, and based on price alone, it's unlikely to do so. But the Summit might be a good choice for someone with deep pockets wanting to buy a single cooker that's good at both high-temp grilling and low-temp smoking.

The 24" cooking grate with optional extender grate should come close to the capacity of a 22.5" WSM and exceeds the capacity of a 18.5" WSM. The fuel efficiency of the unit, due to its insulated design, is an advantage over the thin-walled WSM. The Summit's gas ignition system lights charcoal more easily than using a Weber chimney starter in the WSM. And don't forget, unlike the WSM, the whole thing rolls around on wheels.

On the other hand, upon initial inspection, servicing the charcoal and water pan appears somewhat more difficult in the Summit than in the WSM (although adding charcoal might not be necessary in some cases due to better fuel efficiency). The Summit does not have an access door like the WSM, so water must be serviced through the hinged cooking grate (if water is used at all in this grill) and fuel through both the hinged grate and hinged diffuser plate. There's even a new charcoal rake tool for making the task easier, so it must not be that easy to begin with. It's the access door that makes these tasks easy in the WSM. but the door fits poorly on many units, so lack of a door may be counted as an advantage for the Summit.

Unlike the WSM, the Summit cannot easily break down into pieces for transport. The Summit would be more challenging to transport to a barbecue competition than a WSM, especially if moving it by yourself. And there's the issue of price—you can buy five 18.5" WSMs for the price of just one Weber Summit Charcoal Grill.

At some point, I would like to take the Summit Charcoal Grill for a test drive and compare its operation and performance with the WSM. If I ever get a chance to do so, I'll be sure to write about it here.

In the event of freight shipments, standard shipping includes curb-side delivery and lift gate service. We allow you to return all new, unused, unassembled, and resalable items in their original packaging within 45 days of delivery for a refund (minus the original and return shipping costs incurred by BBQGuys.com). Naturally, if your return is because of our error, you are not responsible for any shipping costs.

    • The costs of return shipping are deducted from your refund or merchandise credit.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item has been inspected by us in our warehouse.
    • Refunds must be applied to the same credit card, debit card, or other form of payment used in the original transaction.
    • In many cases, refunds are not processed until the item is inspected upon return delivery.

      • The returned item is missing parts or the original product’s packaging.
      • The item was damaged during the return shipment due to improper or insufficient packaging.
      • The item being returned has been obviously heavily used (such as significant charcoal buildup inside a grill).
      • The item has been assembled in a way that would impede proper packaging for return shipping.

In exchange situations, there are TWO options:

    1. If you need the product right away, you can purchase a replacement on a new order to get it shipped out as soon as possible. Then return the original item and we’ll refund you for the original once we’ve received it back to our warehouse in “Like New” condition.

I have been ordering from BBQ Guys around 5 years - they have consistently provided wonderful service and the people on the phones have always been warm, friendly and patient - I mostly order online but every now and then you need a live person and these folks are the best - totally 5 STARS!

We have been working with BBQ Guys to finish our new outdoor kitchen. Seda did great work explaining everything to us and helping us select just the right equipment at just the right price. He is a real credit to your business.

I ordered an outdoor refrigerator and a Primo XL cooker from the BBQGuys online store. The prices were very competitive. I was pleased with the communications and prompt processing of the order. Both arrived via freight carrier. The firebox on the Primo cooker was broken. The customer service was great and the firebox was replaced quickly. I highly recommend BBQGuys. I will be shopping with them again.

Completely happy with the products I have purchased through BBQGuys. While one of the appliances I ordered did stop working within a years time Kimberly in customer care took control of my issue in a prompt, friendly and professional manner replacing the appliance without any frustration or hardship on my part. Easy and actually painless as my expectation was, when I started the process, that I was going to be in for a long drawn out ordeal. With the quality of products they sell and the customer care they offer I will always make BBQGuys my number one choice of outdoor kitchen appliances.

I would highly recommend using BBGuys.com to purchase a bbq. Dominic was very helpful in finding the right size grill to fit my needs. He was great in keeping in touch with me through the process. I would recommend calling if you have any questions as Dominic assisted me through the entire process.

New Weber Summit Charcoal Grill (Reviews/Ratings/Prices)

Start finding answers in our Resource Center full of Videos, Buying Guides and Checklists

Weber is in the process of launching their first charcoal and smoker, the Summit Kettle Grill. It’s essentially getting back to the basics of cooking with an open fire, which can now be done safely in the comfort of your own backyard.

We will look at the difference between gas and charcoal cooking, and the various features of the Weber.

    Charcoal and Gas Cooking

I once ordered a chicken sandwich at a restaurant and asked if the sandwich was any good. The chef said it would be the best chicken sandwich I would ever eat. He was right, because it was cooked on a charcoal grill.

All the professional grills will use some variant of charcoal and wood, because they enhance and infuse the meat with better flavor. On the Summit grill, you have the flavor of charcoal and the speed of gas cooking.

The Weber Summer Charcoal Grill is designed for everyone, whether a seasoned pro or a beginner. The unit comes with step by step instructions so that anyone can feel comfortable and cook on it successfully, whether just charcoal or smoking or a combination of the two.

    Let’s look at the unit.

Summit® Charcoal Grill (expected launch is Spring 2016)

    • Stainless steel hinged cooking grate
    • Porcelain-enameled, air-insulated, double-walled bowl and lid
    • Stainless steel air insulated hinged diffuser plate
    • Two position fuel grate
    • Slow cook, smoke bowl vent setting

    • Heavy-duty steel cart frame
    • One-Touch ™ cleaning system
    • Removable, high-capacity aluminum ash catcher
    • Wire bottom shelf
    • Easy open lid hinge
    • Rapidfire ® lid damper

The unit is available in two sizes, 16 or 22 inch. The price is reasonable, compared to some of the competition compared to the Green Egg or Kalamazoo, for example. The pricing has not quite been released.

The unit has some minor assembly, but not much and weighs just about 150 pounds. Unlike the competition, most of the accessories are at no extra charge. The competitive Big Green Egg's accessories are all a la carte and expensive. The hybrid drawer Kalamazoo starts at $10,000.

    Key Highlights

The lid is constructed out of porcelain and aluminum. The advantage to this, along with a spring hinge system, is not only easy on the wrist, it will also offer great insulation. The unit will keep the outside of the unit 50% cooler than the internal temperature. (Most of the competition are extremely hot on the outside, raising safety concerns for some).

If you have cooked with other charcoal grills, one of the most frustrating complaints we hear is that the pre-heat can be long, or that you’re having to “baby sit” the unit.

A typical charcoal grill can't keep a low consistent temperature for a long period of time. So the unit requires being “baby sat”. The competition calls it “burping” or letting the heat escape by opening the lid. The temperature most often needs to be adjusted when cooking for a long period of time. In addition, the outside temperature of the unit becomes scolding hot.

With the construction of Weber’s Summit Charcoal Grill, the big point of difference is being able to maintain temperature consistently and “set it” and “forget it”, especially for a long period of time.

Now you can enjoy your company instead of laboring at the grill all day. The Weber is one of the fastest pre-heat times at roughly 20 minutes versus most competition at around 35-40 minutes, to be evenly heated.

    Cart Option

Weber also has a cart for this unit which allows for easy moving, charcoal/wood chunk storage, a place for drip pans, as well as small prep area.

The unit requires a 1lb gas tank to ignite the charcoal. Turn the dial to turn the gas on and you’ll hear a click and then after about three minutes you can shut the gas off and the charcoal will be lit. You can use charcoal to cook and or wood chunks, the possibilities are limitless.

    Two Types of Wood

There are lots of flavors to choose from for example, Apple, Cherry, Pecan, Mesquite & Hickory.

    1. Smoke Chips: Coarsely chopped wood chips ideal for smoking over shorter periods of time. You’d place directly on the cooking grate along with charcoal or a smoker box. You want to make sure to soak in water before use.

    2. Smoke Chunks: Large pieces of wood placed among the charcoal or smoker. These are best for smoking over a long period of time.

    How to Use

At the top of the grill, you will notice there is a round vent that can be adjusted. The more air you allow into the grill the hotter the fire will grow and the faster you’d need to replace charcoal and or wood chips.

To minimize replenishing, you can keep the lid closed as much as possible. In additionm the vents on the bottom of the grill should be left open while grilling; however the top vent can be closed as much as halfway to maintain the desired cooking temperature.

On the bottom of the grill, you will notice a stainless ash catcher. This covers the vents in the grill and can restrict the coals of air which will lower the heat very quickly. It’s suggested for proper temperature management to empty the ashtray every 30 minutes or so.

As always, Weber offers a bunch of additional accessory options such as drip pans, covers, grill tools etc.

Another great innovation with this series is Weber’s Gourmet BBQ System. The cooking grates fit 22 inch kettles and the performer charcoal grills as well as the Weber Spirit, Genesis and Summit Gas Grills. Once you have the grate, all you have to do is remove the center insert grate and replace it with any of Weber’s Gourmet Cookware accessories.

    Weber Summit 2 Tiered Rack

This is pretty awesome. They offer a griddle, poultry roaster, wok, sear grate and pizza stone with carry rack.

When you purchase your Summit Charcoal Grill, you can go to Weber’s website and register for a free recipe book, with over 100 recipes and pictures. It's great for opening your eyes to all of the versatility this grill can offer.

In addition, there are a few pages dedicated to the grilling basics which will explain simple “how to's” and tips and tricks to get perfect results every time, with the grill as well as working with woods and charcoal.

    Final Thoughts

We are very excited for this launch. The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill definitely seems promising and offers consumers great value as well as a wide range of cooking options. Cooking with a true fire always gives the best authentic results when cooking food compared to a gas flame.

In addition, what’s great with this unit is being able to cook for a long period of time with a full range in temperature accurately as well as smoking all in one unit.

Weber has made it super simple, with step by step guides and instructions, whether a beginner or a seasoned pro to get the best tasting results every time.

The Charcoal Summit will allow you to cook many different ways without having to re-learn and re-educate your self like the other ceramic grills on the market.

    The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill

This morning, Weber launched the Summit Charcoal Grill. or rather THE grill of a lifetime. A lot of work has gone into making the ultimate backyard grill. Here's a little piece of the puzzle as to how I came to be involved with and ultimately, love the SCG.

My first brush with the new Weber Summit Charcoal Grill was during our LA commercial shoot last fall. Since there were only a handful of photo worthy demo units, two grills were trucked from Chicago, through Denver, to LA, under utmost secrecy and safety. I remember climbing into the back of the rental truck in the lot of the production company. While only a few feet away, another SCG was being used for the teaser video we’ve all been watching the last month, this grill was all mine to examine.

I recall lifting the hinged lid and running my fingers along the work surface. This was one bad ass grill. It was familiar, yet different. For as much as I enjoyed taking in its lines and imagining its grilling potential, I never got a chance to completely run it through its paces. Little did I know, in a short period of time I would.

When you get a phone call asking to create content for a secret new Weber grill, it’s pretty much an out of body experience. I equated the whole project to hiding the stealth fighter in my backyard. Show what it can do and make sure no one sees it. It doesn’t exist. Wheel it out, take some pictures, wheel it away. You know nothing. This is your mission if you choose to accept it.

    Well, that’s easy. Mission accepted.

Granted, I did have a freak out over a Google Street View Car. but thankfully, I kept the "steath figther" hidden.

Within a week, not only was the grill shipped from Weber, but Tom Fuller, Weber’s Global Director of Product Development, came down to spend a few days showing me the ins and outs. We grilled a lot and, of course, had a few beers. I think there was quite a bit of laughter, too.

Tom is a great guy and is immensely proud of the SCG, as he should be. The Summit Charcoal Grill is my new favorite Weber grill. If I had to clean the deck off all of my grills but one. The SCG would be still standing.

Over the next month, I spent all of my free time grilling, filming, editing, and shooting pictures. Even when not working on the project, I still fired up the SCG for dinner, lunch, and the occasional breakfast.

As someone who loves to post pictures on social media of what I’m grilling, the hardest part was making sure the SCG was kept out of sight. While the grill was never seen whole, I did manage to “sneak” in parts of it.

If you look closely through my feeds, you will see lots of stainless steel side table shots, as well as some very tight food on grate pictures. More than once, I grilled dinner on the SCG, only to move everything to the Performer so I could take a picture. Pictures of dinner around here is serious business. I can’t go without.

I have been more than honored to be a small part of this huge Weber project. I know what I think, now I can’t wait to hear what Weber enthusiasts around the world think. Finally, my SCG can shed it’s “stealth fighter” status and rightfully take its place with the rest of my grills.

If I were to crown a king of my grilling fleet, the Summit Charcoal Grill would be it.

Note: My work for Weber is compensated. My love for the SCG is never-ending.

Weber Summit Charcoal – Thoughts on #GrillOfALifetime

“It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.” – Ferris Bueller

    #GrillOfALifetime

Weber just announced their new Weber Summit Charcoal grill, which they’ve been teasing with #GrillOfALifetime hashtags for months now. If you were following me yesterday on Twitter, then you know I’m excited about this grill. 1 And…my apologies for all the ranting.

It’s Weber’s response to the kamado grill craze – a double walled steel grill, with gas ignition, a 24 inch cooking surface, hinged lid, redesigned vents, and adjustable height charcoal grate. I can’t wait to get my hands on one and try some reverse searing with the adjustable charcoal grate…or low and slow barbecue…or maybe just some butterflied chickens.

    Why am I so excited?

    • Double walled – giving me the heat retention of a ceramic kamado grill without the weight. All my complaints about Winter Grilling? This fixes a lot of the problems.
    • Adjustable charcoal grate – need to sear? Lift the grate close to the coals for a hit of high heat
    • 24 inch grilling grate – I can always use extra space.

They even built in a port for electronic temperature controllers like the BBQ Guru – I’ve never played with one, but now I’m going to have to try electronic temp control out.

In summary: I wants it. I needs it! Well, other than…

    Weber Summit Charcoal

Are you sitting down? $1699 for the Weber Summit Charcoal, or $2299 for the Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center with attached table and charcoal bin.

Wow. That’s…wheeze…a lot of money. A LOT of money. 2 Especially since I want the Charcoal Grilling Center. After years of using my Performer, I want a side table. This is definitely not a grill for a bargain hunter. But, after looking around, it’s priced in the neighborhood of its kamado grill competitors. It’s a within a few hundred dollars of a 24 inch Big Green Egg XL with Egg Nest, or a Kamado Joe BigJoe. (And those don’t come with a gas starter.)

…but, still, that price. Yikes. I’m going to have to save my pennies for this one…

    No Rotisserie

I love my rotisserie, and desperately want one for the Weber Summit Charcoal. I’m hoping Weber makes something like the Kamado Joe Joetisserie – a wedge shaped rotisserie that fits under a hinged lid. But, for now, there isn’t one for the Summit Charcoal. And that makes me sad.

    Can I actually get one?

[Update 2016-04-18]: Thanks to commenter Nick for the heads up – Weber updated their available dealer list. This includes The Place, my local high end Weber dealer, just down the road from me in Medina. I’m going to drool all over one check them out in person as soon as I’m done updating this post.

Weber is only selling the Summit Charcoal through a limited set of dealers – and the nearest one is about a two hour drive away from me in Columbus, OH. (They are the only dealer selling the Summit Charcoal in the state of Ohio, from what I can see.)

    Weber Summit Charcoal Grill Center

All that said, my grill lust is strong for this one

Now, I know a lot of people are…upset?…offended?…by the price of the grill. The anger on Twitter was intense. If you’re a price conscious shopper, just move on. If you think $1700 for a charcoal grill is expensive…you’re right.

Do I really need a Weber Summit Charcoal? No, my Weber Performer is a great grill, and I still love it. Can I afford one? Umm…ask me when my credit card bills arrive.

But, do I want one? Oh, my, yes. A weather-insulated, XL sized charcoal grill with a gas starter and adjustable charcoal grate? From Weber? I’m so there. Even though the price makes me wheeze (and my wallet cry), I want one.

    Other Info

For more info, check out Weber’s official #GrillOfALifetime site, and the reviews from a couple Friends-Of-DadCooksDinner who got prerelease copies to review. 3 It looks like Weber doesn’t like me enough to give me a pre-release model. Sniff. That’s OK, I’m not hurt. I’m fine. I’ll be fine.

I have to agree it is good looking and the description is mesmerizing…BUT…while we love our Weber and use it all the time except for winter, the fancy igniter broke rather quickly (even with the right care) and we ended up removing it. We know others that had the same problem. Extras like the igniter and the temp gauge are begging to break. Not sure I want to take a $1700 hit for that. Thankfully, the grill was a gift and the fact that they charge you a crazy amount for an igniter and table on wheels was not felt by us that much. 😉

I have a vintage performer with the stainless steel table. Over the 20 or more years that I have owned this masterpiece, I have replaced nearly every piece at least once. The exception might be the frame, which is held together by angle brackets. I just replaced the regulator last week. Anyway, it has become a part of the family, and in spite of the features of the Summit, I think I will keep the performer until it literally disintegrates! The money I save will be used to buy top-quality meats.

I freely admit to being a Dad Cooks Dinner fanboy. When I bought a gas grill a few years ago I bought a Summit because “that’s what Mike uses”. I was going to buy a Weber Performer because “that’s what Mike uses”. Then I saw the promotion for this new grill and put off my purchase until I saw it. It looks great but I just can’t justify the price.

Being self-centered, my second thought (after realizing I can’t afford it) was worrying that Mike will get one and I’ll be drooling over the posts and being disappointed I can’t cook like that because I don’t have the”right” grill

At any rate, I’m going to buy a Performer today so I can “be like Mike” for a while

I have a fanboy? I’m honored! That said, the right grill is the right grill *for you*. Gas, charcoal, Weber, BGE, those are just details. (My obvious bias is for a Weber, and then “with a rotisserie”)

You’ve got another fanboy! Been with you for some years now, ever since I found a reference to an early rotisserie recipe of yours (had to roast it, though, as I didn’t have the wherewithal for a long while, see 2 below)

I WANT the Grill Center, Trouble is

    1. No rotisserie, though if they can do a wedge for the Q series, I’m sure they can do one for this

    2. I’m in the UK, so expect it’ll be a long time before it gets here (as the rotisserie was),and

    3. When it does arrive the price here will probably be much higher than in the U.S, As I’m now a mere pensioner any major new BBQ toys are subject to heavy bargaining itch the boss!

    Keep up the good work

You are saying what I am thinking exactly. Great product, awful price. But let’s be positive about that — I am positive the Grill of a Lifetime makes a great gift! As to the rotisserie, the Kamado Joe vendor was in my local Costco yesterday. He said the Joetisserie is available for their 18 inch model and the 24 inch is under development.

I have ‘lust in my heart’ for this grill, but somehow, it wouldn’t pass the ‘wife’ test. I currently have three Weber grills, which I use- each one gets used a lot… a Performer which I keep on my deck (and of course a Weber rotisserie which of course makes the best turkey ever), a Spirit E310 on my patio and a Q3200 which I have in my garage and use in winter as well as when it rains in summer and I’ll be cooking out (all the time!) When I heard the price on TGOAL, I was totally floored. It is indeed a great product, but adding up the costs of the three grills I currently own (as well as the two Webers I gave my son – the old standard charcoal Weber and a Q200), I’m still nowhere near the cost of it …. so I’ll just forget this and take a cold shower!

You don’t have to go to Columbus to find the new weber summit charcoal grill. Pettities Garden Center in Strongsville has one and B&B Appliance in Parma, OH has theirs on order for their showroom. Also you may want to check out The Place in Medina (SR 18).

I bought a Summit Charcoal Center and I have had it for about a week. I own WSM & 6 year old Performer that works fine but i have been thinking about a upgrading for some time. The price is high but people waste there money on much more things they use maybe once or twice in there life. I grill usually 2 or 3 times a week so it made sense to me as a Purchase and so far the grill hasn’t disappointed in one bit. if you are serious about grilling, smoking etc then this should be the GRILL for you.

Big Green Egg vs. Weber Summit Charcoal Grill (Reviews / Ratings / Prices)

Start finding answers in our Resource Center full of Videos, Buying Guides and Checklists

Weber has just started to manufacture a hybrid gas and charcoal grill. If you have never cooked with charcoal or wood, it is incredibly flavorful. Gas grills are popular, because they are fast. By combining both, you have great flavor, texture and speed.

However, the Big Green Egg has become incredibly popular and should also be considered. Its ceramic body can cook almost anything.

So which one is better? That really depends on how you cook. We will look at both companies, both products and then compare at the end.

    Big Green Egg

The Big Green Egg company was founded in 1974. The company is based in Georgia with manufacturing in Mexico.

The Big Green Egg seems to have a certain following among cooking enthusiasts. Back in ancient civilization Egyptians cooked in ceramic dome shaped vessels. The GI's also brought the ceramic cookers back from Japan and created demand for the modern Big Green Egg.

Ceramics is one of the most sought out cooking methods. It creates a natural convection environment and cooks food effectively, fast, and evenly.

The Big Green Egg uses burning wood chips, rather than gas.The wood chips are more natural and also have the added advantage of adding flavor to the foods. It is also one of the most versatile grills on the market. You can not only grill, but slow cook, bake, smoke, roast, and more.

The Big Green Egg is available in seven sizes with a lifetime warranty. At first I have to admit, I thought it looks kind of small, but you’d be surprised at how much can be cooked.

The Big Green Egg is the best cooking device of its kind, because of the patented components and state-of the-art ceramic technologies. It provides improved insulation, thermal shock tolerance and material strength to its ceramic components.

With the Big Green Egg, comes green egg terminology that owners become accustom too; like “Burping” the egg, or the Egg “Nest”. The Nest is the stand that the Egg can sit in to keep the unit freestanding on a deck.

You do have to learn how to use it as it is different. The term “burping”, for example, is used to reduce flare ups when opening the top. Rather than opening the lid really fast, just slowly open the lid, to allow for the heat to slowly escape and not cause flair up.

As we have said, ceramics are not the same as regular outdoor grills.

    Weber Grills

Weber grills have been around since 1952. They originated in Chicago, IL where George Stephen Sr. created a grill out of a marine buoy. That became the inspiration of the Weber Genesis.

Weber is primarily known for their gas grills. They do have a line of smokers, portables, and charcoal grills as well. The Summit Charcoal is brand new as of May 2016.

    Weber Summit Charcoal Grill

The Summit, is part grill and part smoker with a deep bowl. It looks like a fatter version of a typical Weber kettle grill. The Summit Charcoal grill is air-insulated, double-walled construction for heat retention and safety.

It will also keep the grill 50% cooler than the internal temperature, a two- position fuel grate for smoking and grilling, and a gas ignition system for speed. The kettle is available in two sizes, 16" or 22".

The Weber is designed to provide precise control and hold steady temperatures for what the company claims will last through more than 10 hours of cooking.

It also incorporates many unique features including multi-zone heat options, a hinged diffuser plate, a very impressive two-position fuel grate, an insulated lid and deeper bowl for less charcoal consumption and better heat retention. It also has a slow cook/smoke bowl damper set-up that allows for three bottom vent positions.

Additionally, the Weber Summit charcoal grills feature a Gourmet BBQ System cooking grate. A hinged cooking grate that features a removable center piece designed to fit a variety of Weber accessories including a wok, a griddle, and a poultry roaster.

The cost of the Weber is slightly higher than a comparable sized Big Green Egg, but the Weber has many more standard accessories and weighs a lot less than the Big Green Egg.

    Which Should You Buy?

I would have reflexively said the Big Green Egg because it can certainly do more. Then I saw our chef cook a watermelon and feta salad on the Weber Summit, so I am not as sure.

It depends on how you want to cook. The Big Green Egg is a wonderful cooking product, but there is a learning curve. You do not break out the wood chips immediately and just cook with the Egg. You need to learn how to use it, burp it, and time your food accordingly.

From that standpoint, the Weber will be faster, because of its gas tank. The charcoal/wood chips provides flavor along with the speed of gas. The Weber Summit is easier to use than the Big Green Egg.

Both are great, but the Weber is more simple.
