Weber Q1200 – Grill Review

W hen you think grilling you think Weber Grills. That’s just a fact of life Jack. Weber has been the symbol of quality and dependable grills since 1952. The Weber Q1200 series of portable grills now comes in a rainbow of colors for you to choose from. Recently the Busted Wallet team was given the opportunity to review the sleek Black on Black Q1200 along with a stand to go with it which we’ve been vigorously testing over the last month and our stomachs cannot take anymore. So without further ado let the meat parade begin! I’ll be your Grand Marshall.

Assembly of the Q1200 from opening the box took me less than 20 minutes. I could easily shave that time down to 15 minutes if I became a pro grill assembler. Instructions provided were straight forward and you only need a screwdriver to slap this bad boy together, including the stand! All the pieces were light enough to put together all on my own.

Weber does not disappoint with the design and construction of the Q series of grills. You can tell this grill is made to last and Weber backs that up with their 5 year warranty which guarantees you against rust for five years. Most of the competition in this size of grill offers a 1-3 year warranty.

What’s really cool about the Q1200 is the seven color choices Weber offers. The colors offered are Green, Orange, Black, Purple, Blue, Fuchsia, and Titanium. These color options will allow you to subtly say to your fellow campers at your campground, “Yeah, I’ve got swagger. Yes…I…do. Now wear your envy and jealousy on your sleeve so I can bask in it as you walk by my campsite.” The one slight negative I do have to offer is that the shape of the grill is not very packing friendly. Weber could step up their game in that arena. If you camp like we do, every nook and cranny of you vehicle is crammed tight with gear so a more stackable shape of the grill would be nice.

The size of the grill fully open is 24.6″x40.9″x20.5″. The electronic ignition is an easy to use push button that fires the burner up easily. Also, the burner control allows you to dial in the precise level of heat your precious entree demands. The built-in thermometer is a really excellent feature along with the side fold out work tables which are upgrades over the Q1000. The nice thing about the Q series of Weber grills is that if the Q1000 or Q1200 is too small for your needs you can step up to the Q2000 or the big bad Q3200 grills to satisfy your needs.

Performance:

The Weber Q1200’s performance is quite remarkable compared to other portable propane grills I’ve used in the past. The 189 square inch cooking area is ample for a party of two or we even grilled enough dogs and brats up to the cottage for six people. The stainless steel burner is designed for even heat distribution as it’s configured in a loop around the grill box unlike most other grills that are configured in a straight line down the middle of the grill box. This is all great but can it sear? Yes it can! The porcelain enameled cast-iron grill grates retain heat well to enable you to get that picture perfect sear every time. We also could easily get the grill up to 500 degrees without issue. Now for the meat parade you’ve been waiting for.

Over the last month we grilled chicken breasts, LOTS of brats and hot dogs, burgers, polish sausage (said in a Chris Farley Chicago Bears accent), as well as pork tenderloin. This grill performs as well as some full size grills I have used so would I not only recommend this grill for camping I would use it if you have a small family. Our household only has two people in it and I would use this as our only grill without hesitation.

The Q1200 retails for $199.00 and if you want the portable stand it will set you back $69.99. This is a portable grill with the performance of a full sized grill. You can find more modestly priced portable grills but they will not perform like the Weber Q1200 and of course they won’t have the stylish color choices either. To summarize, this grill gets two thumbs up!

fyi, If you get the black colored Q1200 you won’t notice those pesky grease and sauce stains as much. A real nice grill for the dough though, have you tried the Q2000 or Q3200, how do they compare?

Nice review grill dude! A very nice grill for the money indeed, I agree. I have not tried the larger grills yet. The Q2000 has a slightly larger grill area than the Q1200 is the only difference I see. The Q3200 is larger still but has 2 burners instead of just one and a more robust grill stand you can get for it as well.

All that stuff and you never tested it on steaks? That is the acid test for any grill – can it properly sear the outside while leaving a desirably pink/red interior? Any grill can do chicken and brats, given enough time. Burgers are not an adequate substitute.

I just purchased the Q1200. I had some older green Coleman 16.4 oz propane canisters laying around. I made several attempts to connect one to the grill. Can’t do it – no room. The leg of the grill is squarely in the way. I ended up getting a couple of the Bernzomatic blue propane canisters. I wanted something portable for cooking a burger or steak on after a good motorcycle ride.

Is there any difference in the circumference of the green Bernzomatic canisters and the older green Coleman brands?

I have used propane cans from Ace Hardware, Coleman, and Bernzomatic on the Q1200. All are 16.4 ounce and 1.02 pound cans with no problem. They are all the same size. If you are using the longer propane canisters typically used for torches I can see that would not work or fit. I will say the Bernzomatic cans I’ve used are dark green in color not blue.

Nice little grill

Design flaw located controls below right carry handle rendering rt handle completely useless, poor planning considering weight of item.

I love that the burner Q is a tube and does not collect drippings the way other portable size grill burner plates do. The sloped bottom and drippings pan prevents drippings from pooling and makes clean up easy.

Great grill

As a novice griller, this is a great first grill to own. It heats up quickly, provided nice "outdoor" flavor to food and was pretty easy to clean up. Also, it looks particularly good in the "limited edition" red! It's a great size for 1-3 people and fits well on a small patio. The only challenge we had was determining if the flame was on in bright sunlight. A minor issue. This grill is worth the money!

Best Grill Ever

This grill will make you a better cook, perfect sear marks every time. Very even heat, compact and easy to use. This size is perfect for 2 people. We grill veg, starch and meat in shifts and are able to eat while hot. I love this grill, worth every penny. Do yourself a favor and just buy one of these. you will never regret it. If you are a family, I suggest a larger size but same exact model. We got rid of the extra large super snazzy Brinkmann with all the bells and whistles and never want to look back. This grill is a gem!

As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

Things change, but we believe Weber's commitment to quality and innovation has not.

The biggest barrier for many folks is price. Webers are not cheap, but when you consider that they last decades, the price is easy to justify. In fact, when you consider the fact that some cheap grills fall apart after three years or so, Webers might be considered a bargain.

Our main complaint: All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it's always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is begining to change.

*At the very end of 2016 Weber introduced their new line of Genesis II gas grills to replace the popular Genesis series. Genesis II is made in China. Genesis II LX is still made in Palatine, IL.

Weber Gas Grills

Weber gas grills are simply the gold standard. Designed intelligently with attention to details and built to last, they look good, work beautifully, and almost never break down. If they do, Weber is known for great customer service and for carrying an inventory of parts on models from years gone by. Meathead owned a Genesis for 15-years and can testify from experience.

All their burners are quality stainless steel, have a long life expectancy, and they come with electronic ignitions. The body is heavy. The casters are sturdy and lock solid. Nothing wobbles on Webers. The grease drip pans are easy to access from the front, not the back as with many other grills. Except for the portable/compact Q line, all models hold the propane tank inside the enclosed cart, and can be adapted for natural gas. They have smaller vents in the hood than most gassers which means they retain more heat than grills with more BTUs.

All have inverted V shaped "flavorizer" bars that cover and protect the burners while vaporizing drips and turning them into flavor that gets back up onto the meat. Except for the Q line, all either come with a rotisserie or you can order one as a factory accessory.

Weber gas grills come in four basic flavors, Q, Spirit, Genesis II, and Summit, each with several configurations. Models starting with an "E" are built with Weber's sturdy porcelainized enamel coated steel, and those starting with an "S" are mostly stainless steel.

Addressing an increased interest in outdoor kitchens, in 2011 Weber introduced add on "Island Cabinetry" and "Social Centers", pictured above, to integrate with the Summit lines. These range from matching side tables with enclosed storage to cart mounted side burners, enclosed trash cans and large "Social Areas" that serve as a bar with double door storage underneath. There is also a faux stone island with matching countertops.

Much has been made of 430 and 304 stainless steel: the two most popular grades used by grill manufacturers. Many other inexpensive brands use very thin, low cost 430 stainless to get that shiny showroom floor look. Premium grill makers tout their use of higher quality, higher priced 304 stainless. At some point, Weber decided to switch from 304 to 430. Although 304 is superior, 430 can work just fine if it is a thick gauge like Weber uses, but it is not as durable and one has to expect the life of the grill will be shortened. Will this decision could come back to haunt the castle in Palatine? Only time will tell. Alas, it does not appear Weber's prices were reduced to reflect the cost savings realized with this change.

Weber's Q series started out as small, portable gas and electric grills. Many owners found they liked their little Qs both on the go or at home. So Weber added a few larger models and put some of them on small carts. Although Weber's quality and service usually justify their higher prices, there are a lot of mid and large size economy grills in the Q price range. That said if these small to compact cookers fit your size requirements, they are fun and functional with an appealing, modern look.

Q grills have coated, cast aluminum housings, porcelain enameled cast iron grates, stainless steel burners on gas models, electric ignition, removable grease pans and most come with the obligatory heat indicator in the lid. The cast iron grates are split so one side may be removed and replaced with an optional cast iron griddle.

Gold Medal

Q 1000 and 1200 are the smallest Weber gas grills with 189 square inches of cook surface and a single 8,500 BTU stainless steel burner. These portables, originally called Baby Q, were a hit coming out of the gate. Like all Q series grills they have coated cast aluminum housing, porcelain-enamled cast iron grates, electric ignition, removable grease pans and glass re-inforced nylon frames. They use disposable 14.1 or 16.4 oz. LP cylinders. Optional 20 lb. LP tank adaptor kits are available.

As with all Weber grills, intelligent design coupled with quality construction produces an attractive cooker that works great. The heavy cast aluminum housing holds and distributes heat while the cast iron grates can do a decent job of searing. In 2014 Weber split the cooking grate to accomodate an optonal cast iron griddle on one side.

These small cookers make travel easy, but obviously limit the amount and size of what can be cooked. They may be used as a table top grill or mounted to a fold out stand with two legs, two wheels and tool hooks.

The Q 1000 is "titanium" color: a silvery grey cream, and has peizo electric ignition. For $40 more the Q 1200 offers battery powered ignition, fold out side tables, a lid heat indicater and your color choice of Titanium, Black, Blue, Fuchsia, Green, Orange, Purple and Red.

This portable grill is a master of design. It packs up small with the side tables folding into the grill body yet is large enough to cook up several steaks at once. It uses standard 14 or 16-ounce propane tanks (not included) and has an 189 square-inch porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate that makes it a big, little grill. Guide Review - Weber Q-1200 Portable Grill

This small member of the Q family is an excellently constructed little gas grill that gives you plenty of space and power for the size. What makes the Q grill work is the construction. With a cast aluminum body that holds in heat and a heavy porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate to transfer heat to the food this grill cooks like a full sized unit in a portable size.

The 189 square inches of cooking space is large enough to grill several steaks at once so you won't have to grill in shifts.

Great attention to detail has been paid on this grill. In fact, Weber spent 5 years developing this line of portable grills. All in all, if you are willing to pay the nearly $200 price tag for this portable you're going to get a really good grill and at the rate they are selling, I think this is going to be a product that will be around for a while.

Because of the heavy duty construction, this is a heavy little grill. While not suited for being carried long distances this is a perfect grill for trips to the beach or park. It is also a great grill for apartment dwellers who want a real gas grill but just don't have space for one.

This model of the Q-series grill is available in a number of colors.

Weber Q1200 – Grill Review

W hen you think grilling you think Weber Grills. That’s just a fact of life Jack. Weber has been the symbol of quality and dependable grills since 1952. The Weber Q1200 series of portable grills now comes in a rainbow of colors for you to choose from. Recently the Busted Wallet team was given the opportunity to review the sleek Black on Black Q1200 along with a stand to go with it which we’ve been vigorously testing over the last month and our stomachs cannot take anymore. So without further ado let the meat parade begin! I’ll be your Grand Marshall.

Assembly of the Q1200 from opening the box took me less than 20 minutes. I could easily shave that time down to 15 minutes if I became a pro grill assembler. Instructions provided were straight forward and you only need a screwdriver to slap this bad boy together, including the stand! All the pieces were light enough to put together all on my own.

Weber does not disappoint with the design and construction of the Q series of grills. You can tell this grill is made to last and Weber backs that up with their 5 year warranty which guarantees you against rust for five years. Most of the competition in this size of grill offers a 1-3 year warranty.

What’s really cool about the Q1200 is the seven color choices Weber offers. The colors offered are Green, Orange, Black, Purple, Blue, Fuchsia, and Titanium. These color options will allow you to subtly say to your fellow campers at your campground, “Yeah, I’ve got swagger. Yes…I…do. Now wear your envy and jealousy on your sleeve so I can bask in it as you walk by my campsite.” The one slight negative I do have to offer is that the shape of the grill is not very packing friendly. Weber could step up their game in that arena. If you camp like we do, every nook and cranny of you vehicle is crammed tight with gear so a more stackable shape of the grill would be nice.

The size of the grill fully open is 24.6″x40.9″x20.5″. The electronic ignition is an easy to use push button that fires the burner up easily. Also, the burner control allows you to dial in the precise level of heat your precious entree demands. The built-in thermometer is a really excellent feature along with the side fold out work tables which are upgrades over the Q1000. The nice thing about the Q series of Weber grills is that if the Q1000 or Q1200 is too small for your needs you can step up to the Q2000 or the big bad Q3200 grills to satisfy your needs.

Performance:

The Weber Q1200’s performance is quite remarkable compared to other portable propane grills I’ve used in the past. The 189 square inch cooking area is ample for a party of two or we even grilled enough dogs and brats up to the cottage for six people. The stainless steel burner is designed for even heat distribution as it’s configured in a loop around the grill box unlike most other grills that are configured in a straight line down the middle of the grill box. This is all great but can it sear? Yes it can! The porcelain enameled cast-iron grill grates retain heat well to enable you to get that picture perfect sear every time. We also could easily get the grill up to 500 degrees without issue. Now for the meat parade you’ve been waiting for.

Over the last month we grilled chicken breasts, LOTS of brats and hot dogs, burgers, polish sausage (said in a Chris Farley Chicago Bears accent), as well as pork tenderloin. This grill performs as well as some full size grills I have used so would I not only recommend this grill for camping I would use it if you have a small family. Our household only has two people in it and I would use this as our only grill without hesitation.

The Q1200 retails for $199.00 and if you want the portable stand it will set you back $69.99. This is a portable grill with the performance of a full sized grill. You can find more modestly priced portable grills but they will not perform like the Weber Q1200 and of course they won’t have the stylish color choices either. To summarize, this grill gets two thumbs up!

fyi, If you get the black colored Q1200 you won’t notice those pesky grease and sauce stains as much. A real nice grill for the dough though, have you tried the Q2000 or Q3200, how do they compare?

Nice review grill dude! A very nice grill for the money indeed, I agree. I have not tried the larger grills yet. The Q2000 has a slightly larger grill area than the Q1200 is the only difference I see. The Q3200 is larger still but has 2 burners instead of just one and a more robust grill stand you can get for it as well.

All that stuff and you never tested it on steaks? That is the acid test for any grill – can it properly sear the outside while leaving a desirably pink/red interior? Any grill can do chicken and brats, given enough time. Burgers are not an adequate substitute.

I just purchased the Q1200. I had some older green Coleman 16.4 oz propane canisters laying around. I made several attempts to connect one to the grill. Can’t do it – no room. The leg of the grill is squarely in the way. I ended up getting a couple of the Bernzomatic blue propane canisters. I wanted something portable for cooking a burger or steak on after a good motorcycle ride.

Is there any difference in the circumference of the green Bernzomatic canisters and the older green Coleman brands?

I have used propane cans from Ace Hardware, Coleman, and Bernzomatic on the Q1200. All are 16.4 ounce and 1.02 pound cans with no problem. They are all the same size. If you are using the longer propane canisters typically used for torches I can see that would not work or fit. I will say the Bernzomatic cans I’ve used are dark green in color not blue.

The Weber Gas Barbecue is portable so you can easily change its location in your yard or on your patio. Portability means you can take your Weber Gas Barbecue with you if you move. Liquid Propane (LP) gas supply is easy to use and gives you more cooking control than charcoal fuel.

Place one end of the axle on the block of wood (or other protected surface). Tap on one hubcap. Put one wheel on the axle, WEBER side toward the hubcap. Slide the axle through the frame. Add the other wheel, WEBER side out. Tap on the hubcap. Figure 1.

Step 4 Continue frame assembly You will need: caster frame, wheel frame, four 1/4-20 x 1/2 inch bolts, four nylon washers and a 7/16 inch wrench. Place the caster frame onto the tabs of the left frame with the dimple to the inside. Figure 3. Place the wheel frame onto the tabs of the right frame with the dimple to the inside.

Step 6 Insert casters You will need: frame assembly and two casters. Push the casters firmly into the inserts in the ends of the caster legs. Figure 5. Figure 5 Step 7 Add front panel You will need: front panel and two plastic buttons. Turn frame assembly right side up.

Bolt Nylon washer Figure 8 Your Weber Gas Barbecue burner assembly has been factory assembled, pressure and flame tested. As a safety precaution we recommend you check the burner alignment: a) Do the valves fit into the ends of the burners? Figure 9 (a).

Step 9 Install manifold bracket You will need: manifold bracket Hook the bracket onto the manifold at the center burner valve. Place your hand underneath the bracket. Lift the manifold, bracket and cooking box slightly and hook the tab of the bracket onto the frame brace. Figure 10. Frame brace Figure 10 Step 10.

Step 11 Add fuel scale assembly You will need: fuel scale assembly, two 1/4-20 wing nuts and two nylon washers. Slip the bolts on the back of the fuel scale assembly through the two small holes in the tank panel. Make sure indicator rod of fuel scale is on the left side of the wheel frame.

If the tank manufacturer has not resolved the issue to your satisfaction, then call Weber-Stephen Products Co., Customer Service Center. To fill, take the LP tank and filler adapter to an RV center or look gas-propane in the phone book for other sources of LP gas.

Step 15 Check that all burner valves are off You will need: one burner control knob. Valves are shipped in the OFF position, but you should check to be sure. Put the knob on each valve. Check by pushing down and turning clockwise. If they do not turn, they are off, proceed to the next step.

Note - All factory made connections have been thoroughly checked for gas leaks. The burners have been flame tested. As a safety precaution you should recheck all fittings for leaks before using your Weber Gas Barbecue. Shipping and handling may have loosened or damaged a gas fitting.

Step 18 Install Flavorizer Bars and Cooking Grates You will need: five long Flavorizer Bars, eight short Flavorizer Bars and two cooking grates. Set the long Flavorizer Bars side to side in the lower position, then set the short Flavorizer Bars front to back in the upper position in the cooking box.

Step 20 Install Lid You will need: lid, two hinge pins and two hair pin cotters. Set the lid in place. Align the hinges at the rear of the barbecue. Insert hinge pins from the outside. Insert hair pin cotters into the small holes in the hinge pins. Figure 26. Hair pin cotter Hinge pin Figure 26.

Step 22 Install swing table You will need: swing table end bracket, two 10-24 hex nuts, two 10-24 x 1 3/4 inch machine screws, slide bar assembly, swing table, four nylon washers, screwdriver and pliers. Allow the slide bar to hang down. Push the support rod into the lower support bracket.

Insert one end of the Weber Warm-Up Basket into the hole in the right end of the lid and the other end into the slot in the left end of the lid. Figure 32 (a).

You can adjust the FRONT, CENTER and BACK burners as desired. The control settings High (H), Medium (M), Low (L), or Off (O) are described in your Weber cookbook. The cookbook uses these notations to describe the settings of the FRONT, CENTER, and BACK burners. For example, to.

Refilling the LP tank We recommend that you refill before the scale indicator reaches "E". Note - If you run out of fuel, check the indicator setting and/or adjust the fuel scale indicator setting with the scale setting wing nut while the tank is empty so you do not run out again.

Liquid Propane (LP) Tank(s) The LP tank and connections supplied with your Weber Gas Barbecue have been designed and tested to meet government, American Gas Association and Underwriters Laboratories requirements. Replacement LP tanks supplied by Weber satisfy the requirements.

General Maintenance Weber Spider Stopper Guards Your Weber Gas Barbecue, as well as any outdoor gas appliance, is a target for spiders and other insects. They can nest in the venturi section of the burner tubes. This blocks the normal gas flow, and can cause the gas to flow back out of the air shutter.

d) Unlatch the Spider Stopper Guards and remove. Figure 13. Figure 13 e) Remove the manifold bracket and unscrew the two wing nuts that hold the manifold to the cooking box. Pull the manifold and valve assembly out of the burners and carefully set it down.

Reinstall the Spider Stopper Guards. Slightly rotate the Spider Stopper Guards so that the seams are in line with the Venturi fins. There should be no gaps in the seams or in the fit around the burners and valves. Figure 18. Venturi fin Check fit around burner Figure 18.
