Weber Q2200 Review – Another Winner from Weber

The Weber Q2200 is the replacement for the previous model, the Q220. This grill is sort of a bridge between the very compact and portable Q1200 and the larger, cart-mounted Q3200. Let’s see what this new model has to offer compared to the previous model.

Weber Q2200 Review – First Look

The unit still features a 12,000 BTU single D-shaped burner to heat up the 280 square inch cooking area (compared to the 189 square-inch offered by the Q120). So, this is a grill that can accommodate grilling for 4+ people, and that’s who I would recommended it for. If you only need to grill for 2-4 people, you should be fine with the smaller model, and save a bit on gas at the same time.

You still get the same high quality porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates, although it is now a split grid. This offers you two new advantages: first, it makes the grid easier to clean, especially if you only use one half of it. Second, you can now also use a grate on one side and a griddle on the other. This is a smart design decision by Weber.

The body and lid offers a sturdy cast aluminum construction. The unit comes virtually fully assembled in the box, and only minor assembly is left which can be done in no time at all.

The Weber Q2200 gas grill is fired up by an electronic starter, and you get a battery in the box courtesy of Weber to get you off to a flying start. Weber has retained the thermometer in the lid, as well as the handy fold-out side tables. They’re done away with the tool hooks of the previous model though for reason which are not entirely clear. The tables fold in under the lid, so keep the cardboard that the unit ships with to prevent scratching the grates when you fold them for storage or travel.

The manual recommends 14.1oz or 16.4 oz cylinders for this grill. You can, however, with the purchase of a separate Q Adapter Hose, connect the grill to a 20lb tank. This is nice for home use, while the canisters are handy for when you want the grill to travel with you. This grill also fits on the previous generation Weber Q carts.

Weber is famed for its even cooking, and the Q2200 delivers well on that for the most part. There are a few hot spots here and there, but nothing too serious. The single burner does limit you a little, especially with regards to indirect cooking.

The Weber Q2200 grill heats up nice and quickly, and has no trouble reaching 550 degrees. It holds the temperature well if you don’t open and close the lid too often. The domed lid allows a fair amount of space for larger roasts and whole birds, but even at its lowest setting it is still pretty hot. Not really ideal for large roasts that need slow, indirect heat.

Still, you’ll have no trouble getting a nice sear on your steaks and it will handle most other foods you throw at it. This is a great grill to cook on.

The Q2200 is quite a bit larger than the Q1200, so be aware that it takes up a good amount of space in a vehicle. I’d probably go as far as to say this grill is about at the limit of portable size. Any larger and it would have become somewhat of a space hog or just a hassle to carry around. Transporting the grates separately makes the grill a lot lighter and easier to carry.

Final Words – Weber Q2200 Gas Grill

The Q2200 is a great medium-sized grill for small families. It is still portable and still delivers a great grilling experience. In comparison to the previous model, Weber has added a split grate, but did away with the tool hooks on the folding tables.

If you already have a Q220 in good working order, the Q2200 is not going to offer you enough to justify purchasing it as a replacement. If you’re looking for a new portable grill to service a family of 4 – 6, this grill is a great choice.

Great grill in a small package.

I have had Weber's for many years and this is the best selection I made. I rearranged my deck and needed a smaller grill and this is perfect. I can still get plenty of chicken and steak on it. It heats up fast and cooks great. I love it.

The Pros and Cons

The Bottom Line

The Weber Q 2200 is the cornerstone of Weber's popular Q line of portable grills. However, at 42 pounds and requiring two hands to carry, this isn't the most portable of portable gas grills. What it is is a good gas grill that just happens to be small enough to be perfect for the balcony or the trunk. The single burner design doesn't give a great deal of versatility, but with 280 square inches of cooking this little grill can cook up burgers, steaks, and chicken for several people.

Efficient design and Weber quality make this a good investment.

Expert Review - Weber Q 2200

In the line of truly portable grills that you can fold up and carry away, this is about as big as you can get. With 280 square inches of grilling space, you should be able to do a lot with this unit.

The hood gives enough space to grill a whole chicken or large roast, so it's as versatile as a single burner can be.

The shell is cast aluminum and the cooking grates are actually heavy porcelain coated cast iron. This holds heat and makes this better than most portable gas grills which tend to be underpowered.

The Q isn't as powerful as a standard gas grill, but it is certainly worth looking at in the portable category. Add in the optional griddle section and this adds even more versatility and not just for cooking pancakes. The griddle can be used as a searing plate as well.

All in all, if you are willing to pay for this portable and don't need it to be very portable, then this is a good choice. At 42 pounds, it is pretty heavy. Add fuel, tools and food and you won't want to take this far, but if you want to grill over gas in a unit that fits in most any car trunk then this is a great choice.

Nice little grill

Design flaw located controls below right carry handle rendering rt handle completely useless, poor planning considering weight of item.

I love that the burner Q is a tube and does not collect drippings the way other portable size grill burner plates do. The sloped bottom and drippings pan prevents drippings from pooling and makes clean up easy.

Great grill

As a novice griller, this is a great first grill to own. It heats up quickly, provided nice "outdoor" flavor to food and was pretty easy to clean up. Also, it looks particularly good in the "limited edition" red! It's a great size for 1-3 people and fits well on a small patio. The only challenge we had was determining if the flame was on in bright sunlight. A minor issue. This grill is worth the money!

Best Grill Ever

This grill will make you a better cook, perfect sear marks every time. Very even heat, compact and easy to use. This size is perfect for 2 people. We grill veg, starch and meat in shifts and are able to eat while hot. I love this grill, worth every penny. Do yourself a favor and just buy one of these. you will never regret it. If you are a family, I suggest a larger size but same exact model. We got rid of the extra large super snazzy Brinkmann with all the bells and whistles and never want to look back. This grill is a gem!

Guide Review - Weber Q-1200 Portable Grill

This small member of the Q family is an excellently constructed little gas grill that gives you plenty of space and power for the size. What makes the Q grill work is the construction. With a cast aluminum body that holds in heat and a heavy porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate to transfer heat to the food this grill cooks like a full sized unit in a portable size.

The 189 square inches of cooking space is large enough to grill several steaks at once so you won't have to grill in shifts.

Great attention to detail has been paid on this grill. In fact, Weber spent 5 years developing this line of portable grills. All in all, if you are willing to pay the nearly $200 price tag for this portable you're going to get a really good grill and at the rate they are selling, I think this is going to be a product that will be around for a while.

Because of the heavy duty construction, this is a heavy little grill. While not suited for being carried long distances this is a perfect grill for trips to the beach or park. It is also a great grill for apartment dwellers who want a real gas grill but just don't have space for one.

This model of the Q-series grill is available in a number of colors.
