Guide Review - Weber Master Touch 22 Charcoal Grill

Years ago the pinnacle of the Weber Charcoal Grill line was the Master Touch. Then they discontinued it in favor of the table mounted performer grill. Now, for 2015, Weber has reintroduced the Master Touch Charcoal Grill.

Basically, the standard three-legged charcoal grill loaded with all the extras Weber can fit into a charcoal grill. At around $200USD this grill fills out the Weber line sitting between the 22-Inch Original Kettle Gold ($150USD) without the accessories and the Performer Silver ($250) that comes on a cart with a fold down side table.

What this charcoal grill offers in addition to their deluxe charcoal grill features (large ash catcher and built in thermometer) is a roll away lid holder so that the lid can be simply slid off the grill and Weber's Gourmet BBQ System cooking grates. This steel plated, hinged grate has a removable center section that can be replaced with a wide range of accessories to give the grill greater versatility. From the pizza stone to an Ebelskiver pan. Of course, all these accessories are sold separately and range in price from $35USD to $55USD.

The real reason to choose this version of the ever popular Weber Kettle Charcoal Grill is for all the accessories. If you are not interested in doing anything more than basic grilling, can buy your own pizza stone, and perhaps experiment with a little smoking, then I would recommend buying a different model. If, however, all that versatility sounds intriguing, then this is probably the perfect charcoal grill for you.

The return of the Weber MasterTouch! Full review and side-by-side comparison.

The Weber MasterTouch (now available on Amazon) has long been coveted for its amazing versatility and the fact that it came straight out of the box jam packed with features. First introduced back in 1992, this premium grill included a lid bale, a lid mounted & removable thermometer, charcoal baskets, condiment rack and a tool holder. To this day this is a highly prized kettle (in any color!) for many grilling enthusiasts.

For reasons unknown, the MasterTouch was pulled from the Weber production line in 1999 leaving the One-Touch Gold (OTG) as the flagship 22.5″ kettle in the Weber fleet. But fear not kettleheads, that has changed in a big way!

Jump forward to late 2014/2015, and after years of absence from the charcoal lineup Weber has re-launched the latest reincarnation of the MasterTouch! Packed with new features and design tweaks, the new MT is bound to live up to the high expectations of loyal Weber fanatics.

Today we will take an in-depth look at both old and new Weber MasterTouch grills to see exactly what all the buzz is about!

One of the first things you notice about the new MasterTouch is how tall it stands. Weber has raised the height of the kettle by 3″ providing for a more comfortable grilling experience. These extra few inches do make a noticeable difference but there is a potential downside here as well. I find the added weight of the gourmet system grates, warming rack, and charcoal baskets – combined with the extra 3″ height – give an ever so slightly top heavy feel to the kettle. When sitting in normal cooking position this poses no problem at all, the kettle stands very well planted with no wobbly legs or anything like that. Where you do notice the difference is when you grab it by the handle and attempt to roll or move the grill. The center of gravity has changed so the weight balance doesn’t feel the same as it used to. Not a big deal by any means, but more than likely something you will notice! Just be conscious of this while attempting to move it and you’ll be just fine!

The two photos above illustrate the standard components and accessories that were included with each Master-Touch. The now included Gourmet System grate is substantially heaver than the old standard hinged grate and opens up a ton of options in terms of grilling options and accessories. Want to use a griddle? maybe a wok? No problem!

Gone is the removable lid mounted thermometer of the original MT. This has now been replaced with Weber’s standard thermometer found on both current model kettles and WSM’s. Since the original design the handle orientation has changed as well as the handle itself which now is a classy looking Master-Touch specific version.

The new bowl handle with built in tool hooks is excellent and I love the fact that they went to a true black plastic rather than the dark grey or charcoal of recent years. It truly is a sharp looking grill and you can tell that they have really paid attention to the fine details. That being said we would be foolish to ignore the beauty of the classic wooden Weber handle. It just looks warm and inviting and provides excellent insulating properties in comparison to the plastic versions.

The lid handle is a major change for the late 2014/2015 model lineup. This new design incorporates a metal heat shield and is bolted to the lid using special hardware rather than the welded tab handles of old. This has stirred up additional controversy with some long time weber fans and has prompted customizations to the new design such as removing the heat shield for an old school look.

Another substantial change to the classic Weber design for 2015 is the ash-catcher assembly. Above you can see the new style including a rounded pan bottom and new pinch style handle release. A clean looking beveled edge has also been added to the bottom of the ash catcher support ring. This seems to strengthen the ring and should provide a bit more resistance against accidental bends. Some users have noted that the new style bucket takes a little getting used to and I would have to agree. It functions perfectly so it’s certainly not a design issue – I think it’s more of a case of an old (trained!) dog learning new tricks 🙂

In my opinion the kettle has a slightly more modern look with these new tweaks but still stays true to the original design. Well done Weber!

Beyond the new height of the legs, another simple yet well needed change is the inclusion of a spring clip radio button to hold them into the sockets. These work great and based on the design are essentially fail-proof. The legs themselves seemed VERY snug in the sockets as well – absolutely zero wobble going on.

Next up are the wheels. Weber decided to upgrade the new MT with a set of 7.5″ versions – a full 2″ taller that the originals. These really do roll smoothly and are another welcomed change in my mind. One thing I will note is that once the wheel is installed and the cover snapped in place you are more than likely not going to get it off without some sort of damage to the hubcap. I tried to do just that and even while being as careful as possible managed to chip one of the wheel caps… thankfully they are readily available and quite inexpensive.

The classic Master-Touch was a hit for a good reason. It had everything needed to do some serious grilling right out of the box and of course it was built to last! Well Weber fans… after spending some time detailing this model I’m very happy to say that the new Master-Touch will NOT disappoint. This is a top-tier cooker in every respect and proudly carries on the tradition of the original. You can buy with confidence in knowing that this is probably THE best stand alone charcoal grill on the planet!

Now for the next big question… WHEN DO WE GET SOME MORE COLORS! – Possible clues may just lie HERE!

Here in the UK the MT 2014 I have seems to be the old kind of style ash catcher, not a pinched design.

Maybe Weber had some of the old uns about in stock.

Everything else is the same on the new model.

I have the MT here in the UK (bought it around April 2017) and everything is as it appears in this article other than the warming rack – which does not appear to come as standard for UK Master Touch Webers. Other than that, a fabulous BBQ. 😉

I have a 13 yo Genesis Gold that just won’t die, even the starter (original) still works on first push. I will not buy another till this one stops working. But a Kettle grill will let my frugal self buy a new grill without betraying myself. LOL

What is the Weber Master-Touch?

The Weber MasterTouch is a kettle-style barbecue with some nice modern touches. There are special charcoal baskets at each side for indirect cooking and a grille that folds up to offer access to them.

You can also lift up a circle in the centre of the grille and add foodie accessories such as a wok, griddle, pizza stone, poultry roaster, Dutch oven or sear grate.

Weber Master-Touch – Design and Features

The Master-Touch builds on the success of Weber’s Original Kettle barbecue, which offered features such as a porcelain-enamelled bowl and lid with a 10-year guarantee, lid-mounted temperature gauge and stainless steel One-Touch cleaning system.

The Master-Touch adds to the mix an improved removable ash catcher that’s rust-proof, two baskets for holding charcoal, a charcoal measuring cup and an integrated tool holder.

The model is often called the Master-Touch GBS. The Gourmet BBQ System grate allows you to lift out a section in the centre of the unit to add various foodie accessories such as wok, griddle, pizza stone, poultry roaster, Dutch oven and sear grate. This lets you cook an incredibly wide range of dishes.

The lid has a weatherproof handle with protective heat shield and a rust-proof aluminium vent to control temperature and airflow for perfect barbecuing. The bowl is also fitted with a weatherproof handle and a lid holder, keeping the hot lid safely out of the way, or offering the ability to use it as a windbreak.

Wheels make it extra easy to move the barbecue around single-handed, while the ash can is simple to remove for quick cleaning.

Weber Master-Touch – What’s it like to use?

Assembling the Master-Touch took about half an hour and required the use of a hammer, a screwdriver and a spanner. On the whole, it went well. However, forgetting a wheel resulted in us having to remove a fitting that was designed to lock tight for eternity. Much monkeying around was required, but we succeeded.

Build quality is pretty decent, then. Shame about the instructions, which only tell you what to do, without warning about what not to do. The result was a sturdy barbecue, but we soon realised that the wheels should have been opposite the handle. A quick mistake to rectify, but by this time we were spent, and so left them as they were.

The temperature gauge in the lid and air vents top and bottom are useful. At the top, the large vents have an insulated handle, so it isn’t burning hot to the touch – a welcome addition. Down below, the vents are controlled with a big handle. Below this is a removable ash collector for easy emptying; simply squeeze the handles together and pop it off.

As already mentioned, a loop at the rear forms a hold for the lid when it’s off – and it doubles as a wind shield – but we would have preferred a hinged lid all the same.

Lighting was where the Master-Touch fell down, though. We lit it as we would any other barbecue, but it just wouldn’t play. We experimented with the air vents top and bottom, but we only ever achieved warm, black coals, rather than proper flames followed by hot white coals.

Having tested other Weber kettle barbecues, we concluded that teaming this unit with the company’s chimney starter would have got this barbecue going great guns.

However, with no chimney starter to hand, we tried the next best thing: a bag of instant light charcoal. This gave a much better result and let us test the barbecue to its full potential.

We cooked bangers and burgers directly and found that the cooking was steady and fairly even. Burgers were cooked through nicely and moist in the middle; bangers were nicely browned but not frazzled.

We didn’t have any GBS accessories to try in the middle of the Weber, but it’s clear that they’d make the Master-Touch more versatile as an outdoor cooker.

Should I buy the Weber Master-Touch?

Maybe. We found it difficult to light, but otherwise it’s a decent barbecue. However, the Char-Broil Kettleman performed better and is available for less money.

45 Day No Hassle Returns

We want you to love what you buy! But if you don’t, we offer a simple “No Hassle Returns” policy. We allow you to return all new, unused, unassembled, and resalable items in their original packaging within 45 days of delivery for a refund (minus the original and return shipping costs incurred by BBQGuys.com). Naturally, if your return is because of our error, you are not responsible for any shipping costs.

• If your return request is due to product defect or damage, we will first work with you to get the product repaired. If repair is not possible, then we’ll work with you to get it replaced.
• If your return will be coming back via freight truck, we will require you to provide us a photo before your return will be authorized. This can be as simple as a cell phone pic! We just need a “before” picture in case there is any damage to the item on its way back to us.
• To expedite the returns process, before shipping the item(s) back, make sure they are clean, the packaging is sufficient to prevent damage, and (if necessary) you note all defects along with the photos taken.

Important information about refund eligibility:

Bursting with all the features of the best-selling One-Touch® Premium, the three significant additions the MasterTouch® offers are the Tuck-Away® lid holder, Gourmet BBQ System® grate coming as standard and a choice of four vibrant kettle colours in addition to the traditional black.

The Gourmet BBQ System® grate has a removable 30cm centrepiece to allow you to attach a number of compatible accessories including sear grate, wok, pizza stone and griddle (all sold separately) offering you no end of cooking possibilities.

Besides the versatility the 57cm Gourmet BBQ System® grate offers, it also has an impressive 2552cm² total cooking area which is more than sufficient for a family or group of friends to enjoy a hassle-free garden party or all-year round alfresco get-together.

Regardless of whether you choose crimson, spring green, slate blue, smoke grey or black, all the bowls and lids throughout the colour range are porcelain-enamelled to ensure protection against fire, rust and the elements and are all made to last which is why Weber® confidently offer a 10-year warranty on them.

In addition to a weather-proof handle with protective heat shield the MasterTouch® lid also contains an integrated thermometer and a rust-proof aluminium vent to control temperature and air flow for perfect barbecuing.

Like the lid, the bowl of the MasterTouch® is also fitted with a weather-proof handle comprising two useful integrated tool holders as well as a Tuck-Away® lid holder which acts as both a convenient rack to retain the lid as you tend to your food and a handy windbreak.

As with the One-Touch® Premium, the Weber® MasterTouch® boasts the more advanced stainless steel One-Touch® cleaning system and removable ash catcher to make cleaning and maintenance of the kettle even easier and more effective.

Simply by sliding the lever protruding from the One-Touch® cleaning system three angled blades attached internally to the base of the kettle rotate to ‘sweep’ the ash through the drainage holes into the rust-proof removable ash catching bucket saving time and preventing mess.

At the bottom of the stand sits a convenient triangular shelf for placing food or accessories as well as two logoed all weather wheels to assist with mobility of the barbecue.

Included with the MasterTouch® barbecue is a pair of char-baskets® to help with the positioning of the briquettes for indirect cooking as well as one large disposable drip tray.

As well as the charcoal baskets, the MasterTouch® also comes with a useful charcoal measuring cup which will help keep the amount of briquettes used consistent and in-turn the temperature controlled, meaning perfectly cooked food every time!

This has a large cooking area and easy to use. The results have been great with possibility the best steaks ever. My husband has a tendency to keep poking the food so the fact that you cook with the lid closed leaves him a bit frustrated.

I am reviewing this on behalf of my mother, for whom I purchased this product. I am a grilling and smoking enthusiast, and as such was responsible for all of the outdoor cooking in my house. After moving out last year and into the big world by myself, it was left to my parents to reclaim the outdoor cooking mantle, so we set about finding a product that could help them cook outdoors with quality, ease, and simplicity. I cannot recommend any other brand or style than the Weber Kettle, simply for its build quality, reliability, durability, and ease of use. My mother is in love with her newest gadget, and has already mastered indirect cooking and control of the vents, using the grill to cook up fish, chicken, prawns, burgers, sausages, and veggies! Riverside's customer service was excellent, and the item arrived the following day after ordering with free delivery; they even threw in a free griddle pan!
