The 8 Best Gas Grills To Buy In 2017

No doubt, all of us like to host and attend the BBQ parties and we already know that the quality of food never comes from the flimsy grills. So, everyone wants a grill that fits the individual budget and cooking needs. On that note, we have compiled a list of best gas grills of 2017 that are suitable for most bbq lovers. This list is gathered over multiple weeks of hard work involving self-testing in our backyards and detailed reviewing.

    Best Overall: Weber Spirit E310

Coming back with a recent redesign, the Weber Spirit E 310 NG comes packed with all the amenities that can get you grilling in no time. This grill offers a 32,000 BTU per hour input, divided between 3 high-grade stainless steel burners over a combined cooking area of 529 square inches. From the side burner to the extendible stainless steel workspace (with 6 hooks), the utilization of space is improved and the comfort is greatly increased.

This grill features a minimalistic design that offers everything, the bigger grills offer. A deep black and stainless-steel theme signals sophistication and elegance. Unlike its predecessor, this design features a user-friendly front end control knob panel for optimal user convenience. Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates provide superior heat retention while the durable porcelain-enameled shroud resists to fade, peel or rust.

It has an electric crossover ignition system that ignites the three burners almost instantly and porcelain-enameled flavorizer bars smoke and sizzle when cooking juices drip down on them which add flavor to the meal. Moreover, center mounted thermometer is installed on the hood for perfect temperature feedback whereas fuel gauge is installed to keep you updated about the fuel quantity every time. Lastly, I found the Spirit E310 to be easy to set up while being easily maintainable.

Best For Large Party Eat-Outs: Char-Broil Performance 650

Are you looking for a gas grill that can accommodate a large party eat outs easily? If yes, then you may know that these types of giant-sized grills are quite expensive, but Char-Broil ruled-out this phenomenon by launching the low priced Performance 650 6-Burner grill.

This new grill offers ample 650 square inches of the primary cooking area (which is sufficient to cook 25 steaks or 35 burgers) and 280 square inches of the secondary cooking area. Its main burner can exhaust 65,000 BTU while a side burner is capable of delivering 10,000 BTU.

Performance 650 uses propane tank as a fuel source and there is a fuel gauge monitor installed in it that measures the remaining fuel in the tank. The design of this grill is like its predecessor (Performance 475) but the power to size ratio is improvised which was not accurate in the previous model. Moreover, the quality of cooking grates is same as it was in performance 475 that makes it capable of retaining heat and dispensing it quickly. So, overall the upgraded model is much better than its earlier one and can efficiently handle the large party eat-outs.

Best Luxury Gas Grill: Weber Genesis II LX S-340

Weber recently introduced its LX (luxurious model) which has all those features that are not common in genesis ||. It has an enormous cooking space of 513 square inches and tuck-away warming rack (foldable) is of 156 square inches. There are three main stainless steel burners which provide 43,500 BTU-per-hour input however side burner provides 12,000 BTU-per-hour input. These burners provide even heat distribution on the cooking grates so that the food is evenly cooked.

One can easily prepare side dishes and sauces with the help of flush-mounted side burner. The Cooking grates of this grill are made of high-quality 7mm stainless steel to last for a long time. Additionally, it is equipped with enclosed cabinet for storage and one can use easily foldable side tables to hang cooking utensils within arm’s reach. The handle light of this is quite powerful as it illuminates the entire cooking area and when the lid gets closed, the light automatically turns off to save energy.

The grease management system included in this grill is quite robust as it saves from dangerous flare-ups and removes grease easily. Its infinity ignition system makes sure that burners ignite smoothly once the knob is turned. Moreover, the flavorizer bars catch drippings that sizzle and smoke, which add irresistible smoky flavor to food which everyone love. Though it is expensive, but luxury comes with the price. Isn’t It?

    Best Tru-Infrared Grill: Char-Broil Performance 450

Those who love tru-infrared cooked food know that tru-infrared grills are not economical grills however Char-broil has introduced its new infrared grill which is quite affordable, keeps the food quality at its best and comes with the small size.

Let’s look at its design and features. With its three high-power burners and 450 square inches cooking area, it has given a tough competition to the grills of the same lineup. Its main burner is capable of delivering 30,000 BTUs whereas its flush lidded side burner offers additional 10,000 BTUs which are quite enough to cook good amount of food instantly. Furthermore, this grill offers 180 inches of the secondary cooking area along with ample side shelves that give enough space to cook delicious food.

Its convenient cart design (gives portability), Surefire electronic ignition system (provides quick spark), durable porcelain coated grates and temperature gauge are one of its additional exciting features.

Best High-End: Weber Genesis II E-310

Weber Genesis II series is one of the most durable and popular series in the weber’s line up. This series is popular for its sturdy design and grilling system. Although all the genesis grills are good but E-310 performed exceptionally well, so we decided to test this model and below is what we found.

Weber Genesis II E-310 comes with 3 stainless steel burners which produce 37,500 BTUs. It has 669 sq. in. of total cooking area that provides ample space in which 513 sq. in. is of primary cooking area and 156 sq. in. is of warming rack area.

Folding side shelves with tool hooks, open cart design, centre mounted thermometer, stainless steel heat deflectors, liquid propane fuel gauge, 168 lbs. of weight (helps in portability), stainless steel flovorizer bars, porcelain-enamelled cast iron cooking grates and 4 heavy duty wheels (in which 2 front wheels are lockable) are some of its exciting features.

Best Portable Grill: Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Gourmet

Who doesn’t love easier and faster cooking? And what about portability?

By keeping these questions in mind, Cuisinart launched its grill that gathered a lot of satisfied customers and upon testing this product, we have found following results:

This grill doesn’t offer those features which fully functional grills offer. The reason behind this is that the manufacturer of this grill has designed it to be the most portable grill in the market so, they have sacrificed some advance level features for the sake of portability.

It just offers 145 square inches of cooking space which is no doubt too small, but you can still cook few burgers or at least 8 steaks at a time. As it weighs only 13 pounds, you can carry it along with you wherever you want and don’t get confused about its build quality because this grill is meant to survive for years, not for few months. Although 5500 BTU is not what we usually get from high-end grills but quick startup, quality cooking grates, folding legs and most importantly the price tag are what that make this grill one of the best grills in the market.

    Best Value Winner: Charbroil 280

The Charbroil Classic 280 grill is something that most homeowners have grown to be fond off due to its simplicity which brings it close to practicality. This grill has all the performance to fulfill moderate barbecuing needs as it features 2 burners that produce a combined total of 26,500 BTU, which is spread over an area of 280 square inches of cooking space (on porcelain-coated wire grates).

Piezo Ignition System (for a reliable spark with every push of the button), front placed control panel (provides ease of use for the user), porcelain-coated steel lid (designed to withstand the extreme cooking temperatures), metal side shelves (that offer extra work-space with built-in handles and tool hooks), porcelain-coated grates (to prevent food sticking and are easy to clean) and two 6 inches plastic wheels (that provide ease while maneuvering) are some of the attractive features of this grill.

In our test, we have found this grill better than other low-priced grills which couldn’t even reach optimal temperature. Although, there is no built-in thermometer to measure the internal food temperature and it has fixed side shelves but classic 280 still manages to do the job, ideally for the occasional grilling. So, for the price it definitely gives value accordingly.

Best For Small Spaces: Weber Q2200

Weber Q2200 is the upgraded model of Q220 which was considered one of the best propane grills. The recent upgrade to Q2200 has awarded it some remarkable changes and improved the build quality. With just 1 touch start option, 12000 BTU power single burner and a large hood to host a full-size chicken or a large size roast, it just delivers a lot as being a portable grill.

On the other hand, it weighs 42 pounds which nobody can carry alone, but it also provides the ample 280 square inches cooking surface which no doubt is too much for a portable grill. Moreover, two foldable work surfaces, adjustable heat option, mounted heat thermometer and optional griddle section are those features which made its way to our list of top liquid propane grills.

So people who are looking for the grill that is perfect for tailgating, portable enough to fit in tight space or best for camping can consider this grill.

Your website really helped me alot. Thank you v much

    You are welcome!

I was looking at some cheaper but best BBQ grills and ended up with Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Patio Bistro. Glad I did. This unit is well made, quick ignition system with up to 320 square inches grilling surface.

The grill comes with the well-written set of instructions. The hardware is all packaged in such a way that you open the plastic bag for the parts you need – its all numbered, nice.

The Grill ignites quickly and is small enough to fit in the small spaces.

I must admit that i found your website’s reviews are the only genuine ones among many other similar gas grill reviews websites.

Lastly, I am truly thankful for providing such unbiased and detailed information in this article.

I was looking for a best outdoor grill to fulfill my BBQ with a tight budget. A quick search took me to your site where I was able to skim & scan between the products you listed on the page. You did a fantastic job for each of the product reviews because the information is precise and up to date.

After spending just 10 minutes, I was able to decide that which grill suits me and which one to buy actually. I found Dyna-Glo Black Premium to be my next grill for BBQ. Thanks for your help.

    You are always welcome 🙂

    Rita Nielsen says

I am not sure why you don’t have at least one of the Broil King Grills listed. All the other comparative lists include at least one of the models.

We would love to test Broil King Grills soon and if we find one worth adding to our list, we will add it. Thanks for your input.

Was out looking for a new weber grill for my son in law. I was totally bummed out about weber being made in China. What a shame. Definitely looking for a different brand now, that is USA made.

I understand your concern but there are still many quality weber grills which are manufactured in the USA like Weber Genesis E-330.

Why isn’t Napoleon represented on your list? Were they just not tested?

This month 2 Napoleon grills made to our top 10 list. You can read their reviews on this website.

    Weber Summit Charcoal Grill

If you look at most any list of the best charcoal grills on the market you will typically find towards the top of the list, a Weber kettle grill, and a kamado grill. The Weber representing the more reasonably priced product and the kamado, the most capable. Weber is, of course, recognized as the largest and most well-known charcoal grill manufacturer in the world. In some places, Weber literally means grill, much like Kleenex means tissue.

The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill is their entry into the world of kamado grills, but with a distinctly Weber approach. This cooker combines the grilling capabilities of a very large kettle grill with the smoking power of the ever popular Weber Smokey Mountain, and it does it with all the bells and whistles that can be added. It also does it at what would appear to be a ridiculous price, starting at $1,500USD. With the features and the size, the Weber Summit is comparably priced, but without the ceramic shell, the question is, is it worth the price?

    • Equally excellent grill and smoker
    • Fantastic cooking abilities
    • Easy ash removal and cleaning
    • Gas powered charcoal ignition system

    • 452 square inches of total grilling/smoking area
    • Porcelain-enameled, air-insulated, double-walled bowl and lid
    • Gas powered charcoal ignition system
    • Two position fuel grate
    • Stainless steel Gourmet BBQ System cooking grates
    • Stainless steel vents and diffuser plate
    • Large ash catcher with easy clean out system
    • Hinged lid assembly
    • Total weight is 111 pounds
    • Stainless steel handles and hardware
    • Made in the USA

Guide Review - Weber Summit Charcoal Grill

With a starting price of $1,500USD and a table mounted version well over $2,000USD the obvious question about the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill is, is it worth the price?

One argument is that for less than half the money of the base unit a person could get a fully feature Weber Performer Grill and the largest of the Weber Smokey Mountain Smokers. Another argument is that for this price one could purchase a very good kamado grill with a table, albeit a small table. So why buy the Weber Summit?

The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill is a metal, kamado style grill and smoker. Instead of the traditional ceramic body, this unit has an 'air insulated' body, meaning there is an inner and outer body that is separated by a sealed space that promises the same heat retention. Before anyone tries to argue that this won't work, let me assure you that it does. This unit can easily hold low and slow smoking temperatures for well over 10 hours without refueling. Depending on the charcoal and how the fire is built it can go even longer. The design is highly efficient and as a smoker, it has the space (452 square inches) and smoke production capabilities of Weber's best smokers.

And then there are the features. The typical Weber kettle uses a lot of plated steel and aluminum parts that while durable, are a lower grade of quality. The Weber Summit has the same porcelain coated body, but all the parts, including the cooking grates, vents, and heat diffuser are stainless steel.

This improves the appearance as much as the quality and are part of the reason for the high price. Add in the gas powered charcoal ignition system and this unit has everything to get it fired up, keep it going, and be easily cleaned.

This charcoal grill and smoker also offers a hinged and spring loaded lid that is easy to lift (though making a rotisserie kit impossible) and Weber's Gourmet BBQ System cooking grates. This stainless steel, hinged grate has a removable center section that can be replaced with a wide range of accessories to give the grill greater versatility. From the pizza stone to an Ebelskiver pan. Of course, all these accessories are sold separately and range in price from $35USD to $55USD.

This is a kamado grill. It can do anything that most any kamado grill does with the addition of a premium cooking space (the typical kamado is much smaller and to get this size requires a pretty hefty downpayment).

It is excellently constructed and does everything it promises. While there is a small learning curve, it is very small and firing it up a couple of times is sufficient training. Personally, I don't find this unit to be as attractive as most of the kamado grills in this price range, but that is a matter of taste.

Ultimately, this is a bit of an aspirational product and Weber knows it. This cooker is not going to be sold in your local hardware store or in the more general online retailers. It is a specialty market item for people who have the money, like the Weber brand, and want something that can do everything. It is not a luxury item in appearance, but it is a luxury item in capability and capacity. It can grill steaks at the same high temperatures as a kamado and quickly be dialed down to a low temperature to smoke a couple of briskets. It promises to do it all and for the most part, it delievers.

    Compare Weber Q Grill Models

If you are shopping for a new portable grill and haven’t heard of the Weber Q grill, let me tell you that you really should give this series a look.

The Weber Q Series is easily one of my favorite portable grills. These grills are well-built, sturdy, and known to be high quality when it comes to cooking and keeping clean. Just like any other Weber grill.

Today I want to compare all the models you can choose from in the Weber Q Series. Below is a comparison table of all current Weber Q models, which includes liquid propane, natural gas and electric models. Below that table, you can find more information regarding the differences between the grills in the series. (Take me to that!)

    Weber Q Grill Comparison Chart

What All Weber Q Grills Have in Common:

No matter which of these grills you choose, each Weber Q grill has the following in common:

    • Cast-aluminum bodies
    • Glass-reinforced nylon frames
    • Cast-iron cooking grates coated with a porcelain enamel
    • Gas models have long lasting stainless steel burners
    • Electric models have 6′ grounded cords
    • Easy to clean removable drip pans
    • Each Weber Q grill comes with a great little recipe booklet
    • All gas models use the same regulator, Weber’s Infinite Control burner valve
    • All carry a warranty

    Weber Q 1000 & Weber Q1200

The smallest of the Weber Q models, these grills are hard to beat when it comes to mixing quality with portability. Perfect for small families wanting to barbecue at the beach or the park. Fantastic for tailgating, and great to haul out on your next camping trip. As with all the Q’s, they are extremely easy to clean with their smooth lines and removable drip pan.

Ideal for cooking hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, steaks and veggies. When it comes to other items such as roasts or ribs, you may find that the lid is a little too shallow and the cooking area is just a bit too small.

They both accept both the 14.1oz an 16.4oz disposable propane bottles. An adaptor hose can easily convert to a 20lb propane tank. This is far more cost effective and won’t leave you running out of propane half way through cooking a meal.

The major difference is that the 1200 has a thermometer built into the grill lid. The 1200 also comes with an electronic ignition compared to the 1000’s clicky push button, and keep in mind that the 1000 does not have side tables.

The price of the Weber Q 1000 is less than $200, but I have seen it grossly overpriced in some areas. I think paying $200 for it is probably just about right – any less an you’re getting a deal.

For the Weber Q 1200, you can expect to pay around $250, but I have seen some places that try to sell it for closer to $300.

    Weber Q 2000 & Weber Q 2200

These two grills are larger, but still retain their portability. Bigger means more grilling space, but one of the nicest size upgrades from the 1000 and 1200 is the taller lid. This means that with a little table top grill, you have many more cooking options, such as roasts, ribs, even whole chickens and smaller turkeys. Truly a solid mix between portability and full-size grill cooking.

Beyond size, the rest of the features remain the same as the 1000 and 1200.

As with the last comparison, the 2200 offers a built in thermometer in the hood and electronic ignition, while the 2000 comes with the standard push button ignition and no thermometer.

Prices vary, but expect to find them for between $250

    $300 for the 2200, and $200

    $250 for the 2000.

    Weber Q 1400 & Weber Q 2400

The Weber Q 1400 & Q 2400 main difference between their counterparts is that they are electric. Instead of stainless steel burners, these two grills come equipped with 1560 Watt cooking elements.

Size-wise and feature-wise, the Weber Q 1400 is identical to the Weber Q 1000, and the Q 2400 is the same size as the Q 2000. The major exceptions are that neither model has a button to light it, since they do not use gas fuel.

Prices are a little more expensive than their propane counterparts, with the Q1400 running about $250 to $300, and the Q2400 priced somewhere around $300 to $350.

    Weber Q 3200

The biggest difference between the 3200’s compared to the 1000, 1200, 1400, 2000, 2200 and 2400 is that they are not really portable. These two grills come with a stationary stand that the grill unit bolts on to. Either of these grills would be great for those that don’t quite have the room for a full size grill, but still want the feel of a big gas barbecue. Both of the 3200 models include the folding side tables for storage in tight areas – either would be a great solution for those with small balconies or tiny yards.

Both of these grills also work like big barbecues. The LP model comes with an adaptor hose to connect to a 20lb propane tank . The natural gas model includes a hose and fittings to connect to a barbecue service line, should you have one.

    More Features

The stand has a tank screen to keep the bottle from view. I think that’s quite handy, as it also protects from the elements, meaning your propane tank won’t rust out if you live in more humid areas.

Other features include a thermometer built in to the hood, and two burners instead of one. They also have an easy-start electronic ignition.

These two models are again bigger and better than the 2000 or 2200 with more cooking area (393 square inches) and more heat (21,700 BTU’s). Weber suggests that the size of this grill will allow you to cook up to 18 hamburgers or 36 jumbo hot dogs at a time. That’s enough to throw a nice little backyard dinner party for your neighbors!

Lastly, the 3200 does include a feature that none of the other grills have, and it’s a big one. The 3200 is the only grill out of the Weber Q Series that has a warming rack; a feature rarely seen in my reviews. Those accustomed to a nice full size grill know that a warming rack makes a noticeable difference to the quality of your barbecuing.

What also comes with the size of these grills is the price. These grills, because they are so much bigger and do include the stationary stand, are not even close to the same in price as the other models. Remembering that they are pretty much full size grills, and they do have quality Weber construction backing them up is important when making your grill buying decision.

They both price out at $400 or more.

    Warranty on Weber Q Grills

The manufacturer’s warranty on all of these grills is outstanding. The warranty on the cast aluminum body and Thermoset/Thermoplastic parts is 5 years, but does not include fading or discoloration. Warranties on all other parts are for 2 years, which is more than enough time to work out any defects that might be present.

The warranty on the cart is 2 years.

    What to Do Now?

Now, the decision is up to you. Nobody knows which of these grills will fit you best. In my opinion, they are all great picks.

To help with further research, please see the links I’ve listed in the table for each Weber Q Grill. They link either to Amazon, or to my own detailed reviews and price comparisons.

    Disappointment

This grill had one flaw that prevents me from purchasing. Went to local ace hardware today to purchase, and learned that the tank sits on the ground. So the sale was lost. Since this item would be on a deck in the Northeast, movability is paramount during snow cleanup. I sincerely hope that Weber redesigns the tank area. Total disappointment as this was to be a birthday gift from the family.

This is the first grill I've owned and I am amazed by how easy it is to use. I've already used it four times in the first week (twice in the rain) and have only positive things to say about. Love how evenly it heats the cooking surface and how sensitive the thermometer is to changes in heat.

    Pat the Grill-Maestro

    Best Grill I've Owned

I have owned 3 propane grills previously including a Charbroil and a newer Ducane, not the older more durable ones. I was concerned about two main features when evaluating grills this go around: evenness of heat on grill surface and durability of the cook box.

None of my prior grills compare to the evenness of the heat on this grill. I was worried about evenness of heat since you cannot really test this at the store. In grilling a dozen times or so I do not find any hot/cold spots on the grill grates. This allows me to maximize my space and grill as much food as I could on my old 3 burner grill where I had to place food in strategic places for hot/cold spot. No more reorganizing food every time I flip it to get even levels of doneness.

As for durability, the Weber is the only brand that I could find in the sub $1,000 price range with a cast aluminum cook box. Trust me, invest in this if you want a grill to last more than 7 years. Each of my previous grills have failed due to rusting out the sheet metal cook box. That is why the cast aluminum cook box is vital to the durability. We all know in 5-7 years you are going to replace the burners and flavor bars etc. if you want to keep the grill operating well. But the cook box is not something you can or want to replace due to cost and size. If the cook box fails, you are buying a whole new grill. As a final thought, at least when a burner or grill grate fails with a Weber you can always find a replacement. Not so much with a Charbroil or most other brands.

    I love my little Weber!

I've just down-sized from a house with a built-in grill - which I never used. Too big, too hard to clean, too inconvenient from the kitchen. This little grill sits right outside my kitchen door, starts right up when I want it, heats quickly and does a super job. My son and I put it together in about an hour and were impressed by how well engineered it was - pieces fit exactly as they were supposed to, all the parts were there and clearly labeled, instructions were clearly written. Everything worked (even the often-glitchy starter), and we've been using it almost nightly for two weeks now. It's just perfect, and I'm so glad I bought it!

I no longer need a huge grill - but it is big enough to cook on for my family of 5 and also great to cook for only me. Best grill I've ever owned.

At just one month and a very rainy Spring I haven't had many opportunities to use my new Weber Grill. But so far it's turning out to be the best I've ever owned. Weber grills are not cheap but this product seems to deliver excellent performance and ease of use for the mony. The electronic spark lights instantly and pre-heat is rapid. Temperature recovery when the top is opened or food added is rapid. The built-in thermometer is a plus. Drop-down side tables of both sides will make winter storage easier. The built-in tank scale may be a bit difficult to load but at least provides propane supply information. Overall build quality seems quite good. My grill had been pre-assembled by my Ace Hardware so I am unable to comment easy of assembly. With a little care I think this product will provide years of service and I'm confident repair parts will be available if necessary.

Weber Summit Charcoal Grill: It Grills, It Smokes, And It's Expensive.

    Is It Really The #GrillofaLifetime?

    Something Is Coming

On March 2, 2016, a Weber dealer in Wichita, Kansas was the first to let the world know about a new Weber product with this single sentence:

    Something is coming.

Two days later, on March 4, Weber-Stephen Products LLC made their first official announcement on Facebook and Twitter:

    Coming April 6! #GrillofaLifetime

Weber's Teaser Campaign Freaks-Out The Rabid, Obsessed Fan Boys

Over the course of the next month, Weber teased us with a series of videos and images on Facebook and Twitter. The freelance Creative Director and writer behind the videos, John Angelopulos, posted on his blog:

"Weber was about to launch it's biggest grill innovation in over 20 years. To match the loyalty of Weber's hardcore fan base, we teased up the reveal with a social campaign that tapped into their freakish obsession with grilling."

The Associate Creative Director/Art Director for the videos, Matthew Sharpe, blogged the following:

"Weber has a lot of loyal customers. It's actually fair to call them rabid and obsessed. They are in love with how well these grills can grill. So what happens when they decide to launch a new grill that will change the game all together? We'll see April 6, but first we had to tease and watch the fan boys freak out."

Do some of us have a rabid, freakish obsession with Weber grills? Yes, we do. Do we love Weber grills? Absolutely. So if you were following the campaign online and felt your loyalty to Weber was being played. well, yes, that's exactly what was happening.

Looking High & Low For Details

I looked high and low for leaked photos, specs, schematics, and owners manuals. but I didn't find any. I've got to give credit to Weber, they did a good job of keeping the product details under wraps until the very end. There wasn't the epic fail for this product that occurred in Fall 2013 when a European Weber dealer published a photo of the yet-to-be-announced 14.5" Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. followed by Weber accidentally posting the cooker's parts schematic on their support website!

Still, there were tantalizing clues swirling around the conversation on The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board prior to the April 6 announcement:

    • P eople who initially signed up for Weber's product announcement e-mail list received a confirmation from the "Weber Summit Charcoal mailing list".
    • A few dealers announced they would be revealing "the new Weber Summit Charcoal Grill" at their stores on April 6.
    • People spoke with individuals having knowledge of the product who said it would be a two-layer, air-insulated metal grill with gas assist lighting, a hinged heat deflector for indirect cooking, and a top vent daisy wheel that pops up for increased airflow for high-temp grilling.
    • We heard there would be a $1,500 base model and a $2,000 Performer-like table-mounted version.

April 6, 2016: The Big Reveal

As with any new Weber model, availability of the Summit Charcoal Grill will be limited for some period of time as inventory builds in the retail pipeline. At the time of writing, Weber is making the grill available at a select number of retail outlets; check the Weber Dealer Locator for a dealer near you (select "Summit Charcoal Grill" or "Summit Charcoal Grilling Center" from the dropdown selector).

Why Did Weber Make This Grill? What's The Big Deal?

T his is the big question. why did Weber come out with the Summit Charcoal Grill, and what does it offer that you can't find in existing Weber grills or in competitive offerings?

The "why" is that Weber wants to compete in the profitable, high-end charcoal grill market that is currently owned by the Big Green Eggs and Kamados of the world, in the same way they already compete in the high-end gas grill market.

The "what" lies in the ability of this grill to be equally proficient in both grilling and smoking. The classic Weber kettle is a great "hot & fast" grill, but not a great smoker. Yes, you can use it for smoking, but with some effort. The WSM is a great "low & slow" smoker, but not a great grill. So the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill attempts to do both things very well, to offer the best of both worlds in a single unit, and thus take on the likes of Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe head-on.

Leveraging their history of metal work, Weber is relying on double-walled, air-insulated, porcelain-enameled steel to create efficiencies and performance similar to ceramic cookers, but in a lighter weight package and with the supposed ability to recover more quickly when overheated than ceramics. The design allows higher temps for grilling and more efficient charcoal use for smoking, allowing 10-12 hour cook times with less charcoal than we're used to using in the WSM. The adjustable height charcoal grate moves the coals up closer to the meat for grilling and down lower for barbecuing. An air-insulated diffuser plate can be inserted for indirect cooking or removed for direct grilling. The Rapidfire lid damper offers traditional Weber daisy wheel control, but can pop open during fire-up so the grill reaches 550°F in 20 minutes for grilling. There's ease of charcoal lighting with a gas assist propane lighter. The whole thing rolls around on wheels, there's accessories storage, and on the Grilling Center version, onboard charcoal storage. All this in a package that will not crack, that weighs less and is easier to move and transport than ceramic cookers, and at a comparable price to ceramics.

Add the One-Touch system for easy ash removal and the Weber Gourmet BBQ System for wok cooking, cast iron cooking, Korean barbecue, pizza stone and more, and you begin to understand the value proposition offered by the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill.

    Is It Worth The Money?

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Weber fans have never seen a Weber charcoal grill in the $1,500-$2,000 price range before, and to be honest, it freaks out some people. It's hard to know how much of the price is for product and how much is for prestige. But we are used to Big Green Eggs costing $1,100 before all the necessary add-ons, and we are familiar with the Weber Summit gas grill starting at $1,500 while the proficient Weber Genesis gas grill starts for less than half that amount. So I think we're in an "adjustment period" where people are getting to know this new grill and its capabilities and deciding whether or not they will become comfortable with the pricing. Only time will tell if enough people find value at these prices to make the Summit Charcoal Grill a success.

Having said that, the price of this grill is clearly not for everyone, and I don't expect to see lots of people putting their grill and smoker collection up for sale in order to buy a Summit Charcoal Grill. If you're new to the hobby and looking to save money, for $800 you can buy both the top of the line Weber Performer Deluxe and the excellent 22.5" WSM, assuming you have room for both, and still have $700 leftover to purchase your charcoal stockpile.

Does The Summit Charcoal Grill Replace The WSM?

No, it does not. Weber does not intend for the Summit Charcoal Grill to replace the WSM, and based on price alone, it's unlikely to do so. But the Summit might be a good choice for someone with deep pockets wanting to buy a single cooker that's good at both high-temp grilling and low-temp smoking.

The 24" cooking grate with optional extender grate should come close to the capacity of a 22.5" WSM and exceeds the capacity of a 18.5" WSM. The fuel efficiency of the unit, due to its insulated design, is an advantage over the thin-walled WSM. The Summit's gas ignition system lights charcoal more easily than using a Weber chimney starter in the WSM. And don't forget, unlike the WSM, the whole thing rolls around on wheels.

On the other hand, upon initial inspection, servicing the charcoal and water pan appears somewhat more difficult in the Summit than in the WSM (although adding charcoal might not be necessary in some cases due to better fuel efficiency). The Summit does not have an access door like the WSM, so water must be serviced through the hinged cooking grate (if water is used at all in this grill) and fuel through both the hinged grate and hinged diffuser plate. There's even a new charcoal rake tool for making the task easier, so it must not be that easy to begin with. It's the access door that makes these tasks easy in the WSM. but the door fits poorly on many units, so lack of a door may be counted as an advantage for the Summit.

Unlike the WSM, the Summit cannot easily break down into pieces for transport. The Summit would be more challenging to transport to a barbecue competition than a WSM, especially if moving it by yourself. And there's the issue of price—you can buy five 18.5" WSMs for the price of just one Weber Summit Charcoal Grill.

At some point, I would like to take the Summit Charcoal Grill for a test drive and compare its operation and performance with the WSM. If I ever get a chance to do so, I'll be sure to write about it here.

The Advantages of Ready to Assemble Furniture

Our Ready to Assembly Furniture costs a fraction of what you'd expect because it ships in an economical flat‑pack and you do the finished assembly.

In addition to featuring quality materials such as solid hardwoods, hand-forged metals, and beveled glass, the real beauty of this furniture is that each piece is thoughtfully designed to take advantage of efficient new construction methods and affordable high-performance materials. These include new composition leathers, microfiber fabrics, and most importantly, a new generation of high-resistance engineered woods and veneers that not only save you money but ultimately save natural resources as well.

    Affordable Delivery

Now our Ready to Assemble furniture can be even more affordable. Some ZIP codes are eligible for Local In-Home Delivery starting at just $59. We will bring your order into your home and place the package in the room of your choice. Your exact shipping total will be calculated at Checkout.

    Weber Grill Parts

Let’s get your Weber grill fixed so you can get back to grilling! It doesn’t matter how old your barbecue is; we will help you find the perfect replacement Weber grill parts!

Thanks for dropping by and checking out the shop! This site is designed to be the absolute easiest place to find replacement parts for your Weber grill.

I understand the frustration of not being able to find the parts for your classic grill down at the big box home improvement stores.

This site has done the hard work for you and has organized all of the different Flavorizer bars, grill covers, ignitors and cooking grates for the different grills. I will confess that I am having a very hard time finding the right parts for the Weber Summit six burner grills but that is something I will continue to work on.

When it comes down to selecting the correct replacement parts I understand that attention to detail matters. I understand the difference between a Weber Genesis Gold made in 2000 and one made in 2002. Not only do I understand but I make it easy for you to figure out exactly which grill you have so you can get the right parts today!

If you don’t find the correct parts for your grill then PLEASE send me a note and I will track it down for you! I love digging through old Weber manuals and searching through forum threads to find the right parts. Deciphering parts lists is my backwards version of a jigsaw puzzle.

There are two topics that I will NOT be able to help you with. I do not have access to the side tables for any grills and I cannot help you do a natural gas conversion.

This site is a labor of love put together by me, David Somerville. If you purchase a part for your grill through one of the links on this site then I will make a commission from Amazon at no extra cost to you. If you would like to get in touch I would love to hear from you! There is a Contact Form on the “About” page and you can almost always find me hanging out on Twitter (@bbqdryrubs). Please drop by and say hello. I am always happy to visit with other Weber grill owners!
